The topic pertinent to psychology that i chose to do my paper on is educational psychology. Educational psychology is the study of how humans learn and retain knowledge, primarily in educational settings like classrooms. This branch not only involves just the learning process of early childhood and adolescence but it also involves the social, emotional, and cognitive learning processes that are involved in humans throughout their entire lifespan. Educational psychology combines numerous amounts of other branches of psychology, including: developmental psychology, behavioral psychology, and cognitive psychology. Educational psychology is an approximately new subfield that has had a huge amount of growth in recent years. The four major perspectives in educational psychology are: Behavioral perspective, developmental perspective, cognitive perspective, and the constructivist approach. The behavioral perspective proposes that all behaviors are learned through conditioning. An example of this would be a teacher handing out tickets for participating in class or good behavior that can later be exchanged for candy or toys. The developmental perspective suggest how children obtain new skills and knowledge as they develop. An example of this is Jean Piaget 's distinguished stages of cognitive development. Piaget’s theory was introduced by Jean Piaget who established four periods of cognitive development. The four stages are; Sensorimotor, Preoperational, Concrete Operational, and Formal operational. The sensorimotor is the first stage and begins when the child is born and proceeds until the age of two years. The second stage is the preoperational stage and begins with the child is two years old and continues until the child reaches six years of age. Beep! Beep! Beep! Right now I’m thinking to myself that why do I have to get up so stinking early for school. I just want to keep sleeping but I can’t because of two reasons. The first reason is obvious because I have to get up for school, and the second reason is that I had to go number one undoubtedly bad. The stretch receptors in my bladder were screaming at me to go. They were screaming at me because my bladder was full of 800 milliliters of urine. My bladder was so full because my kidneys were trying to keep my blood pH levels normal so they were flushing out excess H+ ions. The only way I knew this is because the stretch receptors sent this message through the nervous system (aka the brain (the control center)) The nervous system sends and receives electric messages through the spinal cord and especially the brain. The nervous system receives and sends messages through the receptors in the sense organs. The nervous system is a part of everything in your body because it helps with homeostasis in every organ system including itself. Once I received this message I got up quickly and ran to the bathroom and relived myself. [1]
Piaget’s theory is contrary to the behaviourist model as he believed that through observation, children ‘construct’ their own understanding of the world, based on their own experiences and prior knowledge. Piaget believed that this type of learning was more influential than instruction from a teacher or caregiver.

Piaget and Vygotsky both believed that young children actively learn from their hands-on, day-to-day experiences. Jean Piaget portrayed children as "little scientists" who go about actively constructing their understanding of the world. His theories hold the essence of developmentally appropriate curriculum since Piaget believed that children undergo cognitive development in a stage-based manner, such that a very young child would not think about things the same way that an adult might. He referred to the knowledge and the manner in which the knowledge is gained as a schema. In order to build on the cognitive stages that children experience, informal learning opportunities, formal instructional sessions, and the utilized curriculum must all dovetail with a child's current cognitive stage so that assimilation of the new knowledge may occur. Working with what the child knows and experiences, parents and teachers create bridges to the next cognitive stage that are characterized by the child's accommodation. Piaget argued that optimal learning took place in this manner and that adults should avoid thinking that they can accelerate a child's development through the age-based, maturity-referenced stages. This is because a child works toward establishing an equilibrium between the assimilation and application of new knowledge and changing their behavior to accommodate their newly adopted schemas.
There are multiple theories explaining how cognitive development occurs. Piaget’s stage theory, for example, focuses on whether children progress qualitatively through stages of development (Diener 2017). A theory based in nature vs. nurture, Piaget believed a child’s cognition develops biologically as they grow, based on their interactions with the environment. Sociocultural theory, on the other hand, believes children are influenced by the beliefs, values, perceptions, and opinions of those around them. Finally, information processing theories suggest that children process the information they receive and do not merely react to stimulus.
In Psychology 101, you learn about a personal fable; something that I have not lost. I have always wanted to change the world that I was destined for greatness and teaching elementary school students gives me that power. Over the course of this semester, I have had the opportunity to learn about educational psychology. I have always enjoyed psychology and was especially interested in how it applied to teaching in the classroom. There were five specific concepts we discussed over the semester that especially interested me. I found that homogenous and heterogeneous grouping, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, operant conditioning, cooperative learning, and divergent versus convergent thinking are five psychological concepts that every teacher should learn about in preparation for teaching.

Discontinuous theories are stage-like. The processes of learning and development involve distinct stages, which are characterized by qualitative differences in behavior.
