Learning to Read
As far back into my childhood as I can remember my grandmother was always the person who had read me stories and taken me to the library to check out books. I was a book nerd and all I wanted to do was read. I came across a book in my fifth grade class by Shel Silverstein and fell in love with his work after reading “The Land of the Happy" from Where the Sidewalk Ends. Curled up in the corner with a book used to be the only place you could find me. Poetry is my favorite form of writing because it is just so simple and short although it can hold so much meaning and feeling. One day my grandma took me to the library and I came across Shel Silverstein’s Falling Up poetry book. I took it home and found myself lost in his words. The next day, I hopped out of my grandpa’s truck and marched my little legs inside to check out all of the other books by him.
She would pick me up and set me on her lap to read to me. “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein was always my favorite book to read because when I was little I wanted to be just like the tree who gave to everybody and helped them out. But when I was little, I didn't realized that wasn't what it really meant. When I got older, I figured out it truly shows how much sacrifice is put into those that you love and care for. The tree would give the boy her branches to swing from and apples to sell whenever he needed. When the tree got old, she still stood as a stump for the now, old man to sit on and was happy to see
People are drawn to poetry because it uses words to express emotions that most people
Many people think that poetry is a beautiful thing to either listen to or even write about. Personally, I don’t like to write poetry because I believe that it is very boring. It is just not that interesting to me at all personally. I love to write anything from short stories to essays, but I do not like to read and write poetry. The one and only thing I enjoy and like about poetry is listening to someone who is really good at writing poetry and reading it aloud to people.
During sophomore year, we’d practice annotating, and analyzing poetry for inspirational purposes and to perfect our craft. Poetry is my
Poems are the most simplistic way to express one’s feelings and beliefs through writing. Poets mostly try express love, loss, death, some may speak from their own experience or for the sake of their characters who tend to be quite sophisticated. They tend to write about these 3 topics commonly due to the fact that practically everyone has experienced this sort of emotion. Poetry has existed since man could write, to Aristotle, to Victorian times and now to the present day where it is internationally used. Poems are now used to promote movements for the benefit of the world, varying from poverty to the sustainability of the environment; of which most have been successful due to poetry being able to connect with the reader, even if they are not in the same situation. However they are still able to feel what their character is feeling and what state of mind they are in. Poems also tend to be short so that the reader does not loose concentration nor loose the power of the poem, but instead the poet chooses to write to a short limithowever they choose their words carefully so that the reader will be intrigued and contemplated the whole way through the poem however leave the poembeing fascinated.
I've read since childhood ALOT but I started writing in 5th or 4th grade when a teacher made the effort to have a short story and poem published in highlights magazine. She was the first person to really support me as a kid and I have to thank her...
I could finally relate to a world beyond me and felt the need to interact with it through poetry. One of the first poems that I loved was called “I Am a Winner”. To say it was amazing is an understatement! The words on the paper seemed to talk and exist as people right in front of me. I was finally reading something interestingly vivid yet vague, telling and untelling all at the same time. It was expression at it’s purist. It was poetry. I realized then that I liked reading and writing poetry. Dr. Seuss was fine and all, but this was about being able to feel and taste green eggs and ham, not simply talking about it. It was about poetry giving me the courage to express my own uniqueness and being proud of what sets me apart from others. It was about falling in love with reading in the best form- short, sweet, and meaningful. The “I am a Winner” poem along with many other poems led me to write and read poetry and that’s very important to me. To this day I always take my green eggs with
If I were poet, I would write poetry for many reasons, but the most important reason is to express myself. Writing poems is the best to express yourself, because you can write a sad poem if you felling sad. Also, you can write love poems and spinning when you are falling in love. It represents what I
When trying to begin a musical project, I like to listen to other types of music for inspiration. If you are a writer or a songwriter, reading different types of literary work helps initiate your creativity. Thanks to my wonderful wife, I get to listen to different types of music she likes at home and in the car. You’d be surprise at the types of music you will start liking that you never thought you would like. The same concept applies to songwriting. Reading poems will help you see different ways to structure thoughts that you are trying to convey to your audience because in the end, song lyrics are poems,
I cannot recall a time in which words were not paramount to my life. As a child my mother would read to me; an English teacher, she instilled in me a lifelong love of literature. When I was old enough to write she would have me practice in pastel chalk on the porch and in translucent purple folders both print and cursive. My sister and I inhaled novels beyond our years and began to write stories filled with things we thought we knew. This is roughly how my love of writing was born.
The events that have taken place over the past couple of centuries, and more so the past decade, have monumentally impacted the relationship between the United States and China for better and for worse. Today, China and the U.S. have evolved into two of the most elite superpowers in the world, and they classify as some of the most prominent leaders in economics, military, technology, and universal innovation. Currently, the United States is just weeks away from electing their next president, cyber-attacks are being investigated exponentially, and the South China Sea Debate continues to be disputed. The outcomes of all these events will undoubtedly affect the relationship between China and the United States for the next 10 years.
Poetry is a form of English that I like to call free. I say it is free because there are no boundaries to what you can say and there is no wrong way to write poetry. Poetry allows the act of expression to exist without the consistency of having to worry about punctuation, complete sentences, and length. Another aspect of poetry I enjoy is the interpretation one receives while reading. A poem can have many interpretations because no two people think alike or read things the same.
Writing is an amazing tool and talent. It is incredible to be able to express my feelings and thoughts on paper through thoroughly thought over words in fancy fictional poetry or possibly persuasive prose, utilizing fun literary devices and bending my readers’ minds to feel whatever it is I intend for them to feel. As a reader, it is awe-inspiring to immerse myself in the worlds that authors paint for me in their verbose narrations. I tend to very much enjoy both reading and writing as long as I am not being forced to do either.
In kindergarten we didn’t read much, however we wrote a lot. We worked for hours after hours of tracing letters and making them perfect. Most kids could only write their name and very small words. In first grade was when we started taking spelling and grammar tests. In second grade was when we got assigned reading buddies. They were kids in the fourth or fifth grade and came to read to us once a week. A lot of times we ended up reading to them, it was our choice of what we wanted to do. I loved reading buddies because we got time to read and we didn’t get as much time as other subjects did. We started learning cursive in third grade and it was very difficult at first for me. I could never write a cursive “a” without picking up my pencil. Looking back at that now, I am glad I was given the opportunity to learn cursive. In my elementary school now it is not a part of the curric The best activity was the I Love to Read competition that WSBT held each year in February. In our elementary the teachers made it a competition between each grade level. Whatever grade had the most reading minutes there was a big prize. That reading challenge inspired me to read books that I thought I could never
Poetry is a very fascinating based literature that can express the emotions of an individual whether it be about love, happiness or even anger. It has so many different uses that ultimately get the point that is trying to be made across, but its not as easy as it may seem to create a work of literature art. Having imagination and creativity is what is necessary, but without that, there will only be an occurrence of random words that happen to rhyme when put together, but even to that extent, poetry is so much more and the poem by Wilfred Owen, Dulce et Decorum Est surely shows that poetic art is something that takes time to achieve.
Poetry is storytelling in a way that doesn’t have to make sense. We can interpret it in almost any way we want to, and it will almost always touch our heart. Poetry has been a vital piece of my life, as a child, I read poetry books upon poetry books, and as I grew into a teenager I wrote poetry. Today, I love poetry as much if not more than I did 15 years ago. It helped me to appreciate literature as a child, and allowed me to value literature in a way I didn’t know before. Reading poetry had a huge influence on my view of literature as I grew, and I believe strongly that it can have the same power on other children too. This text set is compiled of books about poems, books containing many short poems, and books that in its entirety are a poem. Not all poems rhyme, it’s fun to read them, and they don’t take too much time!
