In the file, Batman the Dark Knight the Joker says that,“Their morals, their code; it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the world allows them to be. You'll see- I'll show you. When the chips are down these, uh, civilized people? They'll eat each other. See I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve”(Heath Ledger, “Batman the Dark Knight”). When one thinks of the joker they think of the Batman villain that is insane. What is failed to be realized is that the joker is a depiction of only a small percent of mass murders in our society. Narcissism is defined as “a disorder in which a person has an inflated sense of self-importance” (Mayo). James L Knoll calls Narcissism america's classic pathology for murderers (Twenge et al 2008 92). There has been a spike in mass murders in the past decades. This is partially contributed by the internet. The internet is a place where narcissism can spread throughout the world through the papers, events, and ideologies of others. Narcissism is changing the modern mass murder. There has been a spike in the movie of narcissism in mass murders and this can be seen as early as 1990’s. Dahmer also known as the milwaukee cannibal is know for the dismemberment and rape of seventeen men. One can argue that dahmer was mentally ill. Who in the right mind would rape and eat another human. Dr. George Palermo, A forensic psychiatrist thought otherwise. He was called by the court judge and testified that Damher was not mentally ill. Palermo explains that “ Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer is not insane, and not a necrophiliac, but a “very sick man” who killed out of lust, the desire for control and the need to rid himself “of the source of his homosexual attraction”(Dr. George Palermo). Palermo later explains that Dahmer knew what he was doing exactly and knew the repercussions of his actions. He was organized in his killings, antisocial, and lustful. At the time of the crimes he had committed he was legally sane. When dahmer was tested to see if he showed signs of any mental illness, the results returned saying that he was smart, emotionally stable, and had logical and rational thoughts. Dahmer was not an insane but one who was ashamed of his sexuality. He was also socially estranged and not accepted. To deal with his exclusion for society he killed to so he could get cleansed of his homosexuality. His actions may have been viewed as insane but Damher was not insane.
