From Nye’s birthday in March 12, 1952 to the present, Naomi Shihab Nye has survived the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and 9/11 Attacks of the twenty-first century. These modern struggles with the War on Terror impacted Nye all the more due to her close relations with her father, a Palestinian refugee. Because of her cultural background and wide variety in hometowns, Nye is known for her “sensitivity and cultural awareness” towards others (Poetry Foundation). For example, as Nye lives in San Antonio, Texas, many of her poems are spoken with the voices of her Mexican-American neighbors, which demonstrate her understanding and tolerance of people from different backgrounds and cultures. Then, upon the occurrence of the Twin Tower’s explosion in

If there is one day I dread most upon its arrival, it would be 9/11. Sure there was an immense amount of strength as a nation represented, following the terrorists attacks, but it also brought a great amount of grief and sorrow. I remember watching videos of innocent people jumping from windows in the twin towers hoping to escape the terror. These people believed there was no one to help and no one to help them. They lost hope. In “Remembering a Hero, 15 Years After 9/11” written by Peggy Noonan, published in The Wall Street Journal on September 11th 2016, Alison Crowther—Welles Crowther’s mom—recalls the courageous actions to save the lives of others, made by her son on this horrific day. Noonan utilizes pathos, ethos, asyndeton, and
Diana Nyad is well known for swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage; her experience can teach others to see the world and themselves in a whole new perspective. Although she accomplished her goal, it took Nyad a total of five attempts in order to successfully swim from Cuba to Florida. Her fifth and final attempt to make this journey took her approximately fifty-three hours. The distance was over 110 miles, which broke the world record for the distance swam without the protection of a shark cage. Even though Nyad went through hard times during her expedition, she never gave up on herself. Her experience plays a large role in not only how people see the world, but the way they see themselves too.
Danielle Williams was born and raised in the city of Omaha, Nebraska. She is the only daughter of Jill and Phil Williams. Growing up Danielle was always a very shy, quiet, kind hearted, nurturing, creative, and imaginative young girl. Being brought up in a modest christian home, Danielle had a set of very strict set of rules she had to follow. Which made having any sort of social life difficult. She was not allowed to participate in any of the normal activities most kids her age were taking part in. There was no attending parties, no going out at night, no dating boys, no wearing makeup, no revealing clothing, no watching R rated movies, and no cellphones. With nothing to do on saturday nights, Danielle would spend most of her time reading
The effective use of Ethos and Pathos by Naomi Shihab Nye in “To Any Would-Be Terrorists” BOOM, BANG, POP the noises heard from the clashing of the twin towers collapsing floor by floor to the ground. Washington University. Columbia. University of Pennsylvania. Harvard. Brown. Yale. It’s no surprise that these top-ranking, prestigious schools also rank among the nation’s most stressful universities. Stories surrounding these schools spread like wildfire, reporting of students committing suicide, or dropping out of school due to the overwhelming expectations set for them. This is the life of one particular Columbia University student, Nayla Kidd, who decided to escape a life of stress. This past April and May, completely cutting herself off from outside contact, Kidd staged a “disappearance” in order to isolate herself from school and pursue a nontraditional lifestyle. Overnight, she became an example for students everywhere, inspiring them to life the lives they want instead of conforming to what society wants them to be. Though difficult to see amongst

Poetry is the creative means in which emotion is expressed through the literary art of rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Over time, the distinctive style of poetry has been altered to create great diversity branching from the traditional poetic style of writing. Missouri born author, Naomi Shihab Nye, provides a great example of a unique style of writing. Nye is a poet, songwriter and novelist whose style incorporates everyday objects in her writing to create a spontaneous, yet thoughtful connection between these everyday items and the reader. In the most basic form, Nyes’ poem is about fame. She implies that it is essentially “these little things that we overlook – all these everyday, seemingly unimportant things – are really what deserve
Tuesday morning of September 11, 2001 was a day that no one will forget. I decided to write it out what happened to my family that very day in my mom’s perspective to make it easier to understand. My mom was in Pleasant Hill, CA and decided to skip that day of work because my older sister was sick. Madeleine, my eldest sister, was two at the time. Early in the morning a family friend of ours, Janet, called my mom asking if she saw what was happening. Janet said,” Jeanne the twin towers are on the ground, turn on the news!” My mom was so tired from staying up all night because of Madeleine that when she heard what happened she didn’t belive it. She quickly turned on the news and it replayed the airplanes hiting the twin towers and falling.
