My book report was on “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan. The genre of this book is Historical Fiction. The publisher is Scholastic. It has a total of 253 pages plus the author’s notes. Esperanza Rising was published in the year of 2000. Some unusual facts about this book was that it had some Spanish words in it but English after so you know what it means. This book is a Pure Belpre Award winning book. The Pure Belpre Award means excellent portrayal of Latino experience in children's literature. I chose this book to read because the author seemed familiar and the cover of the book really caught my attention including the title.

The other main character would be Miguel. He’s the son of Alfonso and Hortensia, who both work for Esperanza’s family as their servants. They both grew up together on the ranch as kids. The major conflict in this story starts when a group of bandits captures her papa and kill him and his two evil greedy stepbrothers take over the land and tries to make mama marry Tio Luis. When she disagrees, they do everything in their power to make their life difficult. So as the story unfolds, she ends up marrying him. But they come up with a plan to cross the border and go to the United States so they can work and get money, and most importantly get away from the horrible life in Mexico because of the stepbrothers. They all go to California except Abuelita because she wasn’t feeling well to get a better opportunity in advance.
The plot starts out with Esperanza and her papa spending time together. He tells her that the earth is alive and if you listen closely, you can hear its heartbeat. Esperanza was impatient though. But he tells her you have to stay still and be quiet. Papa tells her “wait a little while and the fruit will fall into your hand.” This was the main theme of the story because it means when you wait, something good will come. After that she hears it and gets happy. As you read the book, the saying gets repeated. The rising action of the book would be when papa got murdered by the bandits. The conflict resolution would
The main character of the book, Esperanza Rising, is a young girl named Esperanza. The story begins in Aguascalientes, Mexico on a beautiful ranch owned by Esperanza’s father. However, Esperanza and her family are forced to immigrate to America. Throughout the journey, Esperanza reveals several of her personality traits. All of these traits can be represented by symbols.
Did you know that Esperanza has changed in several different ways throughout the book? If you didn’t know this then you should read this book. Esperanza is very different from the people from the camp they went to. In the beginning Esperanza is selfish when she had gotten on the train. She was also very naive too. But in the middle of the book she changes a lot. She is very nice and giving.
Esperanza is introduced in The Bean Trees, as a Guatemalan refugee who lives at Jesus is Lord Used Tires with her husband, Estevan. Her brother, husband, and close friends are members of an underground teacher’s union in Guatemala City. One night, a police raid that storms through the streets looking for members of the teacher’s union kills her brothers and friends. Esperanza makes the choice to refuse to give the names of the seventeen teacher’s union members because she knew that this information would lead to their death. The police punish her for this choice and kidnap her daughter, Ismene. She ends up departing Guatemala for the United States because her life is danger, leaving Ismene behind. The decision to save the lives of many, and thereby putting her and her daughter’s life at risk is one that causes unfathomable and lingering pain.
In the book Esperanza’s papa is murdered by bandits. This was very hard for her because they were very close. They would pick grapes together and start the harvest. It was right before her birthday that she realizes that her papa was killed. He had given her a doll that was very special
The book Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz Ryan, gives readers a reason to never be afraid of starting over. The main character named Esperanza, is faced with several challenging situations as a young girl. These challenging events are life changing at times, which forces her to make adult decisions at young age. The life Esperanza is forced to live is unfortunately a reality to many Mexican families that made the move to the United States in search of the American Dream. Events faced by Esperanza’s family alongside workers of the El Rancho de las Rosas, which Esperanza’s family owned, forces Esperanza to change into a mature young teenage female. Munoz Ryan shows Esperanza’s character change by challenges she is faced with. The outcome of these events show growth within her young life by the emotions Esperanza expresses. Throughout the book Munoz Ryan uses symbolism to show growth and change within all characters. However; it is obvious to see the symbolic aspects the author provides related to Esperanza’s changes. The author faces Esperanza with different events to help remind her of a once wealthy life along with her current immigrant life style. As a whole many factors influence Esperanza's change. In the onset of Esperanza Rising, Esperanza is a wealthy, spoiled and dependent eight year old child, due to life changing events, she matures into an independent and mature teenage female.
Esperanza Facing Challenges “Don’t be afraid to start over”. Being forced to leave your home, and make a new life for yourself and your family. Esperanza young Hispanic girl who was born a princess, than all of a sudden she’s facing challenges that she never thought she would have to deal with. Since her Papa’s death, Esperanza had to face many challenges as an immigrant. Such as learning how to do chores, dealing with Mama becoming sick with Valley Fever, than Esperanza and other Mexicans having to face discrimination in the U.S.
First of all, why did Esperanza Ortega move to America in the first place?Well, her Papa had died from bandites, so Tio Luis (Papa’s brother,) proposes to mama, and burns the house, so they are forced to move to America to escape him!Since Esperanza was an immigrant,
Esperanza is an only child in her family, and during this time it was not acceptable for woman to own land. When Esperanza’s papa gets killed there were no other men in the family, so the land that Esperanza had grew up on and loved would soon all be taken away, unless her mama sacrificers herself and marries the rude brother of Esperanza’s papa. This idea of men owning land is one main reason why Esperanza’s family must migrate to California. If Esperanza was male, this story would not exist because the land would be given to her. Since Esperanza is a female, the story has a complication in the plot that needs to be overcame. This is the first obstacle that Esperanza must triumph over: leaving home to somewhere unknown.
Sally is gorgeous, She wears lots of make-up and short skirts. Boys gossip about her. Her father won't let her out of the house because of her beauty Esperanza wants to be her best friend. She wishes she didn't have to go home after school. Esperanza is two years younger then Minerva. She has two children and is married. Her husband left her only to return later and then leave again. When the kids are asleep she writes poetry. Esperanza and Minerva share poems they wrote. It bothers Esperanza that after her husband comes back and beats her she still takes him back.
To begin, Esperanza first realizes how trapped she is in Mango Street in one of
In the book “The House on Mango Street” written by Sandra Cisneros. Esperanza shows growth throughout the book. The growth she shows are aging and maturity. Throughout the book and the vignettes, Esperanza looks behind at her past and see what lessons she has learned over time. As she gets older, she gets more mature and expands her thinking.
In The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, a little girl from a Latino heritage is given birth to. Not literally, but in the sense of characterization. Esperanza is a fictional character made up by Cisneros to bring about sensitive, alert, and rich literature. She is the protagonist in the novel and is used to depict a female’s life growing up in the Latino section of Chicago. Cisneros creates the illusion that Esperanza is a real human being to communicate the struggles of growing up as a Latina immigrant in a modern world, by giving her a name, elaborating her thoughts and feelings, and illustrating her growth as a person through major events.
Esperanza is the protagonist of the story. She is very wealthy and gets everything she wants. She struggles through her father’s death and moving to California. Throughout the story she becomes very mature, determined, and a hard worker. She really shocked me because she was a very spoiled princess who became a very strong migrant worker. Ramona Ortega also known as Mama is Esperanza’s mother. They are always together and she helped Esperanza stay strong. Throughout the story she is very strong but becomes very ill and depressed. Miguel was Esperanza’s best friends when they were little kids. He is the child of two servants that work for the family. He wants to become a mechanic and is very determined to reach that goal. They still look after eachother, even though they aren’t very close due to their social status. In the end he is able to bring back Abuelita back from Mexico. Hortensia was a servant that took care of their family. She always looked after Esperanza and was almost like a second mother. She was a Zapotec Indian. She was Alfonso’s wife and the mother of Miguel. Alfonso was a field worker and a very close friend to Papa. He loved the land and took care of the rose garden. He is the main person who helped everyone get to California. Isabel is the daughter of Juan and Josefina. She is only 9 years old but can clean, do laundry, and change diapers. She was the one who taught Esperanza how to do housework. She becomes very close friends with Esperanza. Isabel is the only one who goes to school to learn to read, write, and speak
While Carmen helping poor people Esperanza confused because she didn’t think of poor can help each other. She was confused because the way she raised were different compared to other people. Finally, Esperanza realized that there are more profound aspects in life than being
All the people on Mango Street were struggling to get by, but they seemed satisfied with just making it. Esperanza was not. There were characters like Esperanza’s mother who was a “smart cookie,” and could’ve been anything, but she let shame get the best of her and dropped out of school. There was also Rafaela who got married before the 8th grade just so she could move into her own house, but her husband never let her leave the house afterward. He never let her see her friends, and the highlight of her week was getting coconut or papaya juice from someone who would send it up in a paper bag attached to a clothespin since she couldn’t leave the house. Lastly, there was the time when she was left stranded by the tilt-a- whirl waiting for a friend that never came back and got molested by a group of boys. The only witnesses were the red clown statues that seemed to be laughing at her. Nevertheless, she let none of this stopped her from going forward and perusing her dream. She still seemed to be struggling with a sense of belonging, but maybe that’s because she didn’t.
