Mythology is often overlooked in a school’s education system, and not taught very often or at all, despite having a major significance in the world of education; however, it should be offered in American high schools. Mythology can offer students a deeper knowledge of how things were reasoned back before they had the technology to look up the weather, science to explain earthquakes, and other sorts of advancements that we have today. Back then, it was considered truths and everyone accepted them as what they were explained as. However, as time passed, people misunderstood the myths and they became lost in the modernizing world. The American Heritage Dictionary defines a myth as “a fiction or half-truth, especially one that forms part of an ideology” (Griffin). Though the dictionary has that definition, the meaning of myth and mythology has lost its meaning over time with the progression of modern cultures. Another dictionary describes a myth as “a story presented as historical, dealing with traditions specific to a culture or a group of people” (Griffin). There is a lot that students, and even teachers, could learn from having a mythology class. It has past ties to religion, tradition, and ancestry. If one studies mythology, they can learn about their past as well as the myths that was passed down through their family. It can also show how things were reasoned and thought of back before the technological advancements that is available today.

The culture of mythology is originated as the means of documenting what the culture thinks to be real and have many facts about the beginning of the universe around them. For example, over time and documentation the word of religion took up other meaning for different cultures. When a brand new religion dominates over the previous religion the old book or documents become myths and legends so then beings regarded past recordings as false or fantasy but with no real historical value. That’s when the word myth comes in to play.
Greek myths are stories that explain the meaning of life and teach moral lessons through the values of heroes, gods and mortals. In Ancient Greece, myths were an important part of the culture, first being told orally and in poems, then seen in architecture and theatre.
