Music Performance: The Elements of Expression and Emotion Project Study Summary & Background: Music is an art form that has continued to be practiced and expressed over the past few hundred years. It is commonly used as a multi-national form of nonverbal communication, meaning that it is the universal language that is understood amongst all cultures. While music is commonly used for enjoyment and leisure, it has the capacity to take on many other qualities. Music is the type of expressive art form that allows a wide range of emotions to be expressed, ranging from happiness to sadness and everything in between. I plan to focus on highlighting a couple of studies that focus on the correlation between musical performance and expression. One study in particular, will focus on each individual playing short monophonic pieces, that are possibly well-known by the individual, a piece they had previously learned, or a piece that they have performed / learned by ear. This particular study focuses on using the following instruments: violin, flute, saxophone, electric guitar, singing voice, guitar rock band, synthesizer and percussive instruments. The purpose of this study is to analyze several individuals' interpretation of pieces of music they have previously learned/played, along with performing well-known pieces. Also in my research, I have found a different approach to musical expression and performance in a different aspect: nonverbal communication and emotional expression. In the research that I have found, a specific article on nonverbal communication and emotion discusses the functionalism in the research of both categories.
