Movie Analysis: Ripley

The film was made in 1941 and won best screenplay at the Oscars and was also nominated for best picture, best director, best actor and best cinematography. It was directed by Orsen Welles and its main actors were Joseph Cotten , Dorothy Comingore and Agnes Moorehead. The film has aged incredibly in the last 75 years from its release and has defined film in how good it really was. Citizen Kane changed the way movies are made because it became the starting point for many filmmakers first learning about how films are made and how a director can give a film a particular style. The editing (by Robert Wise) was as innovative as the cinematography by Gregg Toland - add these two talents to the talent of director Orson Welles not knowing how to direct properly and you have stylistic flourishes and a film that still impresses today. It didn't immediately change how movies were made citizen Kane was actually a somewhat forgotten film for several years until it was rediscovered in the late 50s - but it was definitely ground-breaking and many of the techniques used were copied and used by later directors.

What is National Cinema ? A Question proposed by Tom O’Reagan in Australian National Cinema (2005). A film may categorised as a ‘national cinema’ based on a number of factors: the language spoken in the film, the nationalities or dress of the characters, the country that supports the film financially, the setting, music or cultural elements present in the film.

This film has a very adventurous feel to it, which keeps the attention of the audience. I would definitely recommend this movie to my peers and anyone interested in the hunting community because, the movie represents the key skills to become a great hunter such as scouting, tracking, and patients.

After reading the book, and watching the movie, I really enjoyed both. Both, the book and the movie, included the scene in which Kevin and Max returned the purse to Loretta Lee. Returning the purse proved that Max was not like his dad, he had the heart of his mother. Another similarity was that when Max came home in the police car after saving Freak, Grim gave Max a cup of coffee because he believed that he was becoming an adult. The final similarity was the way that Max dealt with Freak’s death. His way of getting over the situation was writing in the empty book about Freak the Mighty’s adventures.

Columbus: The Discovery (1992) was a box office failure, mocked and lampooned by the critics as being an unintended comedy and the producer Alexander Salkind was sued for fraud, racketeering and breach of contract. Marlin Brando, the film's only real star, also threatened to sue and remove his name from the project because he objected to the way the Carib Indians were portrayed. Few people saw the movie at the time and it is deservedly forgotten today. Almost nothing about the movie or its portrayal of Christopher Columbus is historically accurate, except perhaps for the appearance of the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. It depicts him as being a typical romantic hero and swashbuckler of the Hollywood type, who was also romantically involved with Queen Isabella, while the real Columbus was manipulative, deceptive, extremely greedy and ambitious, and a harsh colonial ruler guilty of slave labor, genocide and other atrocities. His main concern in later years was collecting the full 10% of the profits that he had been promised, although despite his protests of poverty he died a wealthy man.

The hero’s journey model, (also known as the monomyth), is a pattern of events and characters that appears in most movies, books, tv shows, etc. In this pattern, the hero leaves her/his mundane world, plunges into the unknown, undergoes test and trials, and returns with new knowledge and power. In the movie Citizen Kane, a rich man and a reporter covering the story after his death learns the power and problems with money and greediness. The movie starts with him being given away from his mother, the only truly happy place he would know. A very rich banker “adopts” him, as he has stakes in a mine that was thought to be worthless but turned out to be priceless. “The Mission” is a film that gives a historically accurate depiction of the events that took place in South America around 1750, displaying the jesuit missions and their attempt at expanding missionary ventures in the area. These missions foresaw the Jesuits going to uncharted areas of the jungle inhabited by the Guarani people, demonstrating the significance assimilating the Guarani people meant to the Jesuits. Additionally, the Guarani people were accurately displayed as a self-sustained society where basic components such as: productivity, protection, justice regulations and a form of a leader was evident in the form of their King. Nonetheless, the Guarani were an isolated group of individuals who were secluded to the outside world; their only contact with outside personnelles were slave traders who would put them into forced slavery for personal benefits. Not to mention the “Treaty of Madrid”, which resulted in the social and political disputes between the, Portuguese, Spanish and Catholic community; manifesting in the form of territorial conflicts and misunderstandings amongst the three vigorous societies, where each have a different purpose for the Guarani people.

Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run (1998) is truly a brilliant film. It is very seldom that a film manages to combine the high pace of an action thriller and a deep philosophical subtext without botching it, but Run Lola Run does an excellent job at striking a balance between both. Tackling the very abstract and philosophical concepts of chance and cause-effect, Run Lola Run is truly a modern foreign classic. Tykwer manages to postulate one simple theory through the film, that the simplest of choices can completely change everything. The film is supported by stellar performances from Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtreu as the protagonist Lola and her boyfriend, Manni. The film’s use of cinematography to add to the narrative, clever use of the aspects of mise-en-scene and explosively-paced soundtrack add a whole new dimension to this film. One of the few German films to be both a critical and commercial success, Run Lola Run is a smart and stimulating film, which demands active watching in order to understand fully. I will now analyze the film comprehensively using three main parameters; the mise-en-scene, the cinematography and the sound.

“Hunt for the Wilderpeople” is a superb film set in a modern-day New Zealand, that perfectly portrays the life of a struggling orphan, through an adventure with an unlikely father figure. It is directed by Taika Waititi, the famous New Zealand actor, writer, and director who brings to life the story “Wild pork and watercress” by Barry Crump with an outstanding cast of New Zealand actors who portray these characters excellently. The movie makes you think about how significant event's in a person's life can change the values that they hold and what they believe in.

Citizen Kane represents a long period of time, allowing the characters to age throughout the film. Telling Kane’s life story in flashbacks is a very original approach in captivating the significance of his life. The film starts out by the parents almost abandoning their child, even when he does not want to leave. Kane’s mother did it out of protection from his father because he seemed to be an abusive alcoholic. As the film went on and Kane started to grow, he became very well known for his success in the newspaper business. He would tell the world the truth. The most interesting thing was the flashbacks were told through five different points-of-view. The flashback was given from characters that would mostly be forgotten. The unreliable narrators affect the opinions and accuracy of their interpretations. The camerawork had a very huge impact on the film. The way the actors were captured and how it showed how certain events lead to others. For example, the audience saw how in the beginning of the film Kane was a very happy young child, but as things began to change, the camera isolated Kane and his parents, as they planned to separate Kane from his home. Once they separated Kane from his home, he begun to isolate everything and everyone else who tried to get close to him. Kane’s isolation follows him into his adulthood, where we see his workers celebrating in honor of his success and Kane is not there with them. The way the story was told made the audience question as to why

It is important for friends to have each other’s backs and help each other through hard times. In the film Holes, Andrew Davis teaches us that friends are very important to have. They help each other get through the unexpected challenges of life. The two main characters, Stanley and Zero overcome many challenges in turn, showing us that friends need to stick together.

Citizen Kane is a movie that can be rewritten and implemented into any film created today. In many ways, the storyline tells us more about ourselves than anything else and it relates to each one of us who has ever wished for a better life. From his flamboyant adventures to the blah blah to his political agenda in his later years. Every film that came after Citizen Kane owes a great deal to Orson Welles because of the way he used special effects, music, and shadows and lighting, which without a doubt makes it one of the finest movies ever made. Some even call it the Mona Lisa of its time because Orson Welles was the first to implement all of these techniques, which revolutionize cinema forever.

The use of deep focus also manipulates the viewers perspective. In Citizen Kane, Charles Kane and his wife, Susan Kane, are seen within their mansion. (1:47:17) In the mansion, the viewer is able to see everything within the shot. They can see the massive statues and proportions of the inanimate objects compared to the humans. This scene allows the audience to witness Susan and Charles sitting so far apart within this one room, so much so they have to yell to converse. This both supports Susan’s statement when she says that she is lonesome and it also foreshadows the space that continues to grow between Susan and Charles Kane. This particular scene also supports the idea that Charles Kane was very alone towards the end of his life after Susan had left him. This was because he was only surrounded by the objects around him. All he had left were the materialistic belongings he had bought earlier in his lifetime. In The Social Network, there are also examples of extreme proportion sizes, although not nearly as dramatic as in Citizen Kane. Such as the scene when Mark runs up a set of stairs towards a building on the Harvard campus. He runs up very large set of stairs, something that is not commonly seen other than in front of buildings or monuments of importance. The audience can witness the immense pillars behind him. Most of the structures shown in this scene are made of marble, this is also something that is usually seen in places of importance. (6:54) This allows the audience
