My Interview With Ethnography

For my ethnographic fieldwork, I decided to do my research on the Jewish culture. I interviewed a friend of mine at her house, which is the field site I decided to work in. To protect her identity I changed her name to Rebecca. As soon as I got to her house I notice there was a small piece of metal on the side of her doorpost with hebrew text written on it. I enter the house and she greeted me and took me to her living room.In her living room I noticed she had a tray of bite size cookies for us and a Snapple drink. The cookies were sweet and they did not have strong odor. My friend wore black slacks a white blouse and a star necklace around her neck. After a while, her brother and father came in and I noticed they had a little cap on the top of their heads. I asked her questions about her religion and culture.

Culture is defined as the traditions, customs, norms, beliefs, values and thought patterning passed down from generation to generation (Jandt 2010). The world consists of many different cultures. In this Ethnographic Interview, I was given the opportunity to explore and learn more about a culture different from my own. Ethnographic studies can give insight into the way that stereotypes are seen and perceived in the real world. Audrey Shalinsky defines ethnographic fieldwork as a “scientific and artistic” approach to the description and analysis of cultural systems (Shalinsky, 968). I chose to do the ethnographic interview as I wanted to learn about someone else’s experiences and hear a different point of view than my own. I interviewed one of my Cambodian friends who asked if their name could be omitted for privacy purposes. He and I met at a Starbucks so that I could conduct my interview in a relaxed setting where my interviewee would feel comfortable and open to talk about his experiences as someone from Southeast Asian descent. Throughout my interview, I asked him what stereotypes he has encountered and what stereotype he himself projects onto others. He talked about how he goes about his day to day life and how that causes him to be stereotyped in a certain way and the way that he makes assumptions about others based on their lifestyles and appearances. I wanted to mainly focus on the ways that he has been racially stereotyped, but I also wanted to be able to analyze any other stereotypes that people may have developed towards him. Also, I asked him how other people stereotyping him affect him and why he thinks that other people create and use stereotypes to define people that they do not know. The project’s goal is to map historical human migration patterns by collecting and analyzing DNA samples from people from around the world. In this specific film, with the help of science we can see how people from New York each have their own unique genetic history. To begin with, deep ancestry can be traced, based off of either your mitochondria or y-chromosome. The motivation behind the study is to focus the relationship between multi-site torment and poor work capacity among social insurance suppliers since epidemiologic studies have reported that multi-site musculoskeletal agony undermines work capacity. The study utilized an advantageous testing with 254 members. They finished all surveys with reaction rate of 79.9%. 73.2% of the members were female and 6.7% male. I live in a country where I can meet people from all cultures and walks of life on a daily basis, yet still I have felt like a stranger in this “melting pot”. In the United States, the idea of diversity is a term I have heard many times when speaking of ways to heal the past of slavery and segregation, but I think that in the current political climate, diversity is seen as an enemy to the American way of life. I am an outsider in the country I call home, and my cultural background has impacted the way I see the world.

Participants for this study will be adolescents and young adults ages 13-19. Participants will be chosen using the multistage sampling method. Participants ranging in age 13-17 will be selected on a volunteer basis from local middle and high schools whose parents/caregivers have given consent to participate. Participants ages 18-19 will be randomly selected from volunteers at local colleges and universities. Ideal population would be diverse with participants from all ethnicities and social economic groups. Flyers will be handed out in all classrooms of students in the target population and placed on college and university community bulletin boards. I am from a Filipino family, but was raised in Guam, a very culturally and ethnically diverse island in the Western Pacific Ocean. Guam’s culture embraces the pluralist view of Michael Walzer 2004 that it is a place of diverse “ethnic, racial, and religious groups” (p. 635). Historically and culturally Guam has been exposed to many peoples from diverse backgrounds. But white people are usually referred to as “haole,” a Hawaiian term for a caucasian or non-native. Whether a mouse or keyboard, these tools produce different inputs or outputs for a system. one of these turns digital photos into physical photos. This peripheral is called a printer. Although not essential to operating a computer, this technology comes in handy. Many jobs or school assignments require printed photos to be added. Another tool is used to capture photos. This is called a video camera. These are usually bought separately or bought built in to a lab top. This camera can capture or record things in front of the monitor; perfect for selfies. During my High School career, I’ve become involved in many different hobbies/activities to occupy my time whether it be clubs, sports, or things outside of school. The camera has impacted my life greatly throughout my High School years. This interest isn’t only about taking pictures or making simple videos, it begins to open doors for other sparks and interests in your life.

The method I will be using for this interview is Ethnography. Ethnography is a qualitative research method used where researchers immerse themselves in other cultures for the purpose of recording information about their lifestyle for comparative research. During The interview, I asked brief questions regarding my participants religion.
