For this Coming of Age unit, I read Monument 14 by Emmy Laybourne. It is set in a dystopian world with several students, ranging from high school to elementary being trapped, injured, in a superstore as the world around them collapses into chaos. As everything around them goes from bad to worse they realize who they can trust, what really happened, how one’s actions can have disastrous consequences, and why you should never give up. The only thing they know is that they need each other and they need to take every precaution. So, will this group beat the odds and survive without any gadgets or devices, communication, help, or will they fail and lose everything? There are several things that you could consider to be the theme, because this book has so much happening in it. One of the themes, I thought fit the book the best, is that while you need down-time you also need structure to thrive. This is evident when at first the kids went a little crazy; no adult(s), no hope, no gadgets and seemingly nothing to live for. Two turned to drinking and drugs, the young kids fight constantly, one girl disappears and the others are at a lost, until everyone is forced to be responsible by realizing that help isn’t coming. After accepting responsibility those students start to thrive and actually kind of enjoy the time they spent together. …show more content…
Your mother hollers that you’re going to miss the bus… You don’t stop and hug her and tell her that you love her. You don’t thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not--you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the
The theme of this book is to be strong through the toughest times. This theme is shown throughout the book when Kira is the only one alive in her family, Anabella passes away, and even when Matt was lost. Another theme could be trust your instincts. Kira has all these thoughts about the council, Annabella, beasts and many more but she keeps them to herself. Day after day more thoughts pile up. If Kira were to trust herself, her life would have a greater quality. As you read more of the story the theme becomes a larger part of
As the book Monument 14 progresses, a lot of themes reveal themselves. They include the theme of survival, coming of age, and also some hidden themes of wanting to belong and fitting in. This story follows Dean as a freak hailstorm causes his school bus to break down. Some of his classmates and younger students find refuge in a local store. The theme of survival can be seen from the very beginning of the book once hail starts falling on the bus that Dean and the other students were riding in. This theme isn’t very relevant in my life because I haven’t been in a life or death situation where I needed to think fast and react in order to survive. The next theme that arises is the coming of age, not only in Dean, but in the rest of the older kids including Jake, Niko, Astrid, Brayden, and Josie.
The theme of this book is bravery. All through the book both Seth and Kendra had to show extreme amounts of bravery. Fighting, rescuing, and not holding back are the things they showed the most bravery for. They both did what had to be done and succeeded. With other smaller themes like chaos, trickery, and patient’s bravery stood out to me the
One event that happened in this book that proves that the theme is true is when people who are sober came to rehab and talked to the kids and told them that things will get better and that it will get easier to go without the things they are addicted to. These people who use to be addicts who are now sober make a huge impact on the kids, showing them that that could be them someday. Another event that happens in the book that shows the key theme is when Eva and her Dad work out their problems during family day. After Eva's mom died, her and her dad stopped talking. Eva felt like she was invisible to her dad and felt like she didn’t even have a father. When Eva was doing drugs she was always hoping that her dad would pay attention to her and catch her, but he didn’t for about a year. When her dad did find out that she was an addict it didn't make anything better, it just made things worse. Now her dad was ashamed of his daughter. The daughter that he hadn’t payed attention to for the past year. When there was family day at rehab Eva and her dad got to share their real feelings with each other and work all of their problems out, resulting in forgiving each other and acknowledging that they both are still mourning of their mother/wife's death and will now help each other with the pain. The final event that happened in Clean that showed the theme that bad times get better is that by the end of the
There was many different themes in these stories, from friendship or independence, to perseverance or redemption. One theme that stuck with me, and could be found in a few of the stories we read, was the theme of shame. Shame can be found in a character’s actions and thoughts. There are many ways in which shame can be depicted, but I saw the overall theme in three of the stories we read in class.
These theme for my book are very good themes about the book. The themes help the reader know what the book is about. The characters in the book are important to the book because with out the characters the book would make no sense. Every book must have characters and themes to the book because without those two things there is no book. The three theme from the book talk very good about the book. They describe what Brian has to go through in order to survive the cold winter in the canadian wilderness. One theme tells us how lonely it is in the wilderness and how lonely Brian is and how he has no one to talk to but a skunk. So those are some of my theme and characters of my story brian’s winter.
In my opinion the theme of this story is things are not always as they appear. I believe that things are not always as they appear is the theme because in the story it states that Ponyboy is a greaser who likes sunsets and school. The theme of this story, things are not always as they appear is shown through the main character Ponyboy because Ponyboy is a greaser who like things like school,
Two Themes- The first theme in my book trailer is, “Losing someone close to you can be hard.” As humans, we all struggle when we lose someone or something we love. It takes us awhile to move on but each and every day it ends up being a little better. Oakley went through this in my book she lost her brother which was also her best friend. For Oakley, it took her a long time to move on and be happy again. The second theme in my book trailer is, “ The love for your family helps you.” When you go through hard times your
A theme that stood out to me is family. Sixteen year-old Chanda, has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders and has struggles which are similar to the large number
The theme of this chapter is fitting/belonging in. An example of this is when she says “The canteen! Even the name sounds special.” This shows that she is jealous of these people on how they get to stay and she doesn’t, but her house isn’t far away. This is where she thinks all the special kids eat. Another example is when she says one day she would ask her mom to make her a sandwich and write her a note so she could be one those kids that gets to stay in the canteen.
The theme is the subject of the essay and it helps the reader to get the full understanding about the message or a big idea. “School of Hate” by Sabrina Rubin Erdely and “18 Tigers, 17 Lions, 8 Bears, 3 Cougars, 2 Wolves, 1 Baboon, 1 Macaque, and 1 Man Dead in Ohio” by Chris Heath have one similar theme and it is isolation because they both experienced as the outcasts and it was hard for them to getting along with the society. Erdely developed the theme by showing the experiences of a girl in the middle school. The author made the
I believe that the theme of my book is that every team will never always agree on something and have their ups and downs but they are still a team. One reason why I believe this is the theme is because at first Adam,Perk,Ray,Dutch, and Pearl had some concerns about the plan they were going to use. Another reason is that when they were
To begin with, one major theme that continuously played a part throughout the entire book is desire. To many of the characters, it was the one urge that they could never overcome. One
At the beginning of the book, there is a part that starts the story and how it affects them later in their lives. When Raina races against her friends to go home, she trips and knocks out her two front teeth. This shows me the theme of how all things, and even things that are meant to be fun or enjoyable may have some weird/terrible consequences. It also shows us how the relationship between her and her friends in another scene in the beginning of the story is that I saw for the theme friendship was when Raina came back to school the day after her teeth were knocked out and people were wondering how was her and if she was okay. Then more people come over and then they ask her if she saw the blood and how much blood there was and if Raina cried. This shows that her friends do not care for her as much and would rather hear Raina’s story from a different side than her own. A theme that seems great for the both scenes that work together is most people
The theme is be free and live joyfully because the boy from " From Boy's Life" couldn't wait to leave the school and he was very excited for Summer and no school. The animal from the story " Emancipation: A Life Fable" didn't know what was going on, but when he was released he was very happy because he lived in a cage for most of his life.
