WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR GMOs?
It has been no secret that one of the biggest contributors to GMO crops is Monsanto. This is the same company responsible for Saccharin, Aspartame, DDT, Agent Orange, Bovine Growth Hormone and Glyphosate. In addition, they are also responsible for PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls that were used for coolant fluids for electrical transformers, capacitors, and electric motors). This eventually led to Monsanto paying out over $600 million in 2003 to residents of Anniston, Alabama, who experienced severe health problems, including liver disease, neurological disorders and cancer after being exposed to PCBs.
Monsanto’s history and lack of accountability is long. For instance, in 1996, Monsanto began its widespread sales of

“According to a 2008 analysis by the United nations, Monsanto only accounts for thirty percent of seed market globally” (Gregory 765) Unlike the United States government who works cooperatively with GMO industry, the European approach has a suspicion of science and mistrust of both government and industry. (Gregory 765)
Many other countries have done their own analysis and research and have found unequivocally that GMO seeds show signs of high toxicity, which offer serious side effects and negative health effects on consumers.
Several of the companies that have been responsible for GMO crops and their negative effects on consumers have created the website gmoanswers.com in an effort to appear responsible by offering information about the good they believe GMOs crops offer to society. The website is funded by members of the Council for Biotechnology Information which includes BASF, Bayer Crop Science, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont, Monsanto Company and Syngenta. What is most interesting is their claim to being dedicated to the responsible development and application of plant
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
The article contains necessary information to support why GMOs are more beneficial than harmful. The author believes that, “consumers should weigh the positives with the negatives and embrace this innovative process.” In the article, the author provides information about GMOs to be concerned about but successfully gives
Monsanto positions itself as a relatively new agricultural company having formed in 2002, and focused on supporting local farmers around the world. They also promote themselves as a guardian of the environment with a mission “to produce more food while conserving more” (Monsanto.com). Today’s Monsanto conglomerate also promotes itself as the “New Merchants,” a leading research company in the field of agriculture-crop production, as well as a strong supporter of public and private research through its grant, donations and University scholarship programs.
There is a constant struggle for the GMO which has increased over recent times. The agriculture market always needs a new genetically modified seed which has created a large customer base for the Monsanto Company. However, simultaneously there are low yield cycles that make it difficult for both the consumer and the company as a whole. Since the seeds are genetically modified, environmentalists are against these seeds and have cause for question about the affects these seeds have on the consumer’s overall health. Additionally, the general public, especially the consumers, are concerned about the seeds which are being sold to them and even the food purchased from the local grocery. Since the seeds are modified genetically consumers are worrying about the effects this may have on their health not only short-run but long-term. Furthermore, these types of accusations are continually causing problems
Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMO’s, are organisms that have had genes from a different organism implanted into their own genetic code in order to produce a new result (“Genetically engineered foods”). This practice has elicited polar responses across the globe, for a multitude of reasons. Besides the obvious reason, being the morality of changing an organism's DNA for human benefit, one frequently noted problem is the monopolization of GMO’s by the company Monsanto, whose name is nearly synonymous with GMO’s due to their involvement with these crops. Monsanto has been at the center of many controversies regarding GMO’s, and is even considered to be ranked third to last for reputation among all major American companies (Bennett). Most
You may not have heard about Monsanto but you’ve probably eaten genetically modified foods. What do the two have in common and how are they killing us? Here are some hard facts. Monsanto is an international agriculture company whose history dates back to the early 20th century. They began by creating the artificial sweetener saccharin. Later they moved on to carcinogenic chemicals like Agent Orange, used by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. After receiving numerous environmental violations and lawsuits, today Monsanto is involved in biotechnology and the agriculture business. Monsanto suggests that they help farmers grow bigger crops, faster, while using fewer resources. But what they leave out is how they
In this research paper the researchers try to demonstrate that Monsanto is falsely accused of being evil, however, in reality, does a lot of good things. The companies market power is the most intimidating aspect of the company. Works
Meanwhile, a growing body of evidence connects GMOs with health problems, environmental damage and violation of farmers’ and consumers’ rights.
“Monsanto Company started off its chemical business in 1997, Monsanto traces its roots to John Francisco Queeny, a purchaser for a wholesale drug house, who formed the Monsanto Chemical Works in St. Louis, Missouri”(Barboza). In the mid-1990s, it became the first to widely market genetically engineered

The Earth Justice Organization explains the disasters of having GMOs in the environment, consumers and farmers do not want Monsanto to control their diet and are unwillingly force. This is a multinational, biochemical and biotechnological company whose headquarters are in St. Louis, Missouri. It’s a company that deals with vast research, and development of GMO products. Monsanto’s current operation of attaining biological rights is considered as a very big threat to the farmers who have majorly developed similar products. The main controversy is the fact that in the year 2014, Monsanto made a net sale of $10.75 billion dollars which included cotton, soybean, vegetables, seeds and fruits (Young, 2011).
In her online video, "Talking about food safety," Monsanto 's lead toxicologist, Shawna Lemke says that, "In recent years people have become increasingly interested in where their food comes from, and how it is produced....there is still conflicting and confusing information about Genetically Modified Foods, but because of the intense work the scientists that work here do, we all feel confident in feeding them to our kids." Monsanto is a Fortune 500 "sustainable agricultural" company that started in 1901, introducing their first product, saccharin. They move on to produce agricultural chemicals in 1945, and by 1982 they were genetically modifying plant cells (DNA). They now have 404 facilities in sixty-six countries, and supply 76% of the world 's seeds. It seems Monsanto has a stronghold on the world 's genetically modified seeds. Although Monsanto claims that genetically modified food is safe, there are conflicting studies claiming they are unsafe and cause harm to humans, plants and animals. However, there have not been any scientific research done concerning this in the United States. How would these studies affect our supply of genetically modified food here in The United States? What about the farmers? How does this stronghold affect the farmers here in the United States? The United States Government needs to perform their own scientific research studies to assess the health risks of Genetically Modified Food, and
The objective of this report is to analyze the differences in Monsanto’s experiences in the United States and Europe and the reasons of opposition in Europe, despite that, why Monsanto pushed ahead so hard.
Monsanto is a company that some people may not be explicitly familiar with on a first name basis. However, the work that the company has done over the last century, with a larger emphasis on its most recent ventures, have been deeply engrained in our lives, our food, and our economy. Monsanto has those who advocate on their behalf in addition to their naysayers. While Monsanto has made huge strides in terms of biotechnology over the last couple of decades, their accomplishments, and the relevant methods, have not been free of criticism and controversy. In order to analyze Monsanto’s corporate environment, it is important to first explore their Strengths, Weaknesses,
