Norman Mailer was an American novelist, journalist, essayist, film maker, actor, screenwriter, and political candidate. Throughout his life, he wrote multiple award winning bestseller books. His first novel was The Naked and The Dead, published in 1948, which was based on his military service in World War II. In his critically acclaimed award-winning novel, Mailer uses many literary techniques that contribute to the development of his novel. In The Naked and The Dead, Mailer describes an American World War II campaign to gain control of a fictional island in the Pacific with a realistic view on warfare that exposes all the chaos, misery, and tragedy of war. Mailer does a great job of bringing you right into the middle of this campaign. He …show more content…
This helps add to the credibility of his story. Pathos is also woven throughout the novel as seen through the progression of the characters throughout the novel. I found these characters completely compelling, they felt real, they were angry and tough and I sympathized with them because no one should have to go through the horrors that these men went through. Throughout the novel, Mailer lingers on many themes which reappear in his later essays and novels. An example of this is the theme of brotherhood which helps display some of the few positives of war. Feeling that they may not make it out alive, the soldiers create strong friendships. Croft, one of the main characters, expresses his feelings of brotherhood and tells his fellow soldiers, “You’re all good guys. You’re all chicken, and you’re all yellow, but you’re good guys. They ain’t a goddam thing wrong with you.” (202) Another example of a theme that appears in the novel is loneliness. Since they are away from their family and friends at home, the soldiers are constantly lonely. The men often struggle finding things in common between them. An example of this is at one point, Roth, another main character, wishes to have
One prominent example of this is comparing how both Tim and Mary Anne say the war makes them feel. When he is in the hospital, Tim says he “missed the adventure....of real war out in the boonies” (183). Contrasted with Mary Anne who loves how war makes her feel. She says“you can’t feel like that anywhere else” (106). The way war makes someone feel is the common strand between these two parts of the book. Tim’s experience and the way war made him feel is again repeated through Mary Anne’s character.
Motifs, which are repeated in the novel, are loneliness, friendship, strength and weakness. Men like George who migrate from farm to farm are often alone. As the story develops, Candy, Crooks, and Curley's wife all confess their deep loneliness. Each of these characters searches for a friend, someone to help them measure the world, as Crooks says. For George, the hope of such friendship dies with Lennie.
Another example of this theme being relevant in this book would be Cassie going to get Crisco when the soldiers arrived at their refugee. Cassie’s father told her to go get Crisco so that they could all be saved. When she does this, the soldier shoots Crisco but now Cassie is by the woods and has a greater chance of escaping. Cassie escapes but sees her father get killed. Seeing her father murdered by the soldiers drives her to grow up and realize that Sam could actually be in danger.
A main trend seen throughout the book is that each soldier carried something very important with them, this object, or idea, whatever it be, helped the soldiers cope with the dangers and fears that the war brought upon them.
Living in today’s society it is extremely hard to imagine growing up in a house that is occupied by eight other families. However, this was the case for all children living in seventeenth century Huronia. Due to the fact that the seventeenth century was so far in the past, that it is difficult to fathom what life must have been like growing up in these circumstances, as the inhabitants of this time are not around anymore. With the help of archaeology we are able to distinguish many aspects of seventeenth century Huron life. Using applied archaeology, replicas of the longhouses can be made to represent the true size of these buildings. There are evident soil burns, which show hearths within a long house, implying the amount of families that occupied the building. Although this archaeology paints a general picture of their civilization, to get a truer representation of seventeenth century life, analysis of actual Jesuit missionary accounts should be conducted.
Norman Mailer relies on diction to express himself in the passage. He uses syntax to express it logically. He is very clear and detailed with his sentences; keeping the reader interested. He chose to make the passage very graphic to make us feel like we are at the fight. The passage makes us interpret the fight the way he
The horrors of war were depicted by the constant threats to the characters lives, the brutal conditions of the bad weather, hunger and combat. Soldiers had to battle the enemy along with nature. Soldiers would become stressed, paranoid and start losing their personalities. As Captain Miller says, “I just know that every man I kill, the farther away from home I feel.” This quote shows the mental toll on these soldiers.
It is obvious from the opening chapter that this novel will center on the war and the effects it has on a young group of soldiers, none of them more than twenty years of age. They are all friends and former classmates of Paul Baumer, the narrator and protagonist of the book; they have enlisted in the German infantry because their teacher, Kantorek, had painted for them a glorious picture of fighting and saving the homeland from destruction during World War I. In this first chapter, Baumer and his friends are away from the front lines, relaxing a bit after two weeks of fierce fighting. As each of the young men is introduced, it is apparent that they are tired, hungry, angry, and disillusioned over the war.
I see it as what you see in your life and what you do does affect you no matter what it is and that is exactly the same with this book. These men are subject to constant physical danger, as they could literally be blown to pieces at any moment. This intense physical threat also serves as an unceasing attack on the nerves, forcing soldiers to cope with primal, instinctive fear during every waking moment. Additionally, the soldiers are taken back home, to life they can never live normally or be the same person they once were. The war had mentally abused them to having fear every single moment of their life.
Reading about the everyday life of a soldier gives you a sense of how some days may be extremely exciting or normal. It seems to help you open one’s eyes to the cost of their freedom. I enjoyed this book because the of the many variations of sequences throughout. His writing style kept me interested throughout the book as one felt closer and more involved in the story because of the story telling.
One example of the theme is when there is an incident at the vegetable shop. In this event Tish is harassed by a White Italian. When Fonny sees what happened he defends her and is almost arrested for it. That is when Officer BEll starts targeting Fonny. Which will later prove costly.
These darker aspects of war were expressed through other venues, such as postwar fiction. Norman Mailer and Kurt
The novel follows the themes that war is not the glorious adventure it is often deemed as; rather it is filled with terror that
Loss of innocence is a major theme in the novel due to WWII. These boys had to give up their innocence and childhood to go to a military to school teaching them how to fight and protect themselves in battle. As young boys, they were given guns and other weapons to learn how to use in case they were ever drafted into
When a small business incorporates, it is automatically a C corporation. The primary attribute of a corporation is that it is legally viewed as an individual entity, separate from its owners. The owners are the shareholders whose personal assets are not exposed to liability as they would be if the business was a sole proprietorship. C corporations can experience uncapped growth through the sale of company stocks to an unlimited number of investors because there is no limit to the number of shareholders. C corporations offer limited liability which protects directors, officers, shareholders, and employees from loosing personal assets in the event of a lawsuit.
