Although discrimination and racism is common in today’s society, it is not rare to find a child with many mixed heritages.

Today, becoming culturally aware at an early age will create more conflict in the future regarding racism. Teaching that we all are all different from one another will only do each other harm in the long run. If Americans do teach multiculturism, the minds of younger children would evolve to think it would be awesome to be a certain race and uncool to be another. It is important for students to understand that it is okay to affiliate with different cultures and learn from them. To learn from another is to grow as a person and be successful in life. According to the past, when racism was prominent in society, Americans are actually doing well in becoming more diverse. More people are learning how to work with others and respect others’ ideals.

I think that little kids don’t know what racism is, but their parents are the ones that raise them the way they are, being racist. How can we tell when kids are being racist? Well because you see kids at school and they have their own little groups with their own race. Whites with whites, blacks with blacks, Latinos with Latinos, etc. A lot of little kids don’t like playing with kids of a different race, we see that in places like daycare or preschool.

Children are now growing up in a time when the cultural and ethnic structure of our country is quickly changing and in some areas groups of people who were formally considered as the ‘ethnic’ minority make up the majority of the population.

Many people in the United States have either experienced or witnessed some form of discrimination in their lifetimes, and one person, in particular, was Brent Staples, an African-American man who lived in New York during the mid-1970’s, which was not too long after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. Racial tensions in the United States were still considerably high back then, and this led to racism and discrimination towards others based on their social statuses such as race, class, and gender, and Staples himself has dealt with this issue numerous times in the past, which inspired him to write and to share his own thoughts and experiences about this controversial topic. He believed that even though black men were statistically more likely to get convicted of crimes than any other racial or minority group, it didn’t mean that all black men were violent criminals. He chose to format his writing into a personal essay for his story to have a more personal tone to it that anyone who reads it can easily relate to. The purpose of this text was to raise public awareness of the unfair discrimination in a society that Staples, along with many others, had encountered time and time again. It was written for both the general public and anyone who has also experienced discrimination to use as motivation to try to better themselves and make people realize that not all of them fit the stereotypes that society has set towards certain minority groups. Over the winter, my dad wanted to visit some family members in Canada so my whole family decided to go together as a little vacation. At first, as we were going through the security checkpoint, we were laughing and messing around in Farsi, but all of a sudden we were stopped by a few security guards. They asked my father to step to the side so that they could do a random screening and my dad, although he gave no reason to be considered suspicious, agreed. However, this “random screening” began with the guards asking my dad where he was born, how long he’s lived in the United States, and what were his religious affiliations all the while looking at him as if they already knew he was dangerous without even allowing him to prove them wrong. As I was watching their exchange, I realized that society does not truly accept Middle Eastern people and their culture. Ever since the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, racial bias has become more prominent against Arabs and Muslims and as a born American citizen with a Middle Eastern heritage, this bias is very clear to me, especially since I do not appear to be from a country in the Middle East. When I am alone with my friends, I am treated as an everyday American, not even given a second glance. However, when I am with my dad or any of my aunts and uncles, we are constantly given wary looks, as if we might be hiding something. Anti-bias education is important for young children because children begin to recognize differences early on in life. (Derman-Sparks) My current understanding of anti-bias education for young children is to teach the children how to accept diversity and respect the differences between each other. I believe an anti-bias education provides the children with the opportunity to gain a sense of self along with feeling reassurance with other differences.
