Ever since I was a kid I remember going to my grandparents’ house. I went there ever other summer vacation. The climate was a big reason of why I enjoyed visiting Guatemala. The tropical weather made it sunny most of time. I liked the pleasant feeling of the sunrays hitting my skin. But at the same time the weather was very indecisive, in a blink of an eye the clods came rolling in and the downpour of rain began. The rain came down fast and hard, the sound of it hitting was like that of soldiers marching in unison. The intensity of the rain made it feel like if you were standing under a waterfall. Whenever I went to Guatemala I stayed with my grandparents in their house. I remember it as if I was just there. From the faded green paint on

The country was foreign, a first for me. Dilapidation and ruin scattered the horizon as far as one could see. Guatemala is a place where poverty has a strong grasp on its people. We traveled tirelessly for hours to reach the poorest of the poor. Upon arrival old, young, and natives of all shapes and sizes formed receiving lines, eager to welcome us with gifts of smiles and gratitude. It was an experience that forever changed me. This was the first time I had stepped outside the boundaries of the American culture into a world where nothing is taken for granted. Each day spent on my mission trip brought a fresh awareness of gratefulness. Any pre-trip reluctance quickly became a vague memory as my emotions welled within bring a fresh change to

Guatemala’s culture is a unique product of Native American ways and a strong Spanish colonial heritage. About half of Guatemala’s population is mestizo (known in Guatemala as ladino), people of mixed European and indigenous ancestry. Ladino culture is dominant in urban areas, and is heavily influenced by European and North American trends. Unlike many Latin American countries, Guatemala still has a large indigenous population, the Maya, which has retained a distinct identity. Deeply rooted in the rural highlands of Guatemala, many indigenous people speak a Mayan language, follow traditional religious and village customs, and continue a rich tradition in textiles and other crafts. The two cultures
We have been lost to the world. As I stated in my previous entry, Corban, Drew, Abi, Hannah, Samii, and I were on our way to Guatemala for spring break. Today everything was going so well then the Seneca started to dive. The engine had failed and the sickening knowing that we were going to crash hit hard. We broke through the low cloud cover and instead of seeing water we hurtled toward an island. The last thing I remember happening before we hit was the trees breaking the wings off and something hitting my head. When I came to, everyone seemed ok. Abi had staggered toward a stream washing blood off of her arms and face. Hannah and Samii were by the tail section holding each other, stunned. Neither one of them look
Honduras is a country formed by different types of cultures, both indigenous and city cultures. Even though this is the case, this small Central American country is affected by the same social problems as a whole. In order to understand Honduras’ present, it is important to know some history of the country that have influenced how Honduran society is today. Honduras was part of Spain’s empire during colonialism, causing the country to lose most of its riches in gold and the indigenous population. In 1821, Honduras gained its independence from Spain and entered a period of political uncertainty. The 1900’s were the age of

Between its past and present, it is a unique country. Guatemala is known by the locals as "the country of eternal spring" that is because of the mild weather combined with rains throughout the year and the rich soil of the country making a wonderful combination for the

Guatemala is a country that represents colorful festivals and an energetic populace. With everything going on, it is no surprise that Guatemala is known all over the world as a travel destination. One city that the country is rooting for is a place called Coban; an area wherein being simple is better than showing-off, from the minimalistic approach of building their homes, to the silence that everyone finds peace in, the sheer joy of having eaten a scrumptious dinner instead of a feast to the serenity gained from the surrounding nature. Coban is the place you want to be when you want to shrug off the pressing issues of your life and just be cleansed by the experience.
Central America Central America, just south of Mexico and North of Panama, consists of just six countries; Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. Of those six, all share a distinct common history except for Belize. Belize for one is incredibly small, and while Spanish is the official language of other Central American countries, in Belize English is spoken. So throughout this paper as I carelessly say 'Central American' I am not including Belize whose history and development was far different than the others. Although Central America is located close to the United States in relation to the Eastern Hemisphere, our ways of life are indescribably different.
We walk out of the airport and stop, frozen in sheer amazement at the picturesque view of Bermuda. This sheer amazement occurs when one is so astonished at what his eyes lay upon that his body forgets all functions, as if each muscle and organ is in envy of what the eyes are rewarded with. (Definition) As if on cue, the aroma of peppers comes upon us as we look upon the clear, turquoise water waving back and forth in front of us between the immaculate palm trees swaying in the light breeze. We follow our taxi driver to his car and enter, only to hear music that would never be played in America. It sounds like an upbeat Caribbean or Jamaican tune, which clearly represents the mood of everyone who lives in Bermuda, and soon us as well. This drive to the resort is one of the most exquisite 15 minute journeys I will ever undergo, and I already know that this trip will be an unforgettable experience.
Costa Rica is a very beautiful and unique place. It was my first time going there and I loved it! It was much different than the United States in ways I didn’t mind or even enjoyed. We saw many things and went many places while we were down there. I am ready to go back again already and do new, exciting things. However, we did a lot while we were down there.
