On September 9, 1991 a discovery was made that changed scientist’s view on the Neolithic and Copper Era forever. What was found turned out to be the oldest frozen mummy ever in history. Little did scientists know that what they could have on their hands is a murder.
A body was found by two German tourists near the east ridge of the Fineilspitze in the Ötztal Alps on the Austrian–Italian border. At first the Germans thought that what they found was just another body of an unfortunate person. However, when scientist’s got their hands on it, it was actually and 5,000 year old corpse. Due to the body being found in the Alps mountains, they named it Ötzi. From research, Ötzi had lived during the Neolithic Era and the beginning of the Copper Age. During this time it was said that it had a very violent characteristic. When Ötzi was being examined by scientist, they

Burying the dead with goods was also common because they had beliefs of the afterlife and doing so meant that when death comes knocking at their front door, they shall have the necessity of what they need. In a video they said that when sacrifices were made, usually arrows were to be broken in half which is exactly what happened with Ötzi’s arrows. Also Ötzi’s body was cover with about 50 tattoos as well as a rock with a carving of a man shooting another man with a bow and that’s exactly what happened with Ötzi. With the copper axe, he must have been a man with great power and to leave his axe behind with him wouldn’t make any sense. If he was of such great importance then why not take it? I mean who wouldn’t want to have that power? Unless of course it was a sacrifice. I believe that Ötzi was in a battle and got captured and was used as a sacrifice for the killer’s gods. I also think that because it was the beginning of the Copper Age, the whole idea of copper axes being powerful was just starting to travel around and hadn’t reached everyone
An unscrupulous archaeologist by the name of Henirich Hochstetter excavated the Shoen-Tell site in Turkey in the late 1920s. Hochstetter was interested more in antiquities than in data, so he provided little substantive information tot eh professional community about his dig or his findings. However, a conscientious assistant of Hochstetter’s, Roxanne Browne, managed to collect detailed information on fifty of the burials Hochstetter plundered. Her data is
Several well-known historical films such as The Mummy, Disney’s Pocahontas, Gladiator, Marie Antoinette and Shakespeare in Love are often portrayed based on stereotypes where historical people and events are altered for the sole purpose of entertainment. Take for example the film, The Mummy (1999), which was set in ancient Egypt. The mysterious and yet thrilling element of mummies associated with the belief of curses, along with the Egyptian culture, beliefs and architecture enthrall people to this specific genre. Although The Mummy (1999) teems with suspense and anticipation, it is embellished with false facts and distorts the ancient Egyptian culture to captivate the viewers. Not only did the film manipulate several ancient Egyptian facts

Some archaeologists have also speculated that Ötzi may have been a victim of a ritual sacrifice, perhaps for being a chieftain. It is believed that he may have been a chieftain due to the numerous tattoos of symbols and markings on his body.
Ötzi lived in a time when people were shifting towards a lifestyle of storing food instead of hunting and gathering, which caused jealousy and fights because some people stored more food than others. Ötzi was a very important man who probably held a position of power, indicated by his copper axe, a very valuable item during the end of the Stone Age. Since Ötzi’s killer was someone he knew, the person who killed him most likely killed him in order to take Ötzi’s position of power. This would explain why all of Ötzi’s items, including the copper axe, were left behind because Ötzi’s killer did not want to be identified as the person who killed Ötzi. Ötzi was killed by an arrow that was removed from his back, meaning that Ötzi’s killer would have had to get close enough to Ötzi to be able to remove the arrow, also meaning that
The Process of Mummification The earliest ancient Egyptians buried their dead in small pits in the
Over time, bogs reveal extremely well-preserved, fascinating artifacts, called bog mummies. Bog mummies are like a time machine. They give people insight about how life was like dating as far back as The Bronze Age!
This film was about mummies from 18th century Hungary and how they helped find information on the tuberculosis resistant gene. These 200 mummies were found underneath an old Hungarian church and after the priest called in ethnographers they soon found out that they had stumbled across well preserved mummies. Word from this got to an Australian surgeon turned archaeologist who studied tuberculosis genes in dead bodies. He flew to Hungary and studied these mummies and after working with some colleagues in London they found out that more than half of the mummies were infected, which meant that the small Hungarian town had been plagued. After this, another colleague studied bone samples from the mummies and discovered that the tuberculosis
Over 10 years ago, a strange discovery was made. Way back in 1991 some hikers were hiking in the Otztal Alps; a mountain range on the border of Italy and Austria. They found a body and assumed that it was from another hiker but it wasn’t. Since they had special tools, they decided to investigate and dig out the body and along with the body came other interesting objects. The hikers found a copper axe, a flint-tipped dagger, a little fire-starting kit, and a birchbark container holding embers wrapped in maple leaves.
Taking the train ride to Manhattan on one of the coldest snowing morning was initially the worst experience about my visit to metropolitan museum, until to my surprise the art work inside melted all those feelings away. Although art is not something that I can draw learning about ancient history however has given me a new outlook. I chose the Mummy Artemidora from Egypt because I find the process to mummification very interesting during class lecture and the bronze diskos thrower from Greek because of his manly and perfect body. The two artifacts that I will be talking about are from the ancient Egyptians and the
Throughout history, the mummy has been stereotyped as no more than an egyptian deceased wrapped in cloth, whose spirit returns from the dead in order to haunt mankind. However, as literature and mythology present, Mummies exist in modern context promptly as scorned lovers, scientists, past rulers, wronged souls, or a combination of all. In deconstructing the Mummy, the statement of “We are creatures that require social interaction” often comes to mind. After all, even in death we are infrequently capable of surviving without the companionship of family, loved ones, friends, or the presence of another soul.
Did you know that there are many ways to mummify something, and sometimes thing mummify themselves. Many people believe that mummies are only in egypt but mummified humans and animals have been found all over the world. Places like egypt have been mummifying the dead for many years, “Egyptologists once thought that the practice of formally mummifying the dead began about 4,500 years ago during the reign of Khufu, who built the largest of the pyramids at Giza.” The process of mummification would take 70 days to complete. In some places they would take out the organs and sometimes chop of the heads, of the dead. Although, they would leave the heart; this was a spiritual type ordeal. Because it was considered the soul, after the removal of organs
Desert mummies of the Andean countries were first discovered in 1875 in Peru. They were found deep in underground shafts, and looked to be purposely preserved. They had been wrapped in leaves, seaweed, furs, cloth, and grass. Along with being well wrapped and covered, scientist also found that they had been mummified partially naturally. It was proven that the mummies had been dried out and preserved greatly from the dry, arid desert weather
Due to a lack of primary sources, archaeologists have only just recently begun to truly explore the historical presence of body piercings. Ötzi the Iceman, a 5,300 year old natural mummy found near the border between Austria and Italy, was found to have an ear piercing (ATI 1). The Ancient
When we hear the word “mummy” we usually think of horror movies, cartoons and our favorite dress up holiday “Halloween”, but we never really think of the deep significant value mummies have given our world. On a recent trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science I discover the fascinating truth behind mummies. I had the great pleasure of exploring one of the most amazing exhibits called “Mummies of the World”, and got to learn many interesting things like what they stand for and most importantly who they where.
