My Philosophy Of Nursing

Introduction
In the nursing field there are different philosophies in how a nurse cares for their patients. Throughout the years since nursing inception there have been many different philosophies that has contributed to the nursing practice today. For instance, Florence Nightingale was one of the first persons to address the philosophy, “What is Nursing?” She explained the difference from nursing and medicine (Black, 2007, p.331).
As a nurse, the developing of your own philosophy can model those previous in the field. These philosophies have beneficial to those of the past and continues to be a part of the foundation for the nursing’s future. However, we may want to consider more wholistic view when executing nursing care. The environment, economics, social, food, and rest all contribute to the healing process and nursing play a distinct role. This is some of my key beliefs that I adopted from Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit theory of Nursing. My goal is to provide a patient with high quality care in a comfortable environment, along with providing the patient with proper education and guiding them in a direction that provide them with the resources they may need.
Furthermore, caring for a patient there must be an understanding that there are many components of care. Hence, think about the patient’s overall environment and how it can help in the healing process. Providing a welcoming environment can lower a patients stress levels can increase their outcome. The interaction with the ones we love can bring hope and rejuvenation. This is based on personal experiences on how family can provide the comfort a person needs. Thanks to the influence of the Maslow hierarchy of needs. My beliefs is that if a person follows this hierarchy and apply it to their medical care a patient outcome as a possibility of improvement. This theory has been the pillar of influence in my nursing practice.
