This course is the second class I take at Simmons College. Therefore, I am not too sure what to expect from the whole experience. All of my formal studies have been in Puerto Rico, thus, making this my “first” academic experience in the USA. I hope to be able to adapt to this new form of studying and make a smooth transition into my graduate years. One of my biggest goals for this course is being able to comprehend and have the ability to appropriately apply the different theories in social work. It is completely understandable that mastering them is not an option at the moment since that is something acquired over time and experience. I have encountered, studied and worked with certain theories in the past but looking back my impression is
There are several goals that I hope to achieve by pursuing a graduate degree in Social Work. Pursuing a MSW will provide me with the knowledge, tools, and skills-set that will be fundamental to the achievement my career goals outlined below.
Starting from being a certified nursing assistant, to becoming a unit secretary for a hospital that specialize in wound care, I have always known that I wanted to help individuals in need. However, I noticed that I was not happy with helping individuals in medical need. It wasn’t until I decided to continue my education that I introduced to the world of social work. Going up with a single mother that suffered from drug abuse, my family depended on social services for a lot of assistance, from everything such as food stamps to family counseling. This life experience helped guide my thoughts on pursuing social work as a career. I know that I want to help individuals that are down on their luck, but I want to take it one step farther, by providing individual counseling to adults that may need more one on one time, than what is normally given from a social service agency. Counseling will also give me a chance to do what I love most and that is to talk and get to know the individuals that I am helping make like changing decisions. Working as a clinical social work has my interest because it does not put limits on what I can do or who I can help, and it will set me up for my future goal of becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Being my own boss and changing my community is my dream job, opportunity and goal. I am currently on my way with changing my community and living my dream, because I am currently working for a non-profit
My name is Justice, I recently graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a BA in Sociology. I've decided to take this online course because I plan to pursue a career in Social Work. However, to be sure this is what I wanted, I thought it would be best to take a few classes before applying to grad programs. My favorite childhood memory is having movie night with my siblings and playing sports. I’m looking forward to a great semester with y’all.
Pacific University is a liberal arts college, which makes it possible to study completely different subjects at the same time. I am interested in studying Environmental Science and Social Work. Since these subjects are so different, it is essential for me to attend a liberal arts college. I think that Pacific University is the perfect place for me to achieve my educational goals in Social Work because of its proximity to Portland. Portland has a large problem with child/ domestic abuse and human/child trafficking. Just in 2007, 21,000 children in the Multnomah County witnessed domestic violence. From 2009 to 2013 at least 469 children in the Portland area were exploited as commercial sex workers. With Pacific University being in the Portland
There are so many professional roles social workers are prone to. They fight for the rights of others and their legitimate basic needs They are involved in locating services and assisting their clients to resources. Social workers are involved in gathering groups of people together for a variety of purposes such as community development, self-advocacy, political organization and policy change. I wish to become more competent in contacting agencies to acquire contact information and to learn about its services. I hope to facilitate greater communication between service organizations and ensuring that clients have access to resources. Social worker’s primary goal is ascertaining the needs of client networks. I'm looking forward to gaining practical
My goal is to one day become a social worker for individuals with developmental disabilities. My goal is to reach this point through undergrad and graduate education, ultimately receiving a degree. I have been accepted into my early decision school, a great four-year college where I can follow a path that will lead me to a graduate school where I can finish a social work degree. I want to go into this field simply because I want to advocate for people with disabilities and help families understand their options and find the best care possible. A year ago I created a program for teens with developmental disabilities where I host events to give the teens a “typical” high-school experience. The events are monthly and are held at a variety
My notable achievements haven’t happened yet. I’m not even halfway through my life! Possibly not even a third! So I’m going to write about what I plan to accomplish. I want to make a difference.
A few years ago, my future and my goals were clear: I would graduate in 2017 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Psychology and pursue a career in therapeutic counseling. However, my plans were altered after I was exposed to the research side of psychology. I was drawn in by the psychological insight shed on tragedies like the holocaust, why no witnesses helped Kitty Genovese after she had been stabbed, how a rape victim can misremember his or her assailant, and possible solutions to decrease prejudiced attitudes. What once seemed like “the mysterious way life works,” could suddenly be explored and better understood through scientific research. This intriguing field continues to answer tough questions and offer solutions on
At the beginning of the course, I feel that I was naive about my professional knowledge about the field of social work. I had a false knowledge about what the field entailed
In the communications program, there are various courses which would benefit my future career goals of becoming a social worker. The main characteristic of a social worker involves being able to talk and understand people from various backgrounds. So, any communication class I am studying in would assist in building the foundation for my upcoming profession. Three courses, taught here at ULM, that I believe would benefit me the most would be Communication and Conflict (Comm 3010), Interpersonal Communication (Comm 1018), and Persuasion (Comm 3030). From the description, the communication and conflict course teaches about the possible scenarios in which conflict could arise and how to best handle the situation. Interpersonal communication teaches on the conversations between small groups of individuals and understanding how to read nonverbal messages. The persuasion course’s description explains that the class focuses on the values and approaches of persuasive communication. I feel that each of these classes would help me become more comfortable speaking with others and create a self-assured tone when speaking. Each of these three classes would definitely benefit my future career goals. As an aspiring social worker, I will be working with a small group or one-on-one and the interpersonal communication course would prepare me for how to understand individual mannerisms. Both the conflict and persuasion courses could help when dealing with difficult cases who have trouble
The knowledge that was learned from each course and the frameworks learned from each one will be integrated into this course along with the new frameworks being taught. The writer can also take this new knowledge and reflect on past experiences to determine if this could have been a better fit. The writer will read all course material and then analyze the material, they will then try to compare and contrast it to their current beliefs and experience in the field. The social work program is designed to give students both the academic knowledge combined with the real world hands on experience, it is then their job to combine the two and use it in a practical setting.
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
I’d always dreamed of a happy ending. A perfect family, a job that made me happy. But that’s not quite how my life turned out; things never seem to go my way. But, however bad life got it was all down to me. Everything that has happened is because of me, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forgive myself.
Hello, I am Marhitza Rico. I am a freshmen and majoring in Human Development and Family Science. I plan to hopefully become a social worker and be able to work with children from many backgrounds. I am interested to learn about geography in hopes of learning more about other cultures and their home lands. I want to be able to appreciate the land and not just travel for sightseeing. I believe, that learning other cultures would be extremely beneficial too me. Since, I will be working with children having an understanding of their customs can help create a common ground. I come from a strong Hispanic background however, I have only visited Mexico twice in my lifetime. I am also interested in traveling and hope to hear about places that are not
