In Tom Sawyer Muff Potter and Injun Joe have similarities and many differences. Injun Joe and Muff Potter were both grave robbers for Doc Robinson, but Injun Joe killed Doc because his dad would let Joe into his restaurant. Then Joe blamed it on Muff Potter. Muff Potter and Injun Joe are very different and similar. Muff Potter and Injun Joe are very different. For example even though Muff is always drunk he would never even hurt a fly also Injun Joe is much smarter. “Crash! Quick as lightning Injun Joe sprang for a window”. This quote shows that Joe is a coward, instead of taking the blame and admitting he did a bad thing he broke out the window. Muff Potter would never do this, because even when he was accused of killing Doc Robinson he
In the novel The adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain chapter 28 Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer go exploring in the alley. When they get to the alley Tom goes in, Huck thinks that it feels like he has been in the alley for days. All of the sudden Tom goes sprinting out of the alley and yells, “ RUN FOR YOUR LIFE! Without questions the two ran to the old deserted slaughterhouse. There at the slaughterhouse Tom explained what he saw. He saw the drunk Injun Joe in the alley with the treasure. When Tom was running away he stepped on Injun Joe's hand because he was lying asleep on the floor, drunk. Tom grabbed a towel and ran with Huck to the slaughterhouse.
Tom Sawyer, the main character of Mark Twain’s classic, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, is compared to Arnie, a character from the short story,
Tom loves to make every plan more complex like when he was trying to save Jim, a slave. He wants to dig a tunnel all the way to Jim, which is absolutely insane. Then, Sawyer wants to add snakes and different creatures to Jim’s room to make it like a real prison. This is also insane. Tom just wants to add more fun to his own adventure not caring if it troubles others. Tom says “It’s as simple as tit-tat-toe, three-in-a-row, and as easy as playing hooky. I should hope we can find a way that’s a little more complicated than that, Huck Finn” (Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, 212). He even knew Jim was a free man. However, Huck is a realistic person. Huck wants to get Jim out as fast and effectively as possible. His plan was to just steal a key and leave with Jim. Huck does this because he views Jim as a close friend, not just a piece of property. Jim also loves Huck like he is own family. Cassander Smith says, “Jim's actions, though, register more than a concern for his own self-interest. He also exhibits protectiveness for Huck's childish sensibilities” (Smith). Mark Twain makes them similar, by being adventurous, but in different ways. By doing this, he once again creates another unique and memorable trait for Tom and Huck. The audience really gets to feel them personally because they can relate to Tom and Huck’s minds. In conclusion, Tom has an overwhelming imagination while Huck is a realistic
Injun Joe is vicious and dangerous and crazy and malevolent. In the book it says he is a “murderin’ half breed” (66). This man will not be stopped unless by a cell in solitary confinement. Injun Joe is known for holding grudges like when he says on page 67, “I swore I’d get even with you even if it takes a hundred years”. As soon as someone as far as lifts or points a finger at him he will not be stopped until they are eliminated and cannot be a threat anymore. He will continuously try to keep his promises to get back at someone just like satan himself. There are only two options to deal with him and that is to either put Injun Joe behind bars or to even send him to the gallows. But Injun Joe can only be taken care of if Tom tells the sheriff of what he saw to capture this crazed
Tom Sawyer from “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” and José from “Born Worker” share few values. Tom is more of a trickster who wants to get out of working so he tricks people into doing it for him. José on the other hand is a born worker. The two charters have a couple similarities, but their differences set them apart.
In both novels, the main characters were very curious in their own separate ways. Guy Montag was very curious about what was in the books. Even though he was a firefighter and had to burn books for a living, he was still curious about what was in them. Captain Beatty called this “the itch” in a firefighters life. The itch is when the firefighter is curious about what the books say and about thinking. Him being so curious led to his house burning down in the end. On the other hand, Tom Sawyer was curious about a bunch of different things. This was the main reason that he got into so much trouble throughout the story. He would be curious about what might happen if he stole the jam or wandered off into the cave. Also, he wanted to know what it would be like to become a pirate, which he eventually did in the novel. Both main characters wanted to be different from the rest of society in the books. Tom didn’t want to be as society viewed the kids, he wanted to be different. He ran away for a period of time to become a pirate. This was viewed as “weird” in that society. Tom would also constantly get into trouble, causing him to be viewed as abnormal in his community. Guy Montag was viewed as different from what the society viewed a fireman should be. A firefighter in that time was supposed to set fires on books and never wonder what was inside of them. Guy Montag was
One reason Tom and Huck should tell the Sheriff what they saw is because Injun Joe needs to be punished. He murdered someone, and framed an innocent man. Everyone else in town believes it was Muff Potter, and now he is in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. And when or if he ever gets out, his life will be ruined. He will be seen as a murderer for the rest
In Mark Twain’s adventure novel the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn two of his most famous characters, Huck and Tom showcase to vary different forms of reasoning. The two digress in the way they interpret, relate, and react to humanity. Huck and Tom are polar opposites in the manner that they understand the world around them. For instance, Tom believes in complexity.
In the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn went to a cemetery with a dead cat in hopes to cure their warts. While in the cemetery, they see Joe, Dr. Robinson, and Muff Potter robbing graves. The three guys got into an argument and Dr. Robinson knocked out Muff Potter, to then have Joe stab and kill him. After, Joe put the knife into Potter’s hand and woke him up and told him that he had killed Dr. Robinson. Joe was questioned by the police and said that Potter was the killer and Potter was sent to jail. After Tom and Huck witnessed the murder, they ran to a nearby barn and made a blood oath to never tell a soul and if they do, that they drop dead and rot in their tracks. Tom has been having some nightmares and was wondering if he should tell or not. Tom should tell to police. If he does it would put justice to the whole situation. Also, it would stop Joe from hurting anyone else in the future. And finally, Joe would not hurt them for telling like they think he would.
All in all, Jay and Tom are both majorly different character fighting for the same girl. The only similarity they share were being very wealthy men. Jay showed a lot more love for Daisy and Tom was a spoiled rich person who wanted everything. Each of these character traits led to a tragic end, Jay’s death.
The only thing that distinguishes the two characters is that Tom’s motives were based off of the adventure books he’s read, whereas Huck has more common sense because all of his motives are based on experience and not fiction. Tom’s common sense is compared to Huck’s in chapter 3 of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn when Tom claims that (he fought a pack of Spaniards and A-rabs) “[Huck says], But there warn’t no Spaniards and A-rabs, and there warn’t no camels nor no elephants. It warn’t anything but a Sunday- school picnic...” (Twain 13) “So then I judged that all that stuff was one of Tom Sawyer’s lies. I reckoned he believed in the A-rabs and elephants, but for me I think different”(Twain 14).
Tom is talking to Huckleberry Finn about wanting to get Muff Potter out of jail. Also in the story it states, “The boys did as they had aften done and before- went to the cell grating and gave Potter some tobacco and matches. Tom is still young, but he has a good hear. He may get into some trouble but he does not mean to be rotten.
Tom throughout the story displays many characteristics including the previously discussed, but the most noticeable and important is his adventurous nature. Toms sense of adventure is what drives the story forward more times to count. The audience gets the first taste of Tom's adventurous nature is when Tom accompanies Huck to the graveyard where they encounter the villain of the novel, Injun Joe, killing a man. This demonstrates that Tom's adventures also are the cause for most of the novels conflicts, even if he doesn’t see it. Another adventure, or misadventure, is the trip to the island that Huck, Tom, and Joe take to be “pretend” pirates. This is where Tom, demonstrates his wide imagination (and, as previously
