In the file, Batman the Dark Knight the Joker says that,“Their morals, their code; it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. You'll see- I'll show you. When the chips are down these, uh, civilized people? They'll eat each other. See I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve”(Heath Ledger, “Batman the Dark Knight”). When one thinks of the joker they think of the Batman villain that is insane. What is failed to be realized is that the joker is a depiction of only a small percent of mass murders in our society. Mass murders have many reasons on why they kill. The media does not do a superb job in explaining and defining mass murders. With the recent spike in mass murders there …show more content…
Narcissism is defined as “a disorder in which a person has an inflated sense of self-importance” (Mayo). James L Knoll calls Narcissism america's classic pathology for murderers (Twenge et al 2008 92). There has been a spike in mass murders in the past decades. This is partially contributed by the internet. The internet is a place where narcissism can spread throughout the world through the papers, events, and ideologies of others. Narcissism is changing the modern mass murder. There has been a spike in the movie of narcissism in mass murders and this can be seen as early as 1990’s. Knoll writes in his paper about how In Omaha, Nebraska a suicide note left by a murderer said “ Just think tho [sic] I’m gonna be …show more content…
Dahmer also known as the milwaukee cannibal is know for the dismemberment and rape of seventeen men. One can argue that dahmer was mentally ill. Who in the right mind would rape and eat another human. Dr. George Palermo, A forensic psychiatrist thought otherwise. He was called by the court judge and testified that Damher was not mentally ill. Palermo explains that “ Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer is not insane, and not a necrophiliac, but a “very sick man” who killed out of lust, the desire for control and the need to rid himself “of the source of his homosexual attraction”(Dr. George Palermo). Palermo later explains that Dahmer knew what he was doing exactly and knew the repercussions of his actions. He was organized in his killings, antisocial, and lustful. At the time of the crimes he had committed he was legally sane. When dahmer was tested to see if he showed signs of any mental illness, the results returned saying that he was smart, emotionally stable, and had logical and rational thoughts. Dahmer was not an insane but one who was ashamed of his sexuality. He was also socially estranged and not accepted. To deal with his exclusion for society he killed to so he could get cleansed of his homosexuality. His actions may have been viewed as insane but Damher was not insane. A lot of what was said about Dahmer and the accusation that he was insane was done over the
Jeffrey Dahmer, one of the most famous serial killers, was a sick and extremely twisted man. Rape, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism were all involved in Dahmer’s murders. Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 21, 1960. Dahmer had a fairly normal childhood. His parents recall that Jeffrey was an “energetic and happy child.” Dahmer’s parents believe something went wrong with their son at around the age of four after he had a surgery to try and correct a double hernia. He started becoming distant at around age 10; soon, his interest involved dead animals and drinking. Eventually, his parents grew tired of his outrageous drinking problem and Jeffrey’s father made him enlist in the army. Soon enough, he was kicked out
Serial killers have fascinated the imaginations of people for a long time. One of the most notorious serial killers is Jeffrey Dahmer whose gruesome murders shocked the nation. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer also known as Milwaukee monster was a notorious American serial killer and sexual offender in the 1980s and early 1990s. Between 1978 and 1991 Dahmer had murdered 17 men. His victims were usually raped, tortured, dismembered, and cannibalism was also involved. Jeffrey was a troubled child psychologically and his social skills had a lot to be desired. All the way through his childhood he was ignored and had queer fantasies of cadavers. In his adulthood this psychosocial status quo didn 't change and was in fact aggravated.
Jeffrey Dahmer, also commonly known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, is one of America’s most notorious serial killers. In the span of nearly 15 years, between the years 1978 and 1991, it is estimated that Dahmer was responsible for the death of fifteen to seventeen young men (Radford University). As his nickname suggests Dahmer was known for drugging his victims, then raping them, then disembodying them, and if the mood fit him, cooking and eating his victims. Dahmer’s unique case resulted in him being psychologically analyzed and diagnosed by at least seven different psychologists during his trial (Palermo & Bogaerts, 2014). This paper seeks to explore the diagnostics given to Jeffery Dahmer and prove, through the use of available information, their accuracy.
Jeffrey Dahmer is a notorious man and it is for all of the right reasons that he has been labeled notorious. From 1987 to 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer murdered, sexually assaulted, and dismembered seventeen young men. He has been defined as many different things: necrophile, sadist maniac, psychotic, and many more. There were many signs that led up to his deviant behavior. A look into his adolescence will show some of those clear signs.
Explained through psychoanalytic theory Jeffrey Dahmer’s personality and criminality can be seen as a result of the events of his early life traumatic events. Unfortunately, for Dahmer and his victims he was not able to be well adjusted, socially productive, and functional member of society. Instead, Jeffrey Dahmer’s un-socialized id, weak ego and poorly developed superego formed the personality and ultimately lead to criminality of infamous serial killer we know
Jeffery Dahmer is arguably the most notorious serial killer -cannibal in history. Targeting men and boys, Dahmer‘s life of crime began with drinking and sex offending. His murders were exceptionally gruesome, often involving rape, torture, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism. The media often commented on how “normal” Dahmer appeared. Jeffrey Dahmer made everyone question how one develops into such a monster. By the time of his apprehension, Dahmer had sodomized, murdered, and cannibalized at least seventeen men, mostly black, Hispanic or Asian, in the Milwaukee area between the years of 1978 until his arrest in 1991 (Williams pg.1).
His background and early life mentioned earlier proves his actions of aggression and impulsivity. His diagnosis is ASPD comorbid with substance abuse, and accompanied with sadistic, necrophilia, and obsessive features. The sadistic and obsessive feature comes from his sexual pleasure to harm and control others. Also his obsessive features can be linked with his canabalism. “Dahmer reported that he felt an intense need of consuming the flesh of the dead body in order to incoporate the other in his own self, and he experienced this as a sexual sense of closeness and unification” (Martens,2011, pg.504). His necrophilia feature has been present sense his early adolescence. His low self-esteem, and unsocial behaviors may have easily led him down the path to developing ASPD and his other features. Jeffery’s mother also “suffered from hysteria, depression, suicidal
In this quote, the Joker is speaking to Batman. In this, he’s talking about Harvey Dent. The movie tells the audience that Harvey Dent is seen as the hero of Gotham city, that is why Joker characterizes him as “Gotham’s white knight.” The Joker convinced Harvey Dent to do evil because Harvey didn’t have anything to live for. He had one motive and that was because of his wife, who is now dead; therefore, it wasn’t difficult for the Joker to convince him to kill everyone that was to blame. Joker doesn’t care for anyone, but to cares only for himself. He also likes to see people suffer. Additionally, he tells Harvey to kill everyone that was held responsible for the death of his wife. As one can see, the Joker doesn’t have a moral code because
Schlesinger’s 'Pathological Narcissism and Serial Homicide: Review and Case Study' focuses mainly on the link between psychological factors and serial killing. Specifically pathological narcissism caused generally caused by some kind of abuse, most commonly from a parental figure, that results in feelings of inadequacy and the need to overcompensate. Although this essay dates back to 1998, Schlesinger’s essay is still relevant today as she uses a case study of a real serial killer who remains anonymous to show how his narcissism reflects in his signature and the posing of the victims as well as his confession. In addition she cites multiple criminal investigators to further show how most cases of serial murders show traits of self-absorption and have a low
Appearing to be the most evil, deranged, and flat out psychotic killer of all villains in “The Dark Knight”, The Joker is the main antagonist of Batman. He is the complete opposite of Batman, in everything from appearance, to ideals. The Joker views murder as sport, and will not hesitate to toy with his food before he eats it, even if said food are the men he has hired to work for him. As intimidating as he is psychotic, in the movie he seems to struggle with an identity crises. Which would put him in Aristotle’s list of character types as a Vicious/Self-indulgent. The reason for that would be that in the movie he states that he is tired of just stealing money from other people he is in shear he of something more which would be toying with Batman as if he were a baby playing with its food. Therefore represents the fact that the joker used to know what was good and was wrong, but choose to do the wrong which made him Incontinent/Soft. Then again I feel like the joker didn't choose to become the way he is now, it was just his childhood that made him like that because in the book he keep on talking about his tormented childhood. He know has no morals for himself to the point where he doesn't care what he does and is now just knowing the bad, doing the bad, and having little or no regret which make him a Vicious person.
The Dark Knight opens with a classic robbery scene that makes the argument, that there is a code among criminals that should be adhered to. Towards the end of the scene we see the bank manager talking to the Joker exclaiming that criminals used to have honor and respect for one another, an honor among thieves. The Joker does not share this same “honor” and will do what he wants, like murder the people who help him rob the bank, to bring chaos and mayhem to Gotham. This argument could be made by both the Joker and the Director of the film in order to show how different the Joker is from any normal criminal. As shown later on in the film when he burns large piles of money, the Joker does not care for money and material things like most mobsters
Jeffrey Dahmer murdered 17 men between the years of 1978 to 1991 in which he participated in necrophilia, dismemberment and cannibalism (Meyer, 2006). As a child, Dahmer was shy and suffered from low self-esteem. At a young age, Dahmer displayed abnormal behavior starting with the collecting of dead animals and using acid to strip off the meat having necrophilia desires. This escalated in his teen years turning into fantasies of killing and mutilating men. After graduating from high school, he was living alone and the feelings of abandonment returned giving him justification in his mind to commit crimes. Throughout his teens years he abused alcohol, which also lead to abnormal behavior. By the
Dahmer’s mother had pregnancy issues and took several different drugs to help; his mother was also extremely depressed--after a while, his mother developed an addiction to the drugs and abused them severely, which is extremely pernicious to the health, both physical and mental, of a growing fetus (Giannetakis). While growing up, Dahmer enjoyed to be by himself. He often took walks into the woods near his house. He would find dead animals and examine their innards; although he liked to dismember dead animals, he didn’t wish to inflict pain onto any living creature (Giannetakis).
The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual describes personality disorders as being a pattern of enduring behavior and internal experiences that tends to digress a significant amount from the individual’s cultural and societal standards (Sadock, Kaplan & Sadock, 2015). This personality disorder is diagnosed in the presence of grandiosity and the need to be admired and appreciated. There is a chronic lack of empathy as well as inflated self-esteem and the belief that one is entitled to the adoration of others. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is classified under Cluster B, showcasing more erratic and emotional behavior which can be seen in the film American Psycho.
At that point, according to the Joker, they drop their phony façade and behave like the chaotic, selfish animals that we all are. I submit that his motivation is to conduct social experiments to prove himself correct- that at the core people are controlled by their own selfish needs (while he is only controlled by his own delusion of pretentiousness). He has two men fight to the death with one sharp stick between them. He gives two boatloads of people the detonator to bombs on the other ship. He tells Batman that if he [Batman] wants to catch him [the Joker], that he’s going to have to break his One Rule that was brought up at the end of the first movie—to not kill.
