My maternal grandmother Juana Martinez was born in 1933 to Domitila Naranjo and Mariano Martinez. She was born in a small town named Piscila, in the state of Colima in Mexico. Her mother was a homemaker, while her father provided for them by selling crops he grew on his land. Although my great grandfather was successful at what he did, his income was spread thin between his ten children and wife. At age 14 one of my grandmother’s male cousins visited her to deliver a message. He had informed her that one of his friends named Felipe Lopez thought my grandmother was beautiful. Felipe wanted to know if my grandmother would marry him, and if so he would go and ask for her hand in marriage. My grandmother had never met her admirer Felipe Lopez, but had seen him around their hometown. Born in 1933 my grandfather Felipe was twenty two years old, and felt he was ready for marriage. Being only fourteen years old my grandmother knew she was young to commit to marriage, but felt that if she were to marry and move out this would help out her family financially, as it would be one less mouth to feed and cloth. Without a single date and only the little interaction they had when my grandfather asked for her hand in marriage my grandmother and grandfather wed in 1947. They made their home in the same town of Piscila and had their first child Martha in 1948. In 1951 their second child Hector was born followed by Clementina in 1953, Irma in 1954, Maria in 1956, my mother
I’m an American grown up with Mexican roots; with all their traditions, religious beliefs, holidays, and foods. I come from a small town of south Texas, called The Rio Grande Valley, where I live with my average size family. I’ve grown up with my family facing hardships, and flaws yet united always. As time has gone by I’ve come to learn that everything around me has shaped me to be the young lady I am today, and I’m grateful for that.
In 1975, due to the war that was happening in Angola, they had to come back to Cabo Verde so they could save their lives and the three kids that they already had. After they went to Cabo Verde my grandmother had 2 more kids, in which one of them is my mother.

Imagine how California would be if there is no immigration? Immigration is what has made California what is today. Without it, California would not be California. I am immigrant because I wanted better opportunities to provide for myself and my family. However, what about Connie Young Yu’s grandmother or Mexican immigrants? What brought the immigrants here? Each immigration has a different purpose in order to come California, but as Richard Rodriguez and Conni Young Yu describes in their section, getting to the place that is a land of immigrants is not always easy. Connie Young Yu, the author of the story of our grandmothers, is a historian, archaeologist, and author on the Chinese experience in America. Rodriguez is a Mexican American writer and has written many articles about immigration. He describes the immigration of Mexicans in his selection called proof. They focus on people whom the California dream has attracted through the years, including immigrants from Latin America, Asia, and the Near East. Therefore, as we read their stories, we are exploring the different lives of Californian’s immigrants, and the readers also
The Virgin of Guadalupe is a syncretic figure between the Spanish and Indian cultures because, for one, the Virgin of Guadalupe is the symbolic mother, which rest between humans and God, in both the Spanish and Indian cultures. When the Spanish came to America in efforts to try and conquer the Native Americans, but failed to do so in the end, they began converted many of the Indians into their religion, Catholicism. Since mostly all Native Americans were converted into Catholicism by the time the Spanish had left, due to the Pueblo Revolt, the Virgin of Guadalupe had become the Indians Native American Mother. With many of the Virgin of Guadalupe’s features, for instance, her brown skin representing characteristics of the natives. Just as the

In other words, the representation of a fluid gender conscious demonstrates the chicanoismo ideology of a new ethnically blended identity to a gender blended identity which contests the attachment of roles on both a gender conscious, an ethnic conscious and the majority world culture.
Not far from the city of Lucca, is the small village of Colognora where my grandfather Antonio was born in 1859 in a small stone built house. For many years Antonio and the family lived under poverty-stricken conditions, and in 1886 at the age of 27, Antonio married Leticia Lencioni. After their marriage, Antonio and Leticia live in the house Antonio grew up in. Despite its destitute condition, in the span of 14 years Leticia gave birth to seven children: Alaide in 1887, Eugenio in 1889, Genovina in 1890, Solimano (my father) in 1895, Pietro in 1896, Augostino in 1898, and Zaida in 1900. Antonio and the entire family continued to live on this small piece of land with nothing on it but a crumbling two-story house with

In the time frame that this story is set, many major life decisions things are made taking into account one’s duty to family - including the selection of a husband or wife. It is possible that each of these couples may not have been in love, when their vows were stated. They have a duty to society; they must not marry outside of their social class. They have a duty to their family;
A gang is an organized group with a recognized leader whose activities are either criminal or, at the very least, threatening to the community. (Walker, 2011) Throughout history there have been some infamous gangs that have gotten media attention and others that have gone under the radar. One of the more underground gang structures are prison gangs. The Nuestra Familia may not be in the news as much anymore compared to other gangs, but they are nothing to be taken lightly. Prison gangs have been around since the late 20th century and only seem to be getting stronger if nothing is going to be done to prevent them. Gangs in prison have members in and out of prison. One of the more popular gangs that has been gaining steam recently is
Born as Ray Mendoza on July 2, 1951, was born of Puerto Rican and Venezuelan descent. She was given the name Sylvia Rivera by a local community of drag queens and spent her career fighting for solidarity between transgender people, queer people of color, homeless people, and sex workers. Sylvia Rivera was one of the “street queens” living in New York, and is known as one of the most famous street youth who fought back during the police raid at Stonewall. Modern day, Rivera has come to personify the aspirations and flaws of the modern gay liberation movement.
I will tell you a tale of a woman of great success. This is a woman that has inspired me to be something great one day and to never give up trying. Though she may be growing into her elderly years she has lived a very challenging, joyful, loving and successful life. She is a woman of great faith and character, she is my grandmother.
At just over five feet tall, she was the kind of woman that you saw on the street and knew to move out of her way. Her demeanor was strict, her hands tied with thick blue veins, crisscrossing over her thin, frail fingers.
My grandmother’s house has a very special place in my heart. As the family has gotten older and we have all had our own children we do not visit as we should. I visited with my grandmother many times when I was little. Her house always seemed to have something about it that set it apart from all the rest. As you walk into the back door of her house you would notice a long, narrow kitchen that led into the main living and dining room of her house. The smell of food home cooked food was quite evident. Grandmother cooked every day and always cooked big meals on holidays for the family.
