Introduction
Motivation is a process of arousing and sustaining goal-directed behavior induced by the expectation of satisfying individual needs. It is the major determinants of our behaviors. By understand the motives, you can influence staff’s behaviors. Especially with the shift towards a more socially and culturally responsive workforce, ability to motivate your staff is becoming one of the most important assets of an organization.

In addition, there will be very major difference on compensation package between local staff and expatriates in terms basic salary standard, academic sponsorship for children, rental reimbursement etc.
To design and determine the motivation plan for each staff, my company encourages involvement of staff him/herself via yearly staff appraisal evaluation system. Every year, manager will conduct annual performance appraisal with subordinates in order to review the job performance for the previous year as well as to set the performance target for the following year. This annual event will be promoted around beginning of Q4 to encourage staff to start the self-assessment before hold the discussion with the direct appraiser. During the evaluation discussion, staff performance will be reviewed and feedback in order for both appraisees and appraisers to understand each other perspectives. It also helps appraisers to understand the real needs of the appraisees in order to lay down the appropriate set of goals and development plan for the staff. This set of key performance indicator becomes the set of essential goals that drive the staff to perform better as well as encourage staff to take accountability and commit on the targets they have agreed with the managers. Motivation is derived from an internal force that provides an individual the opportunity to achieve their needs or goals. People are motivated by a variety of things and often have different motivating factors. Employers should be mindful of individual motivating factors when attempting to motivate staff to increase performance. While some people may be motivated by money, many are motivated by things like: recognition, promotion, and increased responsibility. Once an employer has identified motivating factors they are able to analyze a variety of motivational theories to design and implement a program that will motivate employees to go above and beyond what is expected of them.
Motivation is having a reason or reasons to act/behave in a particular way. It creates “drive” in people whether it is in pursuit of a goal, or the need to complete an activity. It produces enthusiasm and a willingness to achieve in both a work environment and in your personal life. Motivation can be increased and decreased in line with the incentives on offer.
What is motivation? As manager’s, motivation is one of the most vital and crucial assets to possess in managing a business. This drive is a critical tool to use in the work place and determine the success or failure of an organization. Motivation is a driving force that initiates and directs behavior. In other words, motivation is an internal energy that drives an individual to do something in order to achieve a certain goal. Therefore, creating a motivating environment in the workplace will lead to happy employees. Creating a work environment like this, managers can expect low staff turnovers, improved productivity, happy customers, and better financial performance. Therefore, the input of motivation use towards employees determines the output efficiency of the company. However, everyone involved in an organization is motivated differently. Everybody has their own individual needs in regards to motivation. Depending on how motivated a person is, determines the effort that individual puts into the work and therefore, how productive they are.
Generally, motivation is defined as “the intention of achieving a goal, leading to goal-directed behavior which is reflected at the end of a project” (Whittington and Evans, 2005). Motivation therefore is a perceived drive that can be enforced into an employee and can either make the employee achieve or not to achieve the organizational goals and attain personal goals as the end results (Young, 2009).
Employee motivation is the level of energy, commitment, and creativity that an organization’s workers apply to their jobs. The needs, perspectives, and viewpoints of employees are instrumental.
To begin with, Business Dictionary defines Motivation as the “internal and external factor that stimulate desire and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job or to make an effort to attain a goal”. There are different theories of motivation e.g. Maslow’s Theory, Two factor Theory and so on, but my main focus is the Reinforcement Theory.
What is motivation? The Merriam-Webster defines motivation as “a force or an influence that causes someone to do something, as a condition of being eager to act or work” (Merriam-Webster, Inc., 2015). Motivation plays a role in everyone’s daily life. The type of motivation that we are directing our attention to is employee motivation.
Motivation is the process of operating organizational conditions which will impel employees of any emotion or desire operation one’s will and prompting or driving at it to action.
“Motivation refer to a desire, need, or drive that contributes to and explains behavioral changes” (Boundless, 2015). Motivation is either intrinsic, influenced by internal factors, or extrinsic, when it is influenced by external factors. Intrinsic motivated staff perform their roles to satisfy their inner zeal to do things correctly while the extrinsic motivated perform their roles due to the attached benefit such as recognition, increased pay, or reward or to avoid a negative action such as losing their job. To motivate an intrinsically motivated individual, I would seek to know what they need to best do the job, delegate roles and responsibility that will make them feel they contributed to the running of the unit. ‘Motivation’ is derived from the Latin term ‘movere’ that means ‘to move’. Thus, motivation is a process that starts with a physiological or psychological deficiency or need that activates a behaviour or a drive that is aimed at a goal or incentive (Luthans). Broadly speaking, motivation is willingness to exert high levels of efforts towards organizational goals, conditioned by the efforts’ ability to satisfy some individual needs (Robbins). Need means some internal state that make certain outcomes appear attractive. An unsatisfied need creates tension that stimulates drives within the individual. What is motivation? Motivation is defined as “an individual’s willingness to respond to the organization’s requirements in short run.” (P.71 Dixon, 1998) For the purposes of this research paper, I find the most fitting definition of motivation is to define it as “the force that Energizes, Directs, and Sustains behavior.” (uri.com, 2014) Motivation is imperative to productivity. Motivation is defined as an act or process that inspires and stimulates a person to be an effort to achieve a goal. It not only puts employees in act, but also makes them feel interesting with their job. As a result, most of employees are feeling satisfaction with their job, becoming creativity, innovation and productivity as well. However, to successful in motivating the staff is required an appropriate method that meets with all staff’s need. Otherwise, it is seems to useless in driving the employees. Specifically, there are many theories of motivation referred such as the theory of Abraham Maslow (the hierarchy of needs), Frederick Herzberg (the motivation-maintenance model), B.F Skinner (the reinforcement), Victor Vroom (the expectancy), Stacy Adams (the equity), Madeline Hunter (the intrinsic/extrinsic). In personal, I prefer to the theory of intrinsic/extrinsic as the best theory which be applied in order to generate a motivation in the company.

Pinder (1998) defined work motivation as a “set of internal and external forces that initiate work related behaviour and determine its form, direction, intensity and duration.” Motivation plays an important role in a business environment, as employee motivation is believed to improved work performance.
Motivation is defined as the drive within a person to achieve a goal. The challenge that supervisors and employers have is how to help their employees to develop the drive to complete a goal within themselves. Numerous studies and experiments have been done on how best to motivate employees. Theories have developed around the results of these studies, each is tailored to the circumstances of the time, place, and people that participated in the study so they do not apply directly to every situation.
