Out of the 10 myths about human behavior and environmental problems the one that surprised me the most was Myth 2. In Myth 2 is discusses how “educating people—changing their attitudes and providing them with information—is an effective way to change their behavior in a proenvironmetal direction”. I believe this true, if people are aware of what is happening they will become more sensitive and may even think twice before they throwing trash on the streets. Yet I see how I have some knowledge of how to help and I sometimes do but I mostly don’t. Myth 6: “people almost always misperceive the likelihood of major hazards, including possible future environmental disasters.” I thought that many may not know about the dangers of something against
In the beginning of most stories, they start of with there was nothing but darkness, land and sea. Most of them are about a character of the myth creating a “New World” or creating something for the world in general. Every story is very similar but different at the same time, they are all similar because in every story there is always something being created but different because they all create something different.
“We have been taught to measure, manage, exploit the environment, to make money off of it on the back ' s of others near and far. We 've been encouraged to ignore it, to stay out of its messy dirty places. To ignore it is to ignore ourselves, our bodies, our forces and our relationships"
Out of the myths viewed in sex quiz, two would most likely affect someone of my culture leading to great disbelief. The first statement, for instance, men have stronger sexual desires than women, would have been agreed. However, in Western cultures, men have minimal restriction regarding sexual behavior and its expression, whereas as women are looked down upon and shamed; discouraging the likelihood of expression. Since men have the ability to expresses of sexual behavior and desires more than women, it therefore, leads to the misbelief that men have stronger sexual desires. The second myth, particularly viewed from a religious standpoint, is statement number five, a ruptured hymen is good evidence of non-virginity. In many traditional sex
Every culture, religion, and beliefs have their own ideology on how the earth was created and the story of how the first person was formed. Many beliefs come from science and religion however there is also myths that have been passed down from generation to generation. So, who is right? How did the earth form? I believe that there is no right answer and that every myth gives a person something to believe in. If you take an in depth look at these myths, you will become mesmerized at some of the stories. Today we are going to dive into two myths from two different cultures.
An issue that continues to plague the local neighborhoods is the ignorance of the natural world around us. We take the security of our homes, our yards, and our status in the world for granted. Often, we as humans forget that we are not actually the top of the food chain. We try and assert ourselves in the way of killing the things we fear. Dan Brown said, “We all fear what we do not understand.” While Donny Miller states, “In the age of information, ignorance is a choice.” Why do so many seem to remain ignorant while others grasp the information readily available? It’s literally at our fingertips and yet it’s denied.
The idea to help someone should be taught from the childhood, it should be performed both in schools and houses. As mentioned in the article, overcoming the bystander effect, “Educating people on what exactly needs to be done to live sustainably also makes a difference, as well as helping people form a close relationship with nature.” In the same article, the author has discussed the researchers of the other scientist about it which states, "The Tales We All Must Tell" (pages 212-215), Robert Chinese encourages all of us to own up to our environmental transgressions and atone for them by sharing personal confessions.” (Vernon, Jamie
One’s mind is not a complete mystery, but is a complex topic for understanding. Through psychology we are able to look into a human 's psyche to gain an idea of a person’s thoughts and actions; and from this information other’s are able to create theories and logical conclusions about the mind. It is a brain trying to interpret a brain, and the brain that is doing the interpreting must always find a way to prove the observations made. So when there is an issue that arises, the information that has been gathered can be applied. This is exemplified in the scientific paper “Crafting Normative Messages to Protect the Environment” by Robert B. Cialdini. Where there is an issue of the primary public not seeming to care about the damage being done to the environment, and the public service announcements intended to stop or lessen the damage, has little to no effect.
In reading Garrett Hardin’s “The Tragedy of the Commons,” and through my participation in the Kivulini Simulation lab completed in class, my knowledge and understanding of the psychological factors that contribute to the logic behind the decisions made by humans that negatively impact the planet we inhabit have significantly expanded. Many of these decisions are made out of ignorance, while others are made despite knowledge of the harm that results from them. There are some ways that I can apply this knowledge to my life in order to contribute to the effort to preserve this planet in the hopes of allowing it to sustain future generations.
Dr. Art Markman and Dr. Bob Duke, in the lecture If It’s Unsustainable, Why Does It Feel So Good?, spoke about why we are so willing to ignore environmental issues and the solutions to these problems. The main idea of the lecture was that in order for there to be real change, there must be social pressure put upon each member of society to do the “right” thing in terms of what is in the best interest of the environment. People need to feel good about their choices, they have to find it enjoyable to do things environmentally friendly. An example used in the lecture was when one pulls over to help someone
We are sometimes frightened of some environmental hazards and less afraid of dangers rather than the evidence. Sometimes our fears don’t match the facts. There is always a huge difference between what we view as harmful and what is true. Then we have a gap between fears and facts which doesn’t match with our perception. This is often called “perception gap”. We always worry about the real danger that will affect us personally and never worry about larger issue. The author gives a lot of example how health and safety rely on a structure of perception gap.
During the 6th centuries Japanese sent aid to Paekche that was the one of three kingdoms of Korea in the battle with China. Despite of the aid, Packche could not repel China so did Japanese army. As a result, Japanese took step back from the battle. They returned to Japan with Packche refugees who brought their own culture. At this time period, Japanese felt threatened from foreign powers and afraid of losing their own identity so that they had an urgent matter to build a solid state from separated nations in order to strengthen its national power and its own unique culture. Nihon shoki and and Kojiki were the best constructions that contain myth-historical values. As the literal meaning of the term of Myth is a story of tradition that has
There once was a god named Perculus, he was one of the three lost gods that were destroyed by Zeus. He was the god of education; he was responsible for teaching all the citizens of Greece the basic ways of living. Once Zeus got into power he was jealous that someone other than himself was teaching the citizens so he sent him to Hades, along with two other gods for other personal reasons, Diminutive the original god of Truth and, Gargantuan the god of punishment.
There are many “myths” in my family that come more in the form of funny stories, almost prank like. One that is most memorable to me is a story that my grandfather told all of his grandchildren. He would tell us that if we were ever having issues going to the bathroom that all we needed was someone to push on our head. This story progressed through his many grandchildren (30+ of us) and has even spread to his great grandchildren (40+ of them). My children know the story and often times I will hear my kids yelling from the bathroom, especially my youngest who is 2 and just became potty trained, asking for help from someone, anyone that will come push on his head! This story to me is a good example of a modern day myth, it is just elaborate
We have spent hundreds of years ruining the planet and to be honest most people don’t care. The world that we live in today is more concerned about the best looking car rather than the car that is best for the atmosphere. They don’t take the time to recycle because they don’t care where the materials end up and quite frankly it’s been going on like this for a long time, all the way back to grandparents and great grandparents. If you are raised in a family who doesn’t necessarily care about global warming and what’s happening to the earth then the cycle is going to continue and in the blink of an eye the entire planet will be in shambles. People are losing their farms because of the increase of heat in the northeast. Increased storm surges are affecting the productivity of crops and forests in the southeast region and the list goes on. But even the people who are being affected directly may not be concerned about the bigger issue. One person cannot save an entire planet so even if everyone in our class is blown away by this research and chooses to change their lifestyle in order to help the earth, it still won’t be enough to undo all the damage that has already been
Pollution has become a prevalent issue worldwide and has begun to affect the air used to breathe, the soil used to grow food, and the water used to drink. All of these effects result in commonly occurring destruction of health and wildlife that one may have seen on the news or heard from peers. In order to live, one needs food, water, clothing, and shelter. If the water and food that society consumes gets contaminated, a major component of life has been eradicated, which can only have negative consequences. If more people are educated as to what effects the environment, the world has a chance to counteract the effects of pollution. The main causes of pollution are the burning of fossil fuels such as with car exhausts, littering as a result of societal norms and laziness, and factory waste as a result of lax waste regulation, and can result in mass destruction of the environment and catastrophic effects on the everyday lives of contemporary people.
