On May 10, 2014 entrepreneur and philanthropist Sean Combs delivered the 146th Commencement address at Howard University, Mr. Combs received an honorary doctorate in humanities at the convocation. Mr. Combs’ address can be used as an example in order for students in the principles of speech class to observe and analyze a speech utilizing the concepts of human communication that we have learnt so far as follows. Mr. Combs’ used the opportunity of giving the commencement speech to share his experiences, values and advice with the graduating class of 2014 and as well as to motivate them. He continuously addressed the audience asking them if they knew how powerful they were. He also alluded to experiences from his life when he did not give up even though he was in a bad place in order to convince the listeners never to give up when they encounter difficult situations. Mr. Combs’ also urged the listeners to stay true to themselves so they can become the next big mogul or build the next big legacy instead of attempting be like moguls who already exist or build legacies to similar to those in place. The main goal of Mr. Combs’ speech was not only to empower his audience, but to also get them to appreciate how powerful they already are because of their achievements. Mr. Comb’s organized his speech chronologically. The beginning of the speech included stories of his first experiences at Howard particularly his first day, in the middle of the speech he spoke about how he left Howard
Have you ever watched football? Well then you know who Carson Wentz is. He is the quarter back for the Philadelphia Eagles and if you ever watched football then you who he is. Today, I’m going to be speaking about who Carson Wentz is, how he became a football player, and how did his interest in football start.
The tone of the speech is very polite and uplifting. Quindlen positively encourages the graduates to follow their own path by being who they are. Her viewpoint towards education, commencement, and life are well received as she reflects on her previous college years and how alike she was with the current graduates. Quindlen shows that she respects the aspects of today’s society through her tone of
A convocation is a special gathering of a group of individuals formally assembled for a special purpose. North Carolina A&T’s Fall Convocation was an assembling for academic and athletic recognition that brought great encouragement. The great speaker gave vital information regarding tactics to push toward success for students and teachers. Dr. Anthony Graham’s great motto, “Keep your hand in the plow, hold on,” is very impactful and has great meaning, encouraging you to reach your set goals.
The characters in a farce place are described as being too exaggerated, extravagant and improbable. Inspector Truscott is presented to the audience as being flamboyant, inquisitive and sneaky as he investigates a bank robbery. However, inspector Truscott is also viewed as being too overbearing and disturbing due to his belief in violence and his actions as he is brutal and shamelessly abusive to Hal. In Act One, after inquiring Hal about the stolen money and Hal replying that “it was half way up the aisle of the church”, the audience then sees inspector Truscott assaulting Hal to get the truth out of him. In Farce comedy, the audience is aware that it characterized by physical humor and the use of absurdity, however inspector Truscott engaging in threating Hal; “I’ll kick those teeth through the back of your head”, and beating him, especially considering that he is just a boy, is too disturbing for the audience and conflicting with the aims of comedy which sought to entertain and not put the audience in a state of fear. Both audience, modern and contemporary, would agree that inspector Truscott engaging in actions like that are against fundamental human rights and courts jurisdiction which states ‘innocent till proven guilty’, which makes him too disturbing a character to fit comfortably within a comic world. Also, inspector Truscott’s language also contributes to him being disturbing as a character in Loot. In Act one, inspector Truscott states to Hal “I’ll hose you down!
Peter Rosnick is a professor at Mount Holyoke College. He did not say who he was voting for, but he did give a detailed explanation of who he would like to be president. He stated that he is voting for someone who does not think that women should be objectified. He also encouraged people to vote for someone who respects the fact that immigrants built this country.
A highly influencing person that visited to our school was Bobby Jones. He came to share his story with us on October 23. Bobby Jones grew up in Yankton, South Dakota, with his parents, his brother, and his sister. Bobby came to persuade our students about staying on track and not to go down the wrong paths in life. A powerful message was delivered that day. He had a very specific goal, which was to tell us his story and give us more of an insight to stay focused on life. Bobby Jones had great information for everyone and I will always remember this presentation. He had a unique way of getting the audience’s attention. Frequently, he would do clapping exercises with the audience, which was very fitting due to the audience members who attended. There were middle school students at this speech as well as high school students. In that aspect, I feel as if he did a great job adapting to his audience.
Famous actors, musicians, politicians, artists and authors are often called upon to deliver commencement addresses at prestigious places of higher learning. It doesn't take Nobel-Prize-winning social scientists or psychologists, or speech professors to predict what these elite guest speakers will say on such occasions such as these. The speaker will tell the graduating class to aim high, never give up, make the most of opportunities, and do as our forbearers did: pull yourselves up by the bootstraps. But when Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks showed up at Vassar College to present the commencement address, his presentation avoided those clichés and platitudes. Hanks was refreshing original and yet remarkably pragmatic. This paper critiques Hanks' themes, examines his rhetorical techniques, and editorially analyzes his purpose.
listening that I have not thought of before. One important thing that Ms. Headlee had said was to not pretend that you’re listening when you actually aren’t. This is called pseudolistening and our book calls it “pretend listening” (Rothwell 150) Pseudolistening is when you are looking at someone while they are talking and responding with ”Mmm-hmm” or even saying “really” (Rothwell 150) It appears as though you are intently listening when in reality you are not. If you are doing this you are not only a bad listener but also disrespectful towards the person who is talking.
Individual rights versus the good of the community, is an issue that America has struggled with for a long time. Mr. Erskine Halls delivered his speech in front of the Association of Newspaper Editors’ conference regarding his concern about the violations of the “First Amendment to the Constitution. To begin with, the “U.S Supreme Court has just issues its ruling in the case of Near v Minnesota” by attempting to void Minnesota’s “press gag law.”
Donovan Livingstons’s Spoken Word Commencement Address at Harvard is short but powerful and proves that to inspire doesn’t need to be long or complicated it just needs to reach you on the level required. The genre that Donovan is speaking in is poetry and is a unique choice for the topic. His audience were the graduates of the 2016 class at Harvard University. He used his chosen genre and knowledge of his audience to manipulate his rhetorical situation to quickly but firmly convey his hopes and inspiration to his fellow graduates.
My vision for the remainder of my Smith journey is to continue to build on the work Dean Mullins and DSAC has put forth to create an inclusive and innovative community. I want every student in Smith to feel the same passion and love that I have for Smith. It is important that we continue to build a community and environment where every student in Smith has the same excitement and enthusiasm at graduation as they did when they were accepted. Smith entrepreneur and my friend David Potter once said, “find your powerful space.” I want to continue to make the Smith school a powerful place for students. A community where students are inspired to think, build, and create fearless ideas. Smith students and alumni have helped me tremendously in accomplishing all that I have, and I want to continue to pay it forward. My vision for my involvement in DSAC is to completely service myself to the Smith community to create value and leave a lasting impact. I know that with my experiences, I can do that on
Eric Thomas is a well know profound motivational speaker. He was a former NFL player that has been through many speed bumps in his road to success. After the NFL he became a pastor, and soon stared giving motivational speeches for people all across the world. He has given a countless number of speeches but his “How Bad Do You Want Success” speech is what brought him great exposer. This speech took place at Michigan State University, intended for a group of college students. He was brought to do a motivational speech on success and how to be successful. The three main points he stressed throughout the speech were having heart, sacrifice, and dealing with pain. Although this speech was attended for the college students at Michigan State University, any person could listen to this speech and find motivation within them. As a current college student I find this speech very inspirational and motivating because I was able to relate to it, he was very passionate and emotional, and he kept it real.
I am finally at the end of my journey and my graduate degree from Walden University is almost in my hand. Walden has asked me to give a speech at the graduation ceremony. When I was asked to do this, I was not sure what I would say. I spent some time thinking about my past year at Walden, and all of the things that I learned. I went from not knowing what to say when I was originally asked to having an abundance of things I could say about Walden. My future is bright thanks to Walden University. Walden University has set very high expectations for their students. I have grown personally as well as professionally, and my academic growth has given me the confidence and the needed skills to pursue leadership positions.
The growth I have experienced while attending Hinds has forever altered my life’s course. When I first came to Hinds I was a sickly dual enrollment student who could not even begin to bear the thought of speaking in front of an audience. A diagnosis of Crohn’s disease turned me from an outgoing and involved high school student into a bedridden recluse. The various programs and clubs on campus combined with my everyday classes allowed me the opportunity to improve not only my public speaking skills, but also my leadership abilities. Hinds gave me an opportunity to return to my original self through education, the Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK).
To begin, Washington is standing upon the stage to provide uplifting words as these students move on to greater things. He uses words such as “dream”, “aspire” and “success” (Washington), to provide motivation for them to become more improved and promising individuals. These words are all encouraging and positive for the purpose of influencing the graduates to pursue a fruitful life and to continue dreaming of more prosperity and goodness. While he is telling his
