WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GMOs?
It has been no secret that one of the biggest contributors to GMO crops is Monsanto. This is the same company responsible for Saccharin, Aspartame, DDT, Agent Orange, Bovine Growth Hormone and Glyphosate. In addition, they are also responsible for PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls that were used for coolant fluids for electrical transformers, capacitors, and electric motors). This eventually led to Monsanto paying out over $600 million in 2003 to residents of Anniston, Alabama, who experienced severe health problems, including liver disease, neurological disorders and cancer after being exposed to PCBs.

“According to a 2008 analysis by the United nations, Monsanto only accounts for thirty percent of seed market globally” (Gregory 765) Unlike the United States government who works cooperatively with GMO industry, the European approach has a suspicion of science and mistrust of both government and industry. Many other countries have done their own analysis and research and have found unequivocally that GMO seeds show signs of high toxicity, which offer serious side effects and negative health effects on consumers.
Several of the companies that have been responsible for GMO crops and their negative effects on consumers have created the website gmoanswers.com in an effort to appear responsible by offering information about the good they believe GMOs crops offer to society. The website is funded by members of the Council for Biotechnology Information which includes BASF, Bayer Crop Science, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto Company and Syngenta.
