Betsy Sparrow, a psychologist at Columbia University, defines transactive memory as a shared system of knowledge where we have external memory systems available to us, typically in other people or the internet. We have learned to rely on these external systems to provide information rather than remember it ourselves. Even though I’ve never heard the term ‘transactive memory’ before watching this video, it makes sense. We can’t possibly remember everything, especially if we don’t use it every day, but if I remember where to find it, I can still utilize the information when I need it. This isn’t a new concept; employees who work in team environments often rely on coworkers to provide a unique set of knowledge and expertise that other team members don’t have. It allows team members to focus on their area of responsibility and can create a cohesive team environment. I do this in my personal life with my family and friends. If I can ask someone else or look it up on the internet, like driving directions or a recipe, I don’t have to store it in my internal memory. I just need to remember where to locate the information. Dr. Sparrow says that we typically rely on external memory systems for information that we don’t use in our everyday lives. The amount of information at our fingertips has grown exponentially because of the internet and search engines like Google; we have learned to adapt by prioritizing what we must store in our internal memory and what we can store in external
Mayella is powerful because of her class, race, and gender. Mayella is a white female who lives with her father, Bob Ewell. This story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama, in the 1930’s. Mayella is trying to get out of the situation with her sexually abusive father and sets up a plan and accuses a negro man named Tom Robinson of raping her and her dad catches them.
In the article “How Google is Changing Your Brain,” Daniel M. Wegner and Adrian F Ward discuss the “transactive memory system” and how it is evolving with recent innovations in technology. The “transactive memory system” is classified as distributing the responsibility of remembering information among people in one’s social group. This in turn broadens an individual’s memory, as information not stored in their own minds may be stored in the minds of their entrusted companions. This method frees up cognitive resources and potentially could increase one’s depth of knowledge. That said, Wegner and Ward highlight that the Internet now has become the modern cognitive partner for many. The reason is that the Internet is unlike any human due to its
Background: The primary experiments that this proposal hopes to build upon were carried out in 2011 and the results published in a journal entry titled “Google effects on memory: Cognitive consequences of having information at our fingertips”. Through Stroop tests and tests for information recall, the researchers concluded that participants did demonstrate a reliance on transactive memory (Sparrow, Liu & Wegner, 2011). However, they did not adequately show that the rise in internet and search engine use is necessarily responsible.
When I began to contemplate the possibility to go back to school, I knew I had to make some major changes in my personal life in order to make school a priority. I don’t tend to go out to social events often, because I prefer to relax in my place, spend time with my family and go shopping. However, one day I was invited to an event and from that event, a lot of other events followed. I became part of a social group that constantly were doing different activities all the time. Facebook and Instagram crawled in, and I was spending too much of my time, trying to keep up with everything that was going on. I knew that if I wanted to make school a priority, I had to separate myself from all the unnecessary social events, the people I was surrounding myself with, and social media. Why? Because I tend to get distracted easily and at this moment of my life, school is my number one priority. Professionally, I had to make a couple of changes in my job regarding volunteer work that I was doing, which was taking my time and energy. I spoke to my boss, and informed her that I was not able to continue doing the extra volunteer activities, that I was doing. By doing this, I made my academic school work a priority. Academically, I know I will be faced with a lot of barriers, for example, disappointments, discouragement, anxiety, and fear of not being able to keep up with all the school responsibilities a college student faces. One of the things that I will be doing to work
My mom told me that life is definitely going to be like a roller coaster, with many ups and many downs, but how I deal with this ride, is what will make me who I am. So, I am an 18 year old girl who was born and raised in Coudersport, a very small town in Northern Pennsylvania. My parents got divorced when I was around three years old and I have lived with my mom ever since. I am the oldest of three sisters and have many cousins that are as close to me as siblings. Who I am today has mainly been influenced by three things; where I am from, my parent’s divorce, and my family.
I don’t care what people think of me. Since I been in machine trades I have been coming to school in dirty clothes and not really caring. They can judge me, I am not worried about my social life. If you don’t like me for who I am, sorry I disappointed you.
amounts of separation from my mother, even thou now I can look back and see if was just more then I was use to. Once into high school the separation grew larger, as I got older, her time for her boyfriends grew larger and I was left alone. I experienced a large disconnect with my mother, in which I spent more time living with my friends parents then I did my own. Also going back to throughout my junior high years a medical condition for numerous years that had gone undiagnosed and it created large amounts of avoidance towards my mother. I was very sick and my mother was told false information regarding my undetected and undiagnosed illness that made her what would her reactions and behaviors towards me improper. During my Illness I had
The most important thing for me in my life is my family. Although we are separated during the week, we would hardly see each other. Deep down, they are the reason why I look forward to Fridays and Sundays. These days are not Just any ordinary day for my family because we get to come to gather and have fun we bond as any other normal family dose. Another reason why my family is important to me is because my mother is my motivation to finish the week she is the first person I see in the morning and the last person I see at night.

At first introduction I am seen as perpetually cheerful and high energy. Coworkers, friends and acquaintances recognize quickly that I am fiercely competitive, passionate about my work, and easily classified as Type A personality. It is clear from my Instagram account I am obsessed with the outdoors; from skiing and hiking to mountain biking and camping, I search for adventure as often as possible. My Facebook is littered with photos of my four-year-old’s choice in outfits and silly quotes showing her viewpoint on the world. (“I’m a strong, interpendent woman!” is a recent favorite.) What many people don’t know, however, is the laundry list of traumas and tragedies I have endured. I often get the shocked deer-in-the-headlights look when someone finds out both my parents died within two years of each other. When it comes out that I married young to escape my emotionally abusive mother, just to realize my husband was also abusive, the comment is usually on how courageous it must have been to file for divorce and leave with my young toddler in tow. It is not uncommon to hear the exclamation, “But how are you so happy still?” after hearing of my multiple miscarriages.
I was always such a happy kid growing up. Not only was I extremely happy, I had no care in the world other than my mother making me take a bath. If she did not make me take a bath that day then I would be ecstatic. Who knew that in only a few years, my life would be turned upside down. It all started pretty much the very first day of 6th grade when all my happiness and care free attitude went away. This I would not be who I am today without this experience.
I never knew the idea of a broke college student was real until I became one. After the money relatives gave me after high school graduation ran out, there was not much left in my pocketbook right as school was starting. What became the most difficult part is that I wanted to spend money on so many objects and activities, but could not bring myself to spend money unless it was a dire need. I would never go to my family if I did need the money either. With three other siblings in my single-mother household, I could not bring myself to ask my mother for money I knew she could not give. We are all struggling. This led me to go to the drawing board to become a frugal shopper and to save money in college.
When I was in high school, I wanted to travel to Untied State to study in university there when I finish the high school, and it was my only wish in my life. All I wanted is go to there and study, but not all wishes in life anyone could be come true, it should be many things stop in our ways, and something makes us stop thinking about it and give up. This is our problem we have, but we know that some of us have a determination and resolve, and we could realize all our wishes without hesitation. And I was ones of them, I wanted to building my future by my self.
