Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric figures to create an emotion for the viewer based on reality that rose in the Modernist period of art. Horseman of the Apocalypse painted by Pierre Daura in Spain, 1939 is a perfect example of a painting demonstrating geometric abstraction. When looking at that the painting Horseman of the Apocalypse, there is a big diamond shape with the edges touching the corners of the canvas. The reason the diamond stands out so much is because Pierre Daura purposely made the colors inside of it lighter which created a strong focal point to what is inside of the diamond. Inside of the diamond is a galloping horse including the colors red, black, pale, and white. Outside of the diamond there is four horse riders which correspond to the four colors of the horses. Right before the beginning of World War I and until the beginning of World War II, a form of modernity known as High Modernism was born. The term modernism comes from famous artist Charles Baudelaire, when he asked fellow artists to step away from neo-classicism and turn to modernity. This revolutionary movement came to be known as modernism. Modernists were eager to experiment and attempted to complicate reality and how we believe that we understand reality. Woolf's own work reflects many of the ideals of the modernist movement.
Cubism art paved the way for geometric abstraction. During the 20th century, artist didn’t want to copy already existing objects and stories, because cameras could do it faster and better. So there was a big rejection of literary academic art. Geometric abstraction is abstract art based on the use of geometric shapes and forms that are often placed in non-illusionistic space. According to Murphie & Potts, we can treat modernism as a cultural condition within that historical period. Modernism can then be discussed as first a general sensibility, reflected in the broadest cultural terms- a new way of seeing the world, perhaps, as experienced by people at that time” (40). I will say modernism is the style of art, architecture, which uses different way than what was used in the past.
