On Mondays, Monica Wehby takes a break from campaigning to revisit her recent work routine: brain surgery. Wehby, a Portland pediatric neurosurgeon challenges Democratic incumbent Sen. Jeff Merkley for Oregon’s junior seat in the U.S. Senate. If she wins, Wehby will be Oregon’s second women in the Senate in nearly 50 years. But playing in a field dominated by men is familiar ground for Wehby. After graduating top of her class from Baylor College of Medicine in Texas she continued to be the first woman to enroll and graduate from UCLA’s neurosurgery program. Of the more than 30 doctors running for Congress this upcoming election, Wehby is among the few female physician-candidates. Obamacare, Wehby’s campaign issue of choice, has commanded her imagge she decided to run last fall. Her campaign slogan, “Keep your doctor, change your Senator” has kept the interest of Oregonians, according to recent polls, who have …show more content…
9, Wehby’s campaign took a pivot after releasing an ad disclosing her support of gay marriage. Oregon’s gay rights poster child Ben West endorsed Wehby in the ad declaring that “she’ll fight for every Oregon family, including mine.” West and his now husband were one of four couples who sued the state of Oregon for violating their rights to marry. The three other couples endorsed Merkley hours after the ad launched. Wehby is the first Republican candidate to include a gay family in a political ad in history. Wehby has joined the Republican movement toward combatting Democrats on their issues territory. While she was critized about her views during the primary, her liberal leaning support of social issues has maintained her success in the polls. Among her beliefs of gay marriage, Wehby has been outspoken about her support of over-the-counter birth control, abortion, and helping immigrants achieve legal
You’d be hard pressed to find one in a crowd. The average serial killer generally blends in with everyone else (Directory Journal, 2010). In fact, most are soft-spoken and even polite. Their monstrous nature only comes through when you dig deeper into their personalities, actions, and habits. Most seem to have come from dysfunctional family settings and were emotionally, sexually, or even verbally abused as children (Directory Journal, 2010). It is almost as if this background activates some psychological trigger that increases their feelings of inadequacy or worthlessness that led them to seek out their own heinous form of release.
Yvette Diane Clarke is a democratic member of the U.s House of Representatives from NYC district 9. Born on November 21, 1964 to 2 Jamaican immigrant's , Clarke has lived her whole life in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Her mother Una Clarke was a member of the city council from 1991-2001. Before entering Congress in 2007, Clarke was a member of the New York City council as well. She graduated right down the block from my house at Edward R Murrow High School & earned a scholarship to Oberlin College in Ohio, which she attended from 1982-1986. At a later time, she had then enrolled at Medgar Edwards but did not graduate. At one point , she was an intern for congressman Major Owens.
For the fourth assignment, I am focusing on a conservative candidate in the 2016 election. Claudia Tenney is a Republican candidate for the House of Representatives elected from New York states’ 22nd congressional district. She was elected to fill the position in November 2016 wining over a democratic female candidate. She had one of the most expensive races in the nation in the position receiving 46.5% of the vote. In the district, she ran for an open seat as the previous incumbent had decided not to run. As per the readings in class women are more likely to win open seats so this election was quite interesting as both the candidates that were competing were women. Looking at Claudia Tenney’s challengers, she was opposed by democrat Kim
Elizabeth Blackwell showed herself as a dedicated and diligent doctor during five years of work in Neurological Associates, and made a significant contribution to the profit margin of the partnership. The partners were delighted with hiring Blackwell in 2005 and they introduced her to medical physicians at a conference. But the referral base Blackwell went through was not the result of that investment by the partnership but instead it was the evidence of her professionalism in neurological sphere.
She first wanted to be an internist, but it changed when she became interested in neurosurgery. But that path was where people told her not to do, so she encountered difficulties obtaining the internship. But she refused to give up; she was then accepted as a surgical intern at the Yale-New Have Hospital. She went there after graduating, cum laude, from medical school in 1975.
Beth Brown is an African American woman who studied astrophysics. Astrophysics is an area of science which applies physical laws discovered on Earth to phenomena throughout the cosmos. Cosmos is the world or universe regarded as an orderly, harmonious system (Dictionary.com). Beth is a very appreciated and inspiring astronomer. An astronomer is an expert in or student of astronomy. She was an inspiration to women and minorities in encouraging them to pursue their careers in astronomy/physics. Beth Brown died at the age of 39 due to a pulmonary embolism. When she died, the astronomical community lost one of its most buoyant and caring individuals (Bregman 1).
“I don’t ever remember thinking that I was an exceptional student, segregation was just always in my way”, Condoleezza once said looking back on her difficult childhood. Segregation played a huge part in Condoleezza Rice’s life. Whether it took place during the times of her childhood or even while she held her position as Secretary of State. No matter how tough times became for Rice, she always held her head up high and never gave up. It’s evident that Condoleezza Rice is a living leader because she is determined, dedicated, and confident.
Why do you think that Monica Ashley was so interested in pushing so hard to implement Project Hippocrates? What made her interested in the project?
Written Case #1: Vera Bradley in 2014: Will the Company’s Strategy Reverse Its Downward Trend?
“We will pass reform that lowers cost, promotes choice, and provides coverage that every American can count on. And we will do it this year.” The preceding is a powerful statement from the newly elected President Barak Obama. One of the main aspects of both political campaigns was health care reform. The above quote shows passion and encouragement, but the quotes about health care do not end there. Georgian republican gubernatorial candidate and health care policy maker John Oxendine expressed: “Their proposal would virtually devastate the private healthcare sector in this country along with competition and patient choice, by replacing it with bureaucratic planning and government control. The result of this plan and its one trillion
At the first glance to Jennifer Trask’s work in Visions and Revisions exhibition at Renwick Gallery I recalled some of René Lalique work. In Paris: Sex and Sensibility—The Allure of Art Nouveau the film showcased some of René’s “cheap” jewelery. The jewelry that was made of horn looked beautiful and very delicate with naturalistic design. On the other hand Jennifer Trask’s work including some jewelry that is made out of animal bone and other recycled material is as exquisite, as René’s beautiful hair combs. In a short documentary that was played in the gallery Jennifer Trask talked about her work and that is inspired by the concept of flora and fauna. Also, she talked about her love for growing things. Besides, Trask’s jewelry that mixed of
She has one of the most recognized faces in the world. Over forty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe‘s life and death is still in question. Her trademark platinum hair and beauty mark, her famous skirt-blowing scene, which eventually she became ashamed of because no one could see the woman who was intellectual had feelings and worked hard behind the glitter, the gold and the smiles. Everyone knew this Marilyn Monroe, but did anybody know Norma Jeane Baker? Marilyn Monroe was a Hollywood icon, maybe even a legend, but who was this luminous woman, and was the happy woman that everyone knew capable of killing herself?
Her record does not negate the bipartisan work other members of the NH Congressional Delegation have done, but rather, it reinforces her own strong record.
