Historical purposes play a big role in why the “N” word should not be banned. Everyone has heard stories about slavery and what they were called or described as. This word cannot be hidden since it is already known in history where whites have used it as a negative term and there is no way of hiding it. The “N” word is always going to be refer to those African Americans who suffered. In “Straight Talk about the N-word Price”, Price stated, “A word with a particular racialized American history. But one way of getting at it is to have some critical and historical discussions about it and not pretend that it doesn’t exist. We also cannot pretend that there is not a double standard—that blacks can say it without much social consequence but whites
Twain wrote the story this way because that is the way he knew, there is no way he could have known that in the future the word would be a derogatory term. Most teenagers have a certain level of sophistication that allows them to distinguish the context in which that word is used. The use of the N word should not be looked at as a negative aspect but as a learning experience from who we were to how we are now. Teaching children about the past, good or bad, is an important part of school and something every child should know.
In his writing, Pitts is strongly against the use of the N-word. He wants all use of it to come to an abrupt end. He speaks about how the new generation has tried to renew the meaning of the word, and ignore the connotation behind it. He says rappers think it gives them street credit, and makes them more popular. But regardless he calls for its demise, claiming its history will never be forgotten.
The word “nigger” is designed to first and foremost be derogatory, and it is an expression of hate because of the fact that it was used as a degrading term by white slave owners and traders. Language is, as we know, not a stagnant phenomenon. An increasing awareness around racism and so-called political correctness has a whole lot to say. What makes the word “nigger” particularly sensitive in relation to other words is the fact that it
The n-word is thrown around as part of the standard vocabulary among non-blacks. Some of my friends would accept people using the word or making racist comments, and I found myself alone in a sea of people who ignored black perspective because the anti-blackness did not affect them. One student made a comment about how black people are naturally not as smart as everyone else, and while other students have the luxury of ignoring the
Secondly, the white people did not respect the African-American slavery at all. So they say the “n” word to the them without any respect and they think that the African slavery are stupid, savages, uneducated, have less abilities, and the slavery were born to white people so that the African slavery would work for them and torture them. The white people disrespect Kizzy, Kunta Kinte (Toby), Chicken George, and others black African-American slavery. White people disrespect the slavery because they think that they are gross, and they think that the slavery are lier, and not strong enough to fight with them. But actually
With this book being presented to students all over the schools, it seems to me that throughout the years it has been very debated whether schools should allow the students to read the “N” word. There is a reason why we do not allow the use of the “N” in the United States. It is prohibited to ever discriminate someone using that type of vocabulary. The “N” word is an offensive, disparaging, and hateful word. I think that using that word in a community that has the majority African American students would make them feel uncomfortable and hurt. There are 219 instances of the word being used throughout the book. If students or teachers are not comfortable with reading the “N” word or talking about racial problems, the new edited book would allow
Books, movies, and short stories has been banned due to racism and using the N-word. I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou is excluded; one of the reasons being is because of racism and using the N-word. In the book, Maya was brought to the only dentist in town who is white; the dentist refuses to treat Maya and quoted “I’d rather stick my hand in a dog’s mouth than in a nigger’s mouth” (24.25). This is a form of racism; dentist Lincoln didn’t want to treat Maya because of what color her skin was. In some states or committees, they don’t banned books for using the N-word or being racist to African American people; some books are banned for the weirdest reasons.
Name calling, profanity being yelled. Every day at school, I walk through the halls. Hearing people yell, talk, whisper, even just sit on their phones. Skip class, go to class, ditch the middle of class, every day, kids ditch class. Prejudice being said, racism taking its toll on men and women every day. And to wake up one day, to realize that this fairytale, it’s not a fairytale anymore, it’s called society.
I've never been a fan of TIME's "Which Word Should Be Banned" list, but once in a while (especially during big office weekends) I would give my left arm to have the term overrated disappear. The middle-ground between complete failure and a masterpiece is non-existent in the perpetual cycle of joy and backlash on social media. The conversation around a movie has a huge effect on how audiences feel going into it. Word of mouth can create an environment that invites viewers to take a shot on an unknown property, and it can also create an atmosphere of hostility and backlash.
If it was used in a friendly manner as in to identify a friend the word must not be used. For example, in today’s time many rappers in the music industry embrace the word and use it casually. Hip-Hop culture has influenced the mainstream use of this belittling term. The problem with this is that it can only make racial slurs more socially acceptable. Some people take offense to the use of this word while others don’t care. For instance, in 2001 when Jennifer Lopez released her song “I’m real” featuring Ja Rule she used the word “nigga” in the song. For some people they honestly did not mind, but the majority of people took offense to her use of the word and went crazy about it. She took a lot of flak for the use of the word although she did not intend to offend anyone she still did because the word is a racial slur. The only acceptable time the word should be used is to educate people on the historical context of the word. The history behind the word has a strong shadow over the word which will never fade, which is why people ought to never forget the history behind the term.
Ironically, those same people who use the word in a racist or funny way just shows their ignorance by not knowing the rich history and definition behind it. Rappers: YGs’ song “My Nigga” and Lil’ Wayne’s “500 Degrees” are perfect examples as they slightly change the ending of the “N” word to end in “a” than in “er” and also mention the word by surrounding it with harsh stereotypes and fabricated, lavish lifestyles. Also by symbolizing a new proper meaning for the “N” word, it becomes more natural to mention the word which would reduce blind racism. Education is clearly the best tool for making sure that people have a structured and clear definition of the
The n-word is considered one of the most vicious racial slurs in the English language today. True that the n-word is closely associated with slavery and the oppression of blacks. Even after the abolition of slavery the word still haunted African Americans, especially in more segregated areas; where blacks were viewed as inferior to whites. In recent years the n-word has become less of a malicious slur in parts of our country. Public figures who use the n-word run the risk of losing their jobs. However, since the 1960s African Americans have coined the term “nigga”, when addressing one another. The rise of hip hop culture also enhanced the use of the word-they felt as though they are using the word as a term of endearment. Critics of the
The n-word is a unique word that tells a history of tormented african american and brown skinned people. It is a word that can be used as a way of insulting the african race
First and foremost, the “N” word had affect some people in this world. I believe that the N word should not be use in our society because it is describe as a slang term. The more people use this term, the more they talk inappropriate language. On the other hand, some people believe that the N word could be positive at some form. It could be use to describe as a friendly joke or manner. For example,
Profanity in the Classroom "Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?" (Gordon). Many of the most prominent and brilliant minds throughout history were fluent in the profanity of their time. Hailed as one of the greatest playwrights of all time, Shakespeare’s works are scattered with obscenities and crude phrase. In recent years there has been increasing agitation about the role profanity plays in the classroom.
