You’ve just gotten your college summer job working at the theme park, Joyland. You hear the story of the girl that was murdered there years before, and the murderer was never found. Do you pursue the story or just get your money for college and get back to normal life? Joyland is a crime thriller written by Stephen King. It was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Paperback Original. Joyland will keep you in suspense right until the end. Devin Jones, the new park employee, joins Joyland hoping to make a little extra money to help pay for his college expenses. He would much rather be spending his time with his long time girlfriend Wendy Keegan, but he needs the money. He joins the park staff and immediately makes some new friends, Erin and Tom. They are also college students hoping to make some extra money. He also meets two long-time park employees: Lane Hardy and Fred Dean. Rampage is a 1993 movie about a serial killer whose motive is blood. On a December afternoon, Charles Reece buys a gun and murders three adults in their home. After shooting them to death, Reece mutilates the two women and drinks their blood. A day or two later, Reece kills a woman and her five year old son. After Reece mutilates and drinks the blood of the mother, he takes the child’s body which is later found. When caught by the police, Reece clearly presents signs of mental disturbances as he justifies his killings by saying that the people he killed were out to get him and that he needed blood to live. The main problem in the movie however is whether or not Reece will be found guilty and put to death for his crimes, found guilty and sent to a mental institution, or found not guilty by reason of insanity. Since Reece bought a gun before he killed the first three individuals, and the fact that he knew the mother and child that he killed, the prosecuting attorney tries to prove the Reece is in fact sane and just sick. On the other hand, the defense sheds light on Reece’s past at a mental hospital as well as his detachment from reality. After three more killings and a trial that brings up Reece’s cognitive and mental abilities as well as the premeditation that went into his killings, Reece is found guilty and sent to a mental institution.
Stephen Kings Night Surf was not my favorite reading. The story was too slow for my taste. It started with some teenagers at a beach during a post apocalyptic word where they were immune to a virus called the A2 but little did they know that there was a more deadly virus, the A6 that can infect everyone include teenagers. As the teenagers are at the beach hanging out a man stumbles into them. They decide to sacrifice him to the gods so they can have a free pass from the A6 virus that they believe can also infect them. By the end of the story, on of the characters started showing signs of being infected with the A6 virus. Bernie explains to his girlfriend, Susie, that some of the people that joined the group might have lied
In the film Cruel Intentions, Kathryn Merteuil is portrayed as a manipulative mastermind, who suffers from the addiction of cocaine. She is prideful of herself on destroying the lives of others while having the benefit of meeting her own needs. Kathryn comes from a wealthy family. She portrays herself differently while being in the public eyes; a popular student, a devoted Christian and a student body president at her prestige’s school. She comes off as a lady with moral integrity. However, Sebastian her stepbrother is the only one who sees past Kathryn's deception and in fact knows that she’s a troublemaker. Throughout the film Kathryn seem have been suffering from a borderline personality disorder.
Most people are born with good hearts, but as they grow up they learn prejudices. “Crash” is a movie that brings out bigotry and racial stereotypes. The movie is set in Los Angeles, a city with a cultural mix of every nationality. The story begins when several people are involved in a multi-car accident. Several stories interweave during two days in Los Angeles involving a collection of inter-related characters, a police detective with a drugged out mother and a mischief younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his wife, a racist cop and his younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife, a Persian immigrant father, a Hispanic locksmith and his young
Stephan King is easily one of the most well-known writers in the horror genre. Often regarded as “The Master of Horror,” King’s impact on the horror genre is remarkable, and he has written both books and screenplays. Many of his works have been turned into movies, further increasing his popularity. Most people at least vaguely know who Stephen King is, but not many know his real story. In today’s time Stephen King entrances audiences and his classic books are converted into screenplays for movies.
The red headed girl in the green dress is the first thing one notice seeing the cover of Stephen King’s book, Joyland. One may even assume the book is about the girl and her horrifying experience at an amusement park, based on her posture, her facial expression and her background. The girl
Gallows Hill features a 17- year old young lady named Sarah, who has become unplugged from her friends, and family. Sarah was a senior in high school when she relocated from her California home, to her new residence in Missouri, after her mother had fallen head over heels with a man, in which she moves in to be with this man. At this point, Sarah is not pleased with her mother's choice to move her abruptly while she’s enjoying her last year of high school. Sarah explores the possibility, and since then she finds a strange connection between her, and a mysterious crystal ball and starts to wonder
“Finding Neverland” is a recently released motion picture starring acclaimed actors Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, and directed by Marc Forster ("Monsters Ball”) Personally, I loved the movie and It was hard to find a critic that gave the movie a negative review, so I stopped trying to find someone to argue with and I came across the king of all critics, Roger Ebert. I usually don't agree with his reviews, so I figured we would clash on this one, but surprisingly we came to agree on many aspects.
Stephen King wrote a very brief essay titled "Why we Crave Horror Movies", in which he explained some of the reasons that people choose to go to horror movies to be entertained. In his essay, King goes on to explain that we as a people need horror movies as a sort of release; to feed the darker elements within all of us without having to sacrifice our humanity (also, civility). King does this by comparing people based on their levels of sanity whereas some societal "eccentricities" are completely acceptable, while some will get you thrown right into the loony bin. It’s summed up pretty well in this quote:
Film Production of a Thriller The opening sequence of a new thriller, including the titles, aimed at a 15 or 18 certificate audience (approximately two minutes duration). SECTION ONE. We began the ball rolling, by researching into target audiences .
my idea for the narrative of the film would be popular if it was made
Erin Brockovich, a 2000 Jersy Film Production, staring Julia Roberts is based on a true story that involved Pacific Gas and Electric Company using hexavalent chromium or chromium six as a rust inhibitor to prevent corrosion of pistons used in engines. According to the movie, for fourteen years, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company had been dumping water containing chromium six into ponds and covering them over. The ponds were not lined and the chromium based water leaked into the local water supply exposing residents of Hinkley, California to chromium six. Repeated exposure to hexavalent chromium causes chronic headaches, cancer, nose bleeds, bone and organ deterioration, respiratory failure, liver failure, heart failure, bone or organ
This week’s movie was Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick. The movie, shows this one couple (Brooke Adams and Richard Gere) and a child (Linda Manz) finding ways of achieving ultimate success by walking away from the extremely labor intensive environment to a more friendly milieu. A solution they think of being by trying to swindle this rich farmer (Sam Shepard) by pretending that the couple’s relationship was a brother sister relationship. He doesn’t know their false pretenses and marries the female counterpart. In addition, the male counterpart heard that the rich farmer was about to die in a year. However, after a year, he still lives and in turn cause the couple to turn anxious. Succeeding events after the nonexistent death led to further division between them and the gradually liking for the rich guy. Yet, with all of these events he dies because of the male counterpart killing him. Anyways, from this short summary of the movie, the watcher has a chance to view, look, and understand the actress and actors in certain shots and angles. Some of these shots range from the beautiful countryside or the raging inferno both internally and externally of the characters. Days of Heaven by Terrence Malick uses many various shots to help emphasize and prolong the memory of characters or nature into the watcher's eye.
The film I chose to watch and review was a 2011 Norwegian film titled Oslo, August 31st. The film dealt with addiction, relapse and suffering. I chose this film primarily for two reasons: First, it was listed on the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) as a film that explores drug use, suffering and suicide (co-occurring disorders). Secondly, I selected it because it is a Foreign / Norwegian film. I am a huge Art-house and European films fan and was thrilled that film was available on Netflix. The film’s screenplay was written and directed by veteran Norwegian cinematographer Joachim Trier. The film stars Norwegian actor Anders Lies and was filmed entirely in and around Olso.
