In 2012, a woman by the name of Imane Boudlal is forced to quit her job at Disneyland because she wanted to wear a hijab. She was hired before she decided to start wearing it, and when she eventually started wearing a hijab, Disney told her she was not allowed. If she wanted to wear her hijab, she would have to work out of sight of the customers or wear a hijab that Disney designed for her. These hijabs did not meet her standards and she would not be forced to work in the back so she ended up quitting before she was demoted or fired (Huus, 2012). This case of discrimination is not unique to Imane Boudlal. Muslim woman across America face huge amounts of discrimination and cruelty in the workplace for wearing a hijab while at work. There were more than likely some cases of discrimination against a hijab wearing Muslim woman, but they were not widespread across the United States. The discrimination seen was also not because of islamophobia or an ignorance of the Islamic faith, but rather racism from those who feel that they are superior due to their race. In an article written by Jen’Nan Ghazal Read, twenty-four Muslim women from Austin, Texas are interviewed. Twelve of these women wore a hijab and twelve did not. The interviews took place before the attacks of September 11th, so their answers are very different from what would be said today. One of the women states in her interview that “With hijab, men take us more seriously” (Read, 2000). This shows that the hijab is not a factor that inhibited women before September 11th, 2001, but it helped them advance instead. Another woman states “men: "If you're in hijab, then someone sees you and treats you accordingly. I feel more free. Especially men, they don't look at your appearance-they appreciate your intellectual abilities. They respect you.” (Read, 2000).
