Americans has become acquainted with a variety of techniques designed to break enemies down. Instead of subjecting them to waterboarding, sleep deprivation, or prolonged interrogation. However, I propose the ultimate torture: send them to a modern-day high school. High school is often the most miserable time in a young person’s life because of various forms of persecution, an unpopular or misunderstood student might be routinely teased, ostracized from social groups, or even harassed by technological means. At first glance, many of us are tempted to write off teasing as just a typical, mostly innocent part of the school experience. We may recall what we were advised to do when we was teased by other students and wonder why today’s kids don’t just ignore it, as we were told to. Unfortunately, teasing have taken on a harder edge and became a fine-tuned weapon for the destruction of another’s self-esteem. Particularly in a school environment where so many young people are anxious to align themselves …show more content…
Human beings also needs the company of others, but what if a young student is deliberately prevented from forming social connections? Imagine constantly hearing the buzz about a highly anticipated party that everyone is invited to except you. Or on a more basic level, imagine having nowhere to sit and eat your lunch in the cafeteria because every available seat is reserved for someone who is not you. From the beginning of our modern educational careers, we are taught that each of us are uniquely valuable and special, but the high school experience can easily make a lie of that idea. The cliques that form in high school gains status from their exclusivity, their reputations grow as their numbers shrink. This causes an “odd man out” mentality that leave some students isolated and
Having escaped rule from a tyrannical British government, the United States was founded on ideals of freedom and equality for all people. These fantasies of universal egalitarianism turned out to be merely that: fantasies. American history is full of stories of the oppressed struggling to get the rights they deserve and of the controversy over these issues that consequently ensues. “The Hypocrisy of American Slavery” by Frederick Douglass and “We Shall Overcome” by Lyndon B. Johnson are two speeches made confronting two of these issues. Douglass’s speech, delivered in 1852, condemns the institution of slavery and maintains that slaves are men and are therefore entitled to freedom. Johnson’s speech, on the other hand, was written in 1965 and discussed the civil rights movement. In it, he implored local governments to allow all American citizens, regardless of race, to vote. Despite the significant gap in time between these two addresses, both speakers use similar persuasive techniques, including ethos, pathos, and parallelism, to convince their audience that change needs to be implemented in America.
There is enough discrimination against us, and feeling alienated leads to recidivism. I served my sentence. I paid my debt to society. Why am I still doing time?" - Perry Hopkins, convicted felon and current community organizer for Communities United, talking about voting rights in Maryland.
The fear of finals, the stress of studying, the frenzy to fit in. All of these feelings boil up to one thing: Middle School. Although at times it may seem that one small incident might be the end of the world, by taking certain precautions and following basic social rules, it will seem as though you danced through your middle school years. In the midst of the rigorous academics of St. Michael’s, the perplexity of social events, and the excitement of entering the hallowed halls of high school, you can easily navigate your eighth grade journey by listening to the advice of an eighth grader who has been through it all.
First, it’s the one tardy that rolls off your back like it’s no big deal, and then another and another. It goes on and on until you’re not allowed to come to school anymore because your principal told you that it seems like you don’t care anymore. You miss so many assignments and you’re too far behind, the days keep adding up. If seniors skip their senior year they miss opportunities they can’t receive elsewhere. You don’t get help with college options and scholarships, you spent your whole life to get there, and you don’t get to experience the senior memories you make while in high school.
As young adults start their high school years students do not think about what that means in the real world. In real life we have to work, manage our money, and think about careers. For a lot of high school students, may I dare say most, they do not have a clue about what it means or what to expect as an adult. The high schools should be offering more real world classes as electives or extra classes that can be taken. High schools should offer classes on how to apply for a job and how to file taxes. High schools should also offer more opportunities for students to leave school with more real world experience. Today students are only pushed through the system. Students are not given enough information and enough opportunities upon
“Your assignment is to write a persuasive essay and present it to the class in a week. You will be graded based on how convincing it is. Today we will be choosing topics,” announced Mr. Bowerbank, my 7th grade English teacher and ruler of classroom 110. My class simultaneously groaned at the prospect of work. I simply lifted my head with intrigue as it was already May and about time we had our first essay. He then proceeded to give examples of topics we could choose and gave us some time to think before we had to tell him our topic. My classmates were already rushing to tell the teacher their idea lest someone else steal it. That meant the usual abortion, death penalty, or drug use topics were out. I really couldn't think of anything and the teacher was slowly making his way through the remaining students like an executioner beheading criminals in a line. I have always thought that he would make a marvelous supervillain if he had a curly mustache, a tophat, and a cape. Eventually my name was called. I slowly dragged myself over to his desk. Even sitting down, he still seemed to tower over me. “What is your topic Cindy?” As usual in such desperate times, my mind turned to food. “Waffles are better than pancakes.” I figured that a waffle was just a differently shaped pancake with a nicer texture. “Hmm. Excellent topic. I look forward to your essay!” I survived to live yet another day.
Imagine spending seven hours in a silent, colorless building for the next four years of your life. That’s how some high schools are who don’t offer the arts programs we take for granted everyday. Performing arts, fine arts, and visual arts deserve to be a required piece of highschool because It motivates both special education and regular students, It reduces stress and anxiety, and it creates quality students and schools.
Everybody has a different opinion about every topic. A very opinionated top is if Students students should receive legal penalty for download intellectual property like movies and music. I think students should receive legal penalty ,because their are laws about it, it hurts these artists and industries, and it is stealing
In a world of many political, social and moral issues, I believe that people should back the president in his attempts to secure our border. Without protection of our borders we are open to terrorist attacks. I completely disagree with Henry David Thoreau’s motto that “that government is best which governs least”(Thoreau 369). If Trump was not allowed to try to keep our country safe by protecting our borders, our nation could easily be attack and leaving people to feel unsafe. While I believe that most muslims are not terrorist, I think that it is necessary to have travel bans for some countries in order to keep the American people safe.
To the common eighth grader the thought of going to high school is both thrilling and terrifying. While high school may seem overwhelming at first; following simple guidelines will make your freshmen year more enjoyable.
Going to a place where poverty reigns supreme really makes you appreciate what you have. In past years the city of Detroit has taken on a less than admirable reputation. Crime and poverty are often associated with the former car capital of the Midwest. Most people wouldn’t want to step foot in the city, afraid of what they might experience. But if I had the chance to go back, I would take it in a heartbeat. Detroit is living proof that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.
Sometimes I ask myself: what if I did this? What if I did that? Would it make a difference? Well, if I did nothing and kept wondering, I would never know. What person does is more important than what a person thinks because actions can affect others and accomplish goals.
It’s college graduation day and the graduates have just finished their walks across the stage. The future looks bright and the stress of classes has finally come to an end for most of the students. This day is a day full of joy for most, but for those who didn’t receive scholarships or grants; this day also marks the day that reality hits. For those who were lucky enough to get student loans now comes the time when those loans need to start being paid on. Through all of the excitement, the elephant in the room still remains; how will they possibly begin to pay the tens of thousands of dollars that they owe for the education they just finished?
As I sat there and thought to myself what did everyone thing of me after hearing what I have done. “Taylor Bloom responsible for the deaths of 53 high school students. My head started to wander back to my high school days. In my sophomore year, I was bullied nearly every sing day by the stupid jocks. I started to hate myself so I decided to change my look. The next day I straightened my hair, put a black skirt on, and a white button up shirt with some heels, I left a few of the buttons on my shirt unbuttoned. I was making my way up to the school, I saw all eyes on me even the jocks could not take their eyes off of me. WAS I BECOMING POPULAR? Two weeks later I was the most popular girl in South Lake High. I had a tall, handsome boyfriend and my two new best friends Karli and Rebecca. Everyone wanted to be like me, everyone loved me or as I should say “worshipped me”. Until one night at a party I got super intoxicated and ended up doing things I probably shouldn’t have. That next day everyone was talking about it and all eyes were on me not that I am complaining, but it was not a good look they were giving me… they all knew what I had done that previous night. I did not show up for school the rest of the semester in fear I would lose my reputation so I started getting homeschooled.
The stereotype of women making decisions that are extremely selfish are initially for there self beneficence in this movie as it eventually leads to selfish behaviour and self destruction. The selfish behaviour occurs when Elsa Schneider took the grail and got all possessive over it like it’s all hers and executes like there will be no aftermath to her actions because there is no one superior than her. When Elsa Schneider took the grail and verbally expressed “We have got it, come on! It’s ours Indiana, yours and mine” (Steven Spielberg). Elsa knew she couldn't take the grail past the seal but she did it because she did not perceive the consequences but rather the benefit, all because of the stereotypical selfish behaviour of women. The moment when Dr Elsa Schneider took the grail and said “We have got it, come on! It’s ours Indiana, yours and mine”(Steven Spielberg), shows the how feminist attributes of females such as selfish decisions was shown in this scene. When the words were spoken, the shining gaze in Elsa’s eyes clearly shows how everything she was doing to get the grail was for her own benefit clearly making it a selfish decision. The grail was clearly not only hers and she was not suppose to cross the seal but then again, self benefitting decisions always lead to negative events and negative impressions on the character. Women are usually seen as making decisions that either hurt others or are only benefiting them as this is exceptionally shown in this scene as
