Speak is a novel by Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak is about how Melinda changes and grows as the school year goes by. In the Novel Speak, the author uses the “Tree” motif to show her emotions and to express herself.. In the beginning of the novel, the motif “Tree” represents why Melinda is acting the way she acts. For example, when the lightning hit the tree, it shows that she is being hurt because the tree represents her emotions. Melinda says “I’ve been painting watercolors of trees that have been hit by lightning. I try to paint them so they are nearly dead, but not totally.” (30-31) This shows that Melinda is hurt at the pep rally because that is where she is painting the trees being hit by lightning.
