At the NIH, I study an RNA binding protein, LARP4, and how it affects mRNA translation and stability. This research has broad implications for understanding cancer, more specifically tumor progression. While my undergraduate research was meaningful, working full-time at the NIH has elevated the amount of time and resources I have to fully commit to furthering research. The NIH provides a platform not only for me to add to the growing knowledge of health, but to collaborate with great minds in order to utilize this information for improving medical care. I feel that this is emblematic of OSU’s vision to improve patient lives through innovative research. I also believe that OSU’s mission for ever-improving patient care is reflected in my volunteering
As my senior year here at Jersey College of Nursing moves quickly to its end, I reflect on how far I have come and what exactly my experience here at Jersey College of Nursing has meant to me.
Pursuant to California Vehicle Code (40902), I plead not guilty by Trial by Written Declaration of the charges of CVC 22349 (b). I have paid the fine of $352 and have attached the receipt to the case as instructed.
This is a reflective essay based on a event which took place in a hospital setting. The aim of this essay is to explore how members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) worked together and communicate with each other to achieve the best patients outcome.
I have been working as a research technician at the Center for Epigenetic Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center since last June and will continue to do so for the upcoming year. My research involves examining the epigenetic changes that occur in cancer progression. Using techniques such as Chromatin Immunoprecipitation and Assays for Transposase Accessible follow by high throughput sequencing (ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq), my focus will be on alterations in histone modifications and changes in chromatin accessibility. Collaborating with other investigators, I will use both mouse model and actual patient samples to study a variety of different cancers. I have been involved in a clinical trial for a small molecule inhibitor of histone methyltransferase DOT1L as a treatment for myeloid leukemia in both adult and pediatric patients. The experimental data I help generate aid physicians in determining if the drug is working as expected at a molecular level and whether it correlates with clinical outcome. I am hoping to be involved in more clinical trials for the treatments of various leukemias. Since March, I have been volunteering at the Hospital for Special Surgery where I am a Surgical Liaison. I explain to patients and their families about the orthopedic surgeries that will be performed and answer any questions. I am gaining more hands-on
As part of my Business Innovation Development Project Unit, I had the opportunity to put myself into group with my friends or people I believed I could work well with. In the first stages of our group we all tried to get to know each other more through analysing personality and learning types’ test that we previously undertook. I realise we were going through the normal stages of the team formation in particular forming and norming (Tuckman, 1965). In my assignment group we had all Belbin team roles which helped us perform well throughout our project and also helped us to identify other team members’ behavioural strengths and weaknesses. During the initial stages of the group getting together I believed it was
Throughout my high school years, I have had the opportunity to demonstrate my leadership skills through different organizations and events. I have participated in events such as History Fair, and have been part of the organization of National Honor Society through three years of high school. I was the leader of my History Fair project group when preparing for competition. The organization of National Honor Society has helped me demonstrate my leadership skills through volunteer work meant to help and improve society helping me gain experience as a leader.
The purpose of this journal is to reflect on my experience and skills gained during my clinical placement at Ben Taub Hospital. On my first clinical day, I was excited and nervous at the same time. My first placement was in the PREOP/PACU area. I was assigned to help a patient who had been in the PACU area going on 2 days. Normally, once the patient comes from surgery they are only in the PACU area for a short period of time before they are discharged home or given a bed in another area of the hospital. This particular patient still had not received an assignment for a bed. The physicians would make their rounds to come check on him daily. The patient was a 28-year-old Hispanic male, non-English speaking, he had a hemicolectomy. He had a NG tube, urinary Foley catheter, and a wound vac. My preceptor had just clocked in and she needed to check on the patient’s vitals and notes from the previous nurse. Once she introduced me to the patient and explained while I was there, she then asked me to check his vitals. (Vital signs indicate the body’s ability to regulate body temperature, maintain blood flow, and oxygenate body tissues. Vital signs are important indicators of a client’s overall health status (Hogan, 2014). I froze for a quick second. I have practiced taking vitals numerous of times and I knew I could do it correctly. I started with the temperature first, when I was quickly corrected on a major mistake I had made by my preceptor. I HAD FORGOT TO WASH MY HANDS and PUT
Over the past three and a half years of undergraduate education, I have received a very comprehensive education that has prepared me to function as a professional nurse after graduation next week. I have appreciated and truly enjoyed taking courses both within and outside of the University of Southern Maine nursing curriculum, and don’t believe I am able to count the ways in which this education has challenged me to become an enhanced learner and well-rounded person. I have identified three courses that have brought me to the role I will now assume as a professional baccalaureate-prepared nurse: one of which is a core course; another, a non-nursing course; the last, a non-clinical nursing course,
Vital signs are a fundamental component of nursing care and indicate the body’s ability to maintain blood flow, regulate temperature and regulate oxygenate the body tissue. Taking vital signs are essential in revealing any sudden changes in the body, which could potentially indicate clinical deterioration of the patient.
The first word that comes to mind when I think of searching for answers to a PICO question related to the physical therapy that I use in my clinic is “frustration”. This week we were to use PubMed to search for research that pertained to two of our PICO questions. We explored PubMed in the foundations class last semester. The only previous use of PubMed may have been through articles found in Google Scholar. Finding keywords was not difficult and my schedule allowed enough time for the search. Filters beyond “full text” “human” and “review” led to zero articles found. One to three filters brought up one to twelve articles and at the most seventy. This may be because from evaluating the PubMed research it appeared more common to pair exercise with fibromyalgia or ankylosing spondylitis than manual or craniosacral therapy.
This essay is a reflective essay on my learning development from a young age through to my current position as a University Student. I will be relating my learning development back to two theories of human development, Vygotstsky’s socio-cultural theory and Marcia’s version of Erikson’s theory of identity development. I will identify and discuss the challenge I have faced with my identity and how this has impacted on my development.
My area of interest is “Hypertension in the African American Male population”. I want to study the incidence in different communities of African American males in the U.S. This will help me to identify risk factors in these communities that could be modified. NIH offers grants to conduct such research. After an in-depth review of the literature, I will seek advice from colleagues and senior researchers. Having a good idea is very important to start with. I will talk to the NIH program official and follow their guidelines in the NIH web page. I will remember the review criteria while writing the grant and follow the instructions carefully.
Clinical practicum has provided a valuable study opportunity to me.When I took care of a living person in wards,I could apply the skills which are learnt from indoor lessons in school and books. Also,I could achieve more knowledge outside textbooks. However,I find that there is a difference between the real situation and theory. In ward, nurses have to be multitasking and need to manage several patients, time is precious to them.Nurses have to make an effort to save time from different ways.To give an example,in the ward I worked in this clinical practicum, nurses connected the syringe to the end of tube and administered drug to a patient with nasogastric tube by giving pressure to pump drug solution down the tube. Thus ,the procedure finished in a few seconds.I learnt this method from them and applied it in my practice. However,I was stopped by the supervisor teacher during one of my practise. She told us that it was wrong to administer drug by using pressure. She then asked me for the right method.I was shocked in that time because I learnt this way from the

Hello, I am Clara Smith and next semester I will be a Sophomore at APU, majoring in acting. I am interested in this course because I think that the human mind is fascinating and I would like to learn about how it is studied. I chose APU because it is a Christian school and it has a wonderful
