Growing up learning about my culture background was never really important to me up until now. I always assume that all I needed to know was that I'm African American nothing more nothing less. Entering this class and being on this topic has really made me wonder what really is my culture background. As I was reading on different cultures I was realizing that with my culture women can do anything a man can do. That’s with building buildings, fixing anything that’s broken, playing all kinds of sports and so much more. It doesn't matter if you’re a man and your cooking in the kitchen just like it doesn't matter if you're a woman and your working in the fields. The only thing that’s different with men and women is that ones a male and the other …show more content…
They have a different background and culture that’s quite different from the African American culture. Caucasians are one of the cultures that’s not living as a stereotype or had to go through slavery in their culture. Unlike my culture we (African American) live in a society that labels us African Americans as stereotypes and yes we did have to go through slavery. They say that white people always owned slaves but in all nationality all kinds of races kept slaves throughout slavery history. I learned that Caucasians aren't as bad as maybe your ancestors tries to portray them. My great grandmother used to work for a white family but never did they treat her like she was a slave or one of their workers; they treated her as if she was family. Whenever they had a family gathering they always made sure my grandmother and her family was there because and their eyes my grandmother was apart of them. Majority of African American culture is known through oral tradition. If you think about a white person trait a black person wouldn’t come to mind as well as when you think of an black person a white person wouldn’t come to mind. Well that’s what I thought until my grandmother was telling me about my great grandfather. Being that he was mixed he only had the Italian hair but the American accent. At first I thought that he used to live in Italy but once again I was wrong. My great grandfather mother once lived in Italy. When she found out she was pregnant she soon moved to Virginia. In this paper I discuss the African-American culture in regards to values, norms and beliefs.
Regardless of their race, people need to know where they came from and why. Historically, we know that at least 450 years ago, or more, Africans were captured in their home and forcibly brought to the Americas on slave ships to work for landowners. Unfortunately, the Africans brought to the colonies were seen as inferior to the European settlers. Because of this feeling of superiority, the Africans were thought to be the property of the settlers and as such a vast majority were treated harshly. At that point in history, the Africans had lost their identity, and now that hundreds of years had passed the African-Americans have regained their identity. They painted their face black color, and made their mouth red color. Few white people treat very bad African American. They destroy their property. They killed a lot of people who were innocent such as children, elderly, and youth. Some white people did not even think about that those people were human like them. However, that people truly did not understand the background and culture of African American. Every good think African American does. White people want to use it. Usually, they did not allow them to do anything because they want to control them.

Africans have, since the early settlement of America, has had a great influence in the nation’s growth. These contributions to the United States from enslaved Africans have been greatly portrayed in American culture. Varying from cuisine, to song and dance are not only portrayed today but it has a deep-rooted impact throughout the United States. During the middle passage, enslaved Africans were forced to abandon their everyday lives, their families and their homes and forced to adapt to a new lifestyle they knew nothing of. However, upon arrival into the New World, due to their prior knowledge and wisdom from back home, they were able to quickly adapt and custom themselves to this new lifestyle in order to survive with the hope of potentially one day returning back to Africa. Unfortunately, African contributions to the culture of the United States has received little to no recognition and it has been taken credit for by Europeans and Whites since the early establishment of the United States.
This year has been one of the most significant of my life so far. I feel that about every year, but I think that 2016 is a record breaker. I’ve gotten my anxiety more under control, and I feel confident and comfortable in my skin. School-wise I’m still a mess. I’m still trying my best but not doing as well as I hoped, but soon all these grades will be meaningless and I can finally be free.
