My family history
"In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.” –Alex Haley This quote explained to me the importance of my grandparent’s legacy and their history. A long twisting family tree inspires one who does not know where their roots originated. My grandfather Frank Douglas and my grandmother Delores Jones gave me a reason to find out where our legacy started. My grandfather Frank Kelow was adopted into a four person white family, which gave

She was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana where her parents worked several jobs to maintain the tiny shack she was raised in. “Back in my day society consisted of smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, and partying heavily” (Jones). At the age of 13, she was required to work to earn extra money around the house. Some chores my grandmother had around the house was to clean the house, wash the dishes, wash clothes, and pull weeds from the lawn. The relationship between my grandmother and her parents was quite the opposite of mine with my parents. “After completing my chores, I was allowed to do basically whatever, as long as I was in the house at a reasonable hour” (Jones). Delores was a very social person. “I rarely spent time with my grandparents” (Jones). During her high school years she was often looked at as beautiful, ambitious, and persistent. At the age of 18 she was elected as prom queen for her senior dance. Although she was often free to do what she wanted, she was also held responsible. Delores was sometimes whooped and grounded for disobeying curfew rules and not completing her chores. This gave her everlasting the mentality of you must work for everything you want in life.
Douglas 3 I was born in Mississauga, Canada on the date of February 23, 1993. The name Kobie was given to me by my mother, it means warrior. Raised in a family with both parents, one-brother, and one sister, I was surrounded by people who loved me.

In relation to self-identity, as I was reading Kelley’s discussion of the working class whites, I couldn’t help but to think of my own family during this time. My great grandparents on my mother’s

Stories told by a grandfather or an great aunt give a family its character, but no matter how much information you learn, there is always more; there are more adventures and more tragedy and more lessons. Hearing the stories of a relative’s experiences as a child, at high school, or how they raised their first child brings a family one step closer to that person and their family’s history. It is important to talk to family members and to record the stories of older relatives before they die and their stories die with them. The stories of the Coss-McDaniel family range from the humor of my dad being born in a bathtub to the tragedy of my Grandma Coss becoming paralyzed when my mother was only twelve.
Our pasts are dependably with us. Regardless of where our lives decides to lead us, regardless of the amount we choose to develop, the way we once were, or the way our predecessors
Since I have always had such a fascination with genealogy, I thought it an honorable undertaking to research our ancestry. I wish someone had done it fifty years ago so that I might have access to more information on our direct line of ancestors, other than the word of mouth passed down through the generations that I’ve had to rely on and what little I have found digging through dusty courthouse records.”
History is defined as the study of the science of humanity in the past. It's a broad subject that spans over countless people groups throughout the years that the world has been around. Even before the times we have written word history was still being made, and it is still extremely important. We tend to forget that in our average day to day lives we are still making history. That all over the globe everyone is taking part in what might be in a history book someday.
“Some say our destiny is tied to the land, as much a part of us as we are of it. Others say fate is woven together like a cloth, so that one’s destiny intertwines with many others. It’s the one thing we search for, or fight to change. Some never find it. But there are some who are led.”
The word migration can have a very different meaning to each individual. In the dictionary it is defined as the movement of people from one country or locality to another. I now see the word with such a deeper meaning no only is it the group of people moving, but in fact how they moved and the struggles they had to go through. Before I sat down with both of my parent and asked them about my “roots” I had no idea how difficult migration from Mexico to the US was for both of my parents families. I never took the time to listen to little details on how exactly they ended up in this country. After I took the time to listen to my elder relatives and parents talk about how they use to
Family history is very important to an individual. By knowing where you come from, you can have a better perspective of your life. Having a clear understanding of your family background allows you to better appreciate the things that you would normally take for granted. The house, the car, and the average clothing may look better when one sees the sacrifices their family has made. They will see that their family has worked very hard just so their family can experience the better things in life. A persons roots and origin is one of the most important things to explore. It alone can bring you closer to self-discovery.
The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950’s was probably considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family as a, “Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship” (Beebe, Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the traditional family, which includes a mother, father, and their biological children. Next, is the blended family which includes
As young children my grandparents, on both my maternal and paternal sides, immigrated to the United States from Norway. Both my mother and father were born and raised in Seattle, Washington. A strength throughout my family is the longevity of the women. Although my maternal grandmother, aunt, and mother have all battled breast cancer, they were able to discover it early. Accessible health care provided each of them with the opportunity to continue their lives with little repercussions. All three of them are now in excellent health. Additionally, my paternal grandmother is currently 82 and does not have any health issues. My family strongly values physical activity and healthy eating habits. Despite any adversity throughout my family mental
No one can’t meet a family like mine’s. My family is well diversified. Every family member plays an important role in all my family’s lives. In my family, there are four people: my father, my mother, my little brother and me. My father is one who brings money home and is also responsible for organizing and planning family trips. My mother is the one who is in charge for making meals and makes sure everyone eats at the appropriate times. My little brother is the pet of the family. He actually doesn’t have any responsibilities, for he’s the pet. I am the rock of support in my family. I always go beyond my parents’ expectations. I also support my younger cousins and little brother, by being a role model that they can look up to. Another
Do you have any family or friend traditions? If you do you should know what a tradition is and if you don't or you are not sure. A family tradition is a time were you gather up with your family. So the time that you have the tradition that would be the only time that they could see them. Now I am going to tell you about some of the traditions that me and my family have together each year.
