For thousands of years God has asked people to share in the work of helping others come to know Him and to live as people of faith. These teachers and leaders have come in different shapes and forms, from various backgrounds, and with many levels of ability. But each has somehow heard the call to teach and thus responded. Moses' leadership journey was by no means straightforward (Ben-Hur & Jonsen, 2012) and he faced numerous leadership issues that would challenge his leadership style. In the end, we can learn a great deal from the influence he had on his followers and take away some great lessons for all aspiring leaders of today.
Moses’ Most Important and Effective Leadership Characteristic
"The very essence of leadership is that you have to have a vision,” (Heathfield, 2016). More important though is the ability to sell that vision. Based on their position, a boss has the power and authority to tell people what to do. “A leader, on the other hand, may have authority based on their position; however, he or she does not have the luxury (depending on how you look at it) of telling people what to do,” (Cleaver, 2012). Simply put, people do not have to do what a leader tells them to do. This means, a leader must persuade people to follow the vision. Moses was tasked by God to convince the Hebrew people to leave Egypt. He told the Israelites that it was time to claim what God had promised Abraham years ago, a land all their own. He made sure the people understood the Promised
Atkinson (2014) believes effective leadership displays, “No person is less divine than another, and therefore no person is less than another” (p. 145). Throughout the bible, there are many people in scripture that God placed in leadership roles. Jesus, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart.
The next question posed to Rene inquired about essential characteristics of a leader. After giving the question some thought she responded by saying that a leader must be able to remain objective and prioritize. “Prioritizing in my job is essential,” Rene stated, “with so many issues to deal with some nights it can be difficult to determine which to tackle first. However, remaining calm and objective in your decision making can help a leader prioritize properly, which can improve patient outcomes.” Additionally, Rene emphasized that the best leaders lead by example. By displaying desired attitudes and behaviors, a nursing leader may inspire their staff to act in a similar manner. Another area Rene stressed when posed this question was a leader’s ability to support learning. She went on to state that “it is necessary to focus on learning, not chastising. Placing the blame on someone rather than stepping back and looking at the details of a problem, deters the team from achieving the overall goal. Incident reports remain vital to the process of learning.” Rene continued to emphasis that by filling out incident reports individuals can analyze a situation or process and determine where the flaws or errors remain present. Without incident reports and learning from mistakes, growth remains difficult. Diana S. Contino (2011), author of “Leadership Competencies: Knowledge, Skills, and Aptitudes Nurses Need to Lead Organizations Effectively,” believes that organizational and
"There is a difference between being a leader and being a boss. Both are based on authority. A boss demands blind obedience; a leader earns his authority through understanding and trust." Klaus Balkenhol
When I think about leadership, Matthew 26:36-45 always comes to my mind. In this passage, Jesus unpacked the roles and responsibilities of a true leader. A true leader leads by sample without looking back. The scripture states, “…My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Going a little further, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed…. Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping.
In fact, a true servant leader should also be a spiritual leader” (Lynch & Friedman, 2013, p. 87). A servant leader is one who possesses the power and knowledge to lead a group of people. A servant leader is often also a spiritual leader, with Moses standing out as a notable example. Like Moses, spiritual leaders focus on fulfilling the needs of his or her society. Moses had personal motivation for leadership that enabled him to become a power full leader for his people.
Moses empowered Joshua and gave him authority. To be a successful leader in the modern business world, you have to decide when it is the appropriate time for your successor to receive a bite of the pie. If you wait to long and they are thrown straight into the fire, success may not be achieved and your legacy and or reputation may be damaged. If you share the load with your successor, they can better understand the qualities and actions needed to be successful.
Many things can make or break a leader. Whether it's your mom, dad, teacher, or coach, they all share similar qualities that make us classify them as leaders in the first place. Leaders, such as Odysseus, can be confident and brave, but having a brain poisoned with selfishness and taking advantage of your followers can alter people's opinions on them. Leadership is not controlling, but it is helping people achieve a goal as a whole.
There are many different qualities when it comes to leadership. Everyone has a different idea of a true leader, and sometimes leaders are naturally selected without a choice. In the world today society puts a huge amount of pressure on their leaders, and people who possess major power are always living on the edge of danger because if they make a wrong decision they will face major consequences. In William Golding’s book Lord of the Flies the leaders must decide between what is right and what is wrong. Because their are no adults with the children on the island, they start to establish rules and customs like adults would. Jack and Ralph, the two main characters, are both willing and able to lead the tribe, but their beliefs on leadership
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
Leadership can be rewarding in ministry as well as business if it is done in a biblical manner. Leadership can and will be challenging God does not tell us that doing things His way will be easy. Jesus tells us that following Him can and will come with persecution in 2 Timothy 3:12, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted (English Standard Version).” Although we may be persecuted for living a godly life this is what we are called to do in ministry, business and home. When we are in a leadership position it is imperative that we lead a godly life because we are an influence on those we are leading. There are many challenges in leadership and we do not always put them in a
“There is much that can be learned about leadership from Scripture” (Smith, 1992, p. 39). The Bible provides us with what God not only desires His man of God to be, but requires His under shepherd to meet His character traits.
There are many people in scripture that God has placed in leadership roles. Jesus himself, David, Moses, Paul, Peter, Abraham and many others are some of those leaders. There are core attributes discussed in the lecture that personally reflect my opinion of what an effective leader of Christ needs such as, a shared vision, model of the way, empowerment of others, challenge of the process, and encouragement of the heart. Leaders establish a model of the way others should be treated and how goals should be pursued, with standards and examples of what others should follow by exemplifying God’s example. Christian leaders inspire a shared vision to make a difference
Psalms 23:1-3, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.” (NKGV) In this scripture, God views himself as the leader of the sheep and guides them. God shows how a biblical leader should be envisioned. Biblical leaders are chosen by God to lead others through their Christian influence to guide them down the right paths. What is biblical leadership? According to Todd Engstrom, “Biblical leadership is meeting someone where they are, and taking them where Jesus wants to go.” Biblical leadership is therefore intensely personal and at the same time intensely biblical. The definition provides a basic foundation for leadership, but also expands to a more biblical meaning. Leadership is not about position, authority, or who knows the most information but more so about one life influencing another. A good leader seeks leadership from God, Proverbs 16:1 “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.”
The New Testament leaders are an example of how church leaders of today should also behave and work[8]. They ought to be able to teach, guide the believers in the way of God and nurture their spiritual gifts. The New Testament leaders had to boldly defend the word of God in case of any false teaching. Basing on this New Testament leadership, it is important to make sure that any believer appointed to the leadership office has the laid down qualifications[9].
The leader’s job is to overcome resistance and make things flow in a different direction. His or her job is to create a different reality.” (Hyatt, 2010) Leadership has been around since the beginning of time. There has always been a leader of some sort, ensuring a group is heading in the right direction.
