Modern liberalism is a political ideology that emphasizes individual freedom, equality, and social justice. It supports government intervention to address social and economic inequalities. Liberals believe in protecting civil liberties, promoting diversity, and expanding social welfare programs. They advocate for progressive taxation, environmental protection, and healthcare access for all. Modern liberals also prioritize international cooperation and diplomacy. Overall, modern liberalism seeks to create a more inclusive and equitable society through government action and social reform. In Canada, some examples of modern liberal policies include universal healthcare, same-sex marriage legalization, and the decriminalization of marijuana. These policies reflect the values of equality, social justice, and individual freedoms that modern liberalism promotes. Universal healthcare is beneficial to Canada for several …show more content…
First, it helps to redirect law enforcement resources towards more serious crimes, eh? This means that the police can focus on more pressing issues and keep our communities safe. Decriminalization reduces the burden on the criminal justice system and alleviates prison overcrowding. This allows for a more efficient use of resources and promotes a fairer justice system. It helps to undermine the illegal drug market and reduces the influence of organized crime. Decriminalization allows for better regulation and control of marijuana, ensuring that it meets safety standards and quality control. It can generate tax revenue for the government, which can be used for public services and education. It respects personal freedom and individual choice. It reduces the stigma associated with marijuana use and promotes a more open and informed conversation about its potential benefits and risks. Overall, decriminalization of marijuana in Canada brings various social, economic, and health
In order for Canada to reduce dislocation, society must disburse the essential energy and money, “despite is ever-strengthening neoliberal ideology” (229). Neoliberalism is a “form of liberalism that moves away from traditional liberal principles and toward ‘new’ forms of liberalism such as free-market principles” (230). In other words, neoliberalism's policies seek to create a laissez-faire (dealings between private groups are free from government restrictions such as regulations, tariffs, and subsidies) atmosphere for economic growth.
What is neo-liberalism? How do the authors define it? How do they tie this concept to the recent history of women's groups in Canada?
The Liberal Party of Australia believes in the rights and freedoms of all people, supporting the minimisation of interference in the everyday lives of Australian citizens. They promote equal opportunity for all Australians and the encouragement and facilitation of wealth so that all may enjoy the highest possible standards of living, health, education and social justice. The Liberal Party believes that wherever possible, government should not compete with an efficient private sector, and that businesses and individuals instead of government are the creators of wealth and
When evaluating the liberal democracy or constitutional monarchy in Canada it is imperative to identify that the Canadian governing system cannot unambiguously be either correct or incorrect. Hence, Canada’s democratic system functions well enough; nonetheless it would further benefit from adopting a Nordic democratic-socialist model as well as adopting a proportional representation electoral system. A Nordic democratic system would benefit the citizens by providing them with universal health care, closely similar wages, free and inexpensive education, public pension plans, and virtually free trade. Second, if Canada is to adopt a proportional representation system the citizens will be better represented. Despite these flaws in the liberal
Legalizing the use of marijuana has been an ongoing debate since it was first classified as a narcotic in the Narcotic Act in 1970 (Napchan et al, 2011). Once defined as a narcotic, cannabis was made unattainable through a pharmacist, or through prescription by a physician (Napchan et al, 2011). Cannabis, also known as “marijuana”, refers to any preparation of the cannabis plant, most of which are intended for use as a psychoactive substance (Napchan et al, 2011). Marijuana has many benefits in Canada if legalization were to occur. Canada’s economy would benefit greatly from the legalization of marijuana by boosting taxation dollars, as well as creating jobs for many Canadians. Not only would the economy benefit, but communities would benefit
Throughout Canadian politics; policies, bills and campaigns have been most rewarding for large corporations, baby boomers and not so much for most Canadians . Moral and ethical changes for average Canadians considering youth, health care and climate change are often undermined. These aspects are problems that the youth of Canada (including me) will have to face in the future. Unlike other political parties, the NDP are facing these challenges head on targeting the future, this makes them the best choice for the sustainability of Canada. Primarily, The ndp believe that the health care can improve and better satisfy more Canadians.
Liberalism is a set of ideologies in which the foundation of a society lies within the freedom of the individuals within it. The basic principles or values of liberalism include freedom, cooperation and the importance of human reason. Although all forms of liberalism were built upon these common principles or values, there are certain factors that assist in differentiating between them. The two most commonly known forms of liberalism include classical liberalism and modern liberalism. Both of these ideologies put an emphasis on the value of human reason and individual freedom however, they are not the same when it comes to their ideas regarding government intervention in social, political and economic factors.
Liberalism started with the ideas of the Enlightenment. Two of these ideas were freedom of speech and freedom of the individual, and kept growing from there. Liberalism is the belief in a small central government and no monarchy. The liberalists defended the ideas of the definitive rights of an individual’s liberty, equality and property. The liberalists wanted their government to be established on written laws and a constitution based on equality.
The widespread use of medicinal and recreational marijuana in our society has become an alarmingly problematic social issue, that has sparked debate and policy change within in our government. More commonly defined as Medicinal marijuana “the use of cannabis or marijuana, including constituents of cannabis, THC and other cannabinoids, as a physician-recommended form of medicine or herbal therapy.” (US Legal, 1997-2016 ) It has long been known that the Conservative party of Canada does not support the legalization of medicinal marijuana, previous Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated “his party is strongly opposed to the legalization of marijuana, and that it will not happen under his government. Mr. Harper said: “Obviously I think Mr. Trudeau’s actions display poor judgment…our priority as a government is not encouraging the spread of drugs, it’s encouraging job creation in this country.” (CBC, 2015)
This is why the Canadian government is leaning more toward decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana rather than legalizing it. The theory behind the decriminalization of the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use should be tied to a national drug strategy that promotes awareness and prevention, and provides for comprehensive treatment. The government would sponsor programs to educate youths about the dangers of marijuana, and also support programs to aide citizens who have addictions to marijuana.
When doing the Canadian Political Parties Worksheet, I saw that the Liberals had some very good points. While the Progressive Conservative Party wanted to decrease spending on health care and make it the provincial government’s responsibility, while the Liberals want to make it more accessible for people. They also want to make vaccinations mandatory for preventable diseases. The Liberals want to put a cap on university tuition and have post secondary education in their control while the Preservative Conservatives think it should be tied to inflation. The Liberals want to make the use of drones accessible by permits to speed up processes while other parties such as the NDP and Green party say no. The liberals want to bring a new, faster idea by agreeing with the Keystone Pipeline project which will be a trade asset and help bring a stronger bond with our neighbor, USA. The Liberals have also made equality an important factor. They were the party in power that allowed same-sex marriage. The Liberal government has allowed Syrian refugees into the country to get away from the wars, happening in their
Marijuana legalized for recreational use has been a matter of strong public policy debate for years. Society must understand that their mistakes is in the path of legalization and decriminalization. Through our research we prove that marijuana is not nearly as harmful as other substances which are legal such as alcohol and tobacco. Canada must also realize that marijuana will benefit Canada in all other legal, economic, and environmental aspects. In legalizing cannabis, Canada will be able to keep the product out of the black markets and create revenues from taxation, also creating more jobs for Canadians. It is also beneficial for the environment due to the use of little pesticides, and therefore less machinery and less pollution. Hence the
Marijuana is not a recent discovery, but the mysteries surrounding the controversial topic in question remains to be disputed since its prohibition. Classified as an illegal substance, cannabis has been restricted in Canada and around the world. Marijuana is a complex drug and its contradictory claims of medical purposes, and harmful destruction, fuel the debate on whether or not the legal constraints of consuming marijuana should be reconsidered. In consideration of academic journals and news article, citizen welfare, economy benefit, social progression and legal system implications, will be focused on. Despite opposing beliefs, prohibiting the recreational usage of marijuana does not counteract the dangers of the practise thus legalizing marijuana in Canada will allow greater benefit than harm.
Liberals believe government action works to achieve equal opportunity and equalities for every individual in our society. The government’s duty presented here is to “alleviate social ills, to protect civil liberties, and protect individuals and human rights.” The government’s crucial role in a liberalistic society is to guarantee that no one is in need, and that liberal policies stress the need for the government to solve problems. From an egalitarian sense, liberalism focuses on attaining more equal distributions of income and well-being than that that would be generated in the market place otherwise. In a country where freedom and equality play a major role, taking on liberal policies would
Canada has been an independent nation for over 150 years, so it makes sense that there has been numerous changes in the government, since the government has to reflect its society, and as time changes so does its government. However, some ideologies do not believe it should change in order to keep up with its time. Oxford Dictionary states that the definition of an ideology is “A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.” There are various forms of political ideologies; conservatism and liberalism are being brought up for discussion about what makes conservatives and liberals so different in Canada. Throughout the years, the Canadian government has rotated between liberalism and conservatism, these ideologies share some similarities; however, it can be argued that the significant differences are their political, social, and economic views.
