When you are going through a tough time and having many problems, remember this story. It is refreshing to sometimes remember that whatever our problem is, there are people in the world that wish that they have our problems. I aspire to be just like my sister, Erika, for her optimism, everlasting joy, and determination. No matter what life through at her she always remained happy. Erika is my symbol of everything I want to be. Erika was born in Rome, Italy just like me in 1986. She lived in Italy for the majority of her life and enjoyed many things. Such as Italian cuisine, dancing, blogging, exploring, and spending time with her friends. She loved horses and her favorite color is purple. Erika was born with spina bifida. Spina bifida is a condition of the spine where it doesn’t develop fully or properly in the womb. Erika was wheel chair bound by the time she was two or three. This didn’t hold her back. Erika went through over twenty-five surgeries in her lifetime. She was often in pain and needed a caretaker, family, or friend to help with every day care and needs. I moved from Rome when I was about four years old to the United States. Throughout my life in America I took about five pleasure trips to Italy to visit family including Erika. She moved from Italy when I was about fourteen years old to live to be more involved in my life and to be with our mother. My sister was determined to conquer this life given to her. Erika did many of things to be as independent as
She moved to America around the age of four, and was very content with her life. Unfortunately at a young age she was diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer called “Ewings Sarcoma”. She was not given very much hope to survive the cancer but
Margaret has spina bifida, a condition in which one or more of her vertebrae did not form properly, leaving her spinal cord—the most vital component of the central nervous system—unprotected. She has had eight operations and wears braces on her legs to keep them in the proper positions. Throughout all of these ordeals, she has retained her outgoing personality and positive view of
I see language as a huge blessing. When utilized properly, it can encourage, teach, and help others. It can also be used to express ourselves to our core. To be able to reflect what is within our hearts, though, we must dive deep into emotions and language. Paired, they allow us to understand one another so that we can communicate and help each other through life, something that is definitely not meant to be done alone—which exactly explains why God gave us all community. With life being like an ocean, I truly believe that we cannot survive without God, first of all, and also without people. Because they are so important to me, I place emphasis on understanding how to properly use the English language so that I may glorify God, showing my thanks to Him with my every sentence whether it is verbal or written or thought. This portfolio, thus, is a reflection of my identity and journey with God—all constructed with language and emotions to portray my love for communicating with Him and His people. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable inyour sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14After being rescued by Him, I gained sight. I no longer saw the things around me and within me with a blurry lens; I took on the clearest lens, as though my eyes became cameras, to see things with truth. With this new vision and mindset, I began to see my own mistakes as well as those around me. Because of this, I understood what needed revision and what
There are lots of things in life that happen to different people, for different reasons. And some people, you would never think they endured some of the things that they had to endure. Some people’s lives are better than others, the experiences, the drives that they push through each day, every day. But this story, is eye opening, and a learning experience in multiple ways.
Upon her volunteering for a tree-sit (something she knew nothing about) in her effort to become part of the solution, her journey began. Her calling in life had found her, and she was determined not to shirk her responsibilities, but rather live up to the task she believed to have been presented with. So strongly she felt about this task, that she was very determined to overcome any obstacles that could be put in her way.
I am the sister my siblings turn to, the daughter my parents look up to, and the friend you can always count on. There were endless struggles growing up, so I taught myself to be that same sister who learned from my siblings’ mistakes, the daughter who had to look up at myself, and the friend who needed to count on me first. There were only two choices. I could accept the limitations of life like my mother and be bitter or see the opportunity to rise above it. I choose opportunity and accepted the responsibility that came along with changing those limitations.
They stop and stare, take one look into her eyes and realize they hold their own story. She's the type of girl people would look at and think, "Wow, she's beautiful. I wish I was her." But, little did they know that this beauty was on the outside, but pain was killing her on the inside. She faked a smile, day by day, but she often wondered if people ever noticed her silent cries for help. Along the way, she realized she forgot how it felt to be happy.
She tells how she was born after her parents suffered many miscarriages and stillbirths resulting in them being very proud of her but also very demanding.
We all have someone or maybe something that has been a big influence on us somehow in some way. For me this person is my best friend, partner in crime, and most of all she is my girlfriend. I was drawn to her because her potential and I could tell that she’d been through a lot. She had the look of someone vulnerable, and vulnerable she was. Erika looked as if she needed to tell someone the things that she went through and the things she overcame, that someone was going to be me.
“Sarah is at Children's Hospital, in the ICU”. Those are the words that changed my life. Sarah is extremely sick and it's making me want to be smart, strong, and kind. My sister, Sarah had lung failure when she was in 7th grade, she was hospitalized and stayed at Children’s Hospital in the ICU for around a week. Nearly a year later they found out what was wrong with her, she has Chronic Eosinophilic Pneumonia and Severe Asthma. When I saw her get sick I saw her being strong, nice, and keeping up on school work she made me want to have these qualities as well.
Without the help of others, she was able to discover her true
Her strength retaliating against people who look down on her exemplify how a person can overcome the obstacles that they face throughout their physical and inner journey.
My personal coat of arms follows the usual kite shield design. Because of how the shield is width increases with the height I arranged my symbols to reflect that with what I believe is of greater importance sitting more prominently higher on the shield. Starting from the bottom, I used the maple leaf design on the Canadian coat of arms as a base. It’s at the base because I would not describe myself as a Canadian when asked who I was but firmly believe that being a Canadian is at the root of what I value. Going above that Is the Filipino flag, which represents my loyalty to my heritage as a Filipino. At the top part of my coat of arms has an image of oil wells and an Albertan wild rose. Oil wells in this image are linked to my perception of
After reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I realized that my life isn’t as bad as I had originally thought. I have always known that there are people that have it way worse than me, but I know that I have not had an easy life, like I would prefer. Every family has their own problems otherwise they wouldn’t be a family. In The Glass Castle, Jeanette’s mother told her, “Life is a drama full of tragedy and comedy. You should learn to enjoy the comic episodes a little more.” That is what I am trying to do. In some degree my life and Jeannette’s life are related; we both had ups and downs, but mostly downs, throughout our lives.
