Favorite Mistake To most athletes, an injury is something they don’t even think about until it happens. Sometimes it could mean missing a couple plays or a whole season. Either way, injuries are something that usually does not bring joy to athletes and those around them. This is where my story is unique. In my athletic career leading up to my freshman year, I had been a fairly healthy kid from an injury standpoint. I could never have guessed that one of the worst injuries an athlete can go through would happen to me. I blew out my left knee. It was early June. My eight grade year came to an end and I had one thing on my mind, even though I was just a freshman, and that was varsity football. Our middle school team had been the most successful team that our school had ever had and we hoped to …show more content…
I went for defensive line, but the coaches wanted everyone to do both offense and defense. I would be a fullback on offense so I went with the running backs. The coaches set up stations and my first station was running through a rope ladder. This specific ladder was different than the one that the school used to have. This particular one was about two feet in the air. I went through the ropes and did the specific footwork that the coaches wanted to see. It was the second to last rep of going through and I was up. I was almost all the way through when I felt my right ankle turn in, and to catch myself I stuck out my left leg. Wrong choice. I should've just let myself fall and sprain my ankle. Instead when I caught myself my left knee hyperextended and caved in at the same time. I then fell and my whole left leg was numb. I will never forget the feeling I felt when my knee was just gone. I later found out that my knee was pretty much gone and my entire freshman year would have nothing to do with playing
Sports are great to keep you in shape and to have fun but there is also a heavy risk of getting injured. Injuries such as pulling a hamstring or breaking an arm can lead to many complications. There are 2 injuries that are pretty common but they are some of the worst injuries. That is an ACL tear and a concussion.
It was the aftermath of the Friday night game that I’ve given any signs of an injury, and my family and close ones felt sorrow for me and the following Monday. Throughout my life, peers and elders engraved an image onto me being that sports held a bright future for me, and it will lead to the true path of greatness, and one single injury puts me an aggravating, melancholy rut. Viewing my teammates playing angered me since the injury forced me into a world of therapy for the rest of the season. All the promises I made for myself were undone, athletic scholarships, the path to greatness, and my only school pastime and passion flowed throughout my body and into a pipe dream.
In the NCAA tournament Louisville player Kevin Ware suffered a horrific injury to his lower right leg while attempting to block an opposing player’s shot. Six months later, Ware was healed and back to practicing. Ware got lucky and could still play the game, others have not been so lucky and end up not being able to play sports again. The NCAA and the National Athletic Trainers' Association have an injury surveillance system that collects injury reports submitted by trainers and compile injury statistics for the roughly 380,000 male and female college
Getting hurt while playing sports is no fun, especially if it happens to you twice in the same season or should I say year. Having to watch your teammates train and compete while you are sitting on the sidelines really stinks, in fact it sucks.
It was seventh grade year, I was one of the smallest kids in my grade. My biggest dream at that time was to start on the seventh grade A team as a linebacker. The first day of practice we went to the defensive position that we wanted to play, so therefore I went to the linebacker coach. When I went over there he just laughed at me and told me to go over to the safety coach because I was just to small. So I did and ended up being decent at the position. Thankfully I was able to go to the position on offence that I wanted, which was running back. I ended up starting B team as a safety and a running back.
Bruises, messy hair, bloody knees, dirt stained socks, anxious parents critiquing from the stands and intense coaches pushing you to work harder; growing up I played competitive softball, I competed around the country dreaming of being recruited. Church, friends, family, even school were a second priority for me. As junior year approached, I was injured and forced to have an atypical surgery. I tore my rotator cuff and labrum completely and damaged almost every other muscle in my arm. Injuries are defined as harm that causes someone to not be fully
It was that time of the year again, football season. Football is a sport in which I am very passionate about, I never knew I could or would be so passionate towards something, until one very specific game. It was a Saturday afternoon, the breeze was just right, the temperature was just right; not to cold and not too hot. Being the first game of the season I didn’t know if I was going to play or not. However, I was proven wrong Coach Smith hollered “Shawn!” I stood up startled at first and right then and there I knew that was my moment to shine and shine is what I did.
When it comes to sports there is one injury that everyone reasonably fears as one of worst injury’s I’m talking about concussions, there is a lot relatively a lot new information out there on concussions some true and some not so true. Being an athlete my entire life, and playing sports such as football, basketball I have received concussions before, I know what they feel like and I also know the pressure that is placed on you to continue playing through the injury. whether it be a concussion or not That’s one of the big problems with the concussion epidemic players don’t want to be thought of as “week” or “baby’s” because they got hit and left the game, there whole team is counting on you, and you don’t want to let them down.
Most collegiate athletes receive injuries during his or her athletic career. There is an astonishing 750,000 injuries reported per year in the United States. Injuries are the worst part of being a college competitor. Even worse, is the possibility of a requiring injury or multiple injuries in one’s career? Breaking a bone or tearing a muscle puts both a physical and mental toll on the athlete. It sucks to
I played football in high school for all 4 years. My freshmen and sophomore year I wasn't very good. I was a backup and never played. Then came along my junior year, I was still undersized and didn't start but I improved my skill greatly and I started to increase my work ethic. The off-season before my junior year I went hard in the weight room and became strong. I also lost some weight and gained some height. That's hard work in the offseason is what lead to me having a great senior year. My senior year was full of emotion, I felt tired, determined, and at the end of the season I felt sadness with no regret and the love for my brothers. The first thing we had to do to become a great team was build a brotherhood with kids who wanted to try.
Almost everyone who has played on a sports team at some point in their life can say they sustained an injury at one point or another. Sometimes these injuries are completely unpreventable and the only thing that can be done is being more aware of that certain injury. Concussions in high school sports is a prime example. This because the potential negative effects of a concussion can be life altering. The effects of sustaining a concussion during high school can be worse than sustaining one in college or in professional sport because that is most crucial time in the brains growth.
This was the last time my friends and I would ever play together. Our season wasn’t going as planned because we only won two games out of eight. We knew we would be haunted for the rest of our lives if we lost our last game of our season. We quickly stopped the opponent’s offense by a 10 yard sack by me and other great defensive plays. In addition our offense swiftly put up 14 points. Time seemed to be going by at a fast rate because before we knew it, it was half time. Our coach give us the usual “We need to do better” speech. He also said there was a special guest that wanted to see us. My coach brought in a fellow classmate I was friends with that had gotten into a really bad car accident and had brain damage. I realized that the football game we were all emotional about was nothing in the big scheme of things. This kid had damage and wasn’t complaining at all, while we were all complaining about only having one game left to play. This fellow classmate motivated me to do better for him. We ended up winning the game 41-0, but my outlook on life changed in that single
When you get injured it’s like a dream crusher. You’ve worked so hard to get this far, but then it comes back to haunt you. When you do recover you’re don’t have the same energy level. Kyle Hardrick lost his basketball scholarship at Oklahoma after he tore his meniscus. Jason
When an athlete is told they have an injury their initial response isn’t going to go over very well. They experience sadness, anger, irritation, frustration, isolation, sleeping problems, and much more. In some cases the athlete can have a psychological response to the injury that results in serious mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, drug abuse, and disordered eating. Not all athletes will respond in the same way or even experience the same responses to an injury. How an athlete takes the news of an injury and how to approach the situation weighs heavily on their own personality. Also different injuries will have a different effect on the athlete. (Putukian) Not all athletes will respond in this way, but it is not abnormal for them to. Most athletes are competing in a sport that they love and have a passion for. So when they are injured it becomes devastating for some. This leads to the athlete worrying about her ability to perform again. They might fear losing their skills, conditioning, strength, and being apart of the
My sophomore year I did not expect to be playing varsity until the coach came
