Will Grayson, Will Grayson revolves around two individuals, that happen to have the same name, and how their paths crossed and forever changed. The novel has an interesting format where every other chapter is the other Will Grayson’s point of view. To distinguish this, the second Will wrote in all lowercase letters. It was fascinating to see the contrast of their very different worlds and how they collided. The first Will Grayson was very closed off with his feelings. He shut people out by acting like he didn’t care. Whereas, the other Will, was very familiar with his feelings. He suffered from depression and was forced to deal with it everyday. Having barely any friends or a father, he seeked love. It was enlightening to see the impact they had on each other’s life. When they …show more content…
The book was told in such an informal way that you felt like you can be friends with these characters. The things they said actually made me laugh out loud for several minutes. I have never read a book that has done that. I think a reason for that is because it is relatable and told in such an improper tone. This novel may come across as controversial due to the dark humor. However, this book is meant for young adults and these young adults tend to be intrigued with challenging topics of conversation. This book discussed love, depression, friendship and self revelation. No matter who you are or where you come from, we have all have experienced some of the things these characters have in this story. They even talk about the acceptance of homosexuality. While it may be a serious topic, it is told in a light manner while acknowledging that it is an issue that exists. This novel was a great mixture of real life issues and comedy. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone my age. Most of the topics discussed are things several young adults are going through. However, it may not be for everyone due to the dark humor and the use of
I found it extraordinary with every decision or turning point a character faced in their lives. What I have assimilated from this book is you cannot let where you come from determine your path, it is only you who can determine your future. This is also why the author Wes was one of my favorite characters in this narrative. His story is one out of a multitude that shows anyone can have a bright future. But I did not discern any similarities with the characters and myself. We all were born into different situations and grew up around opposite influences. Overall, my impression of the novel is positive I believe it is an outstanding book and anyone else who reads it I would hope agrees. I would definitely recommend this book to people because it may help them appreciate
Grayson Sender encounters many struggles through his childhood years. In the novel Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky, Grayson feels as though he was born in the wrong body, and that he is truly a girl inside. Beside this, his parents passed away at a young age and he now lives with his brother Brett, uncle, aunt and cousin Jack. Grayson goes through many conflicts with society, other people and himself. Conflict is a major element of fiction that is demonstrated in the book Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky.
It’s interesting watching each character develop for better or worse, especially the father who continues to incite the same emotion from you throughout the whole story until the end as well as the oldest daughter. But as much as you remember they are just characters in a book, you know that there are people out there that share the views as these close-minded characters. There are moments when I wanted to scream, cry and just throw the book across the room because of certain events that occurred, but I could not turn the book
There is a lot of content that I strongly dislike, for example, on the very first page of the book, it goes into detail about one of the characters (named Celie) being touched by her own father, who is flesh and blood. “He [Pa] never had a kine word to say to me. Just say You gonna do what your mammy wouldn’t. First he put his thing up gainst my hip and sort of wiggle it around. Then he grab hold my titties….(Walker).” There is also a lot of disrespect towards women, when Celie gave birth to a child her own father took her baby and sold it for money. She didn’t get to hold her or say goodbye at all. I understand that this actually happened, and still
It captured my attention from the beginning. I like how the Rand was descriptive words to help me have an image of what was happening in the novel. I like the story line. I like the idea of someone breaking way from everyone else and being different from others. That they are able to think for themselves and that it is ok to be different from others. I also liked how the novel had some romance because I do enjoy romance novels. The Language Police written by Diane Ravitch, I did not quit enjoy the book. I do not really like books like that. I do not recommend this book if you are not interested in how the bias panel chooses stories for children. I do recommend the novel, Anthem. It gives the reader a sense of individualism, there is a story behind
This book was a very good read. It was very eye opening. More than what I expected. It was a very well written book about the hidden lives of young
Overall, the characters are easy to get to know and understand. The characters are genuine and likeable and it is a good example of a realistic fiction novel for the teen
I found the book to be a wealth of knowledge. The chapter titles were catchy and I was able to put visual images with some of things which were discussed in the book. In Chapter 2 Allies and Enemies, I automatically saw boys against girls; each group thinks they are better. However we are interchangeable.
Some people may not recommend this novel because they believe it encourages readers to only worry about family rather than achieving their own personal goals. Some may also think this book over dramatizes the harshness of a teenagers life.
What makes this book stand out from the rest is the cast of characters. Many people in the world have probably experienced bullying to some extent, but it is about what the bullies don’t see. One might think that they are just playing a harmless prank on someone less physically capable than themselves. However, actions all have consequences, some a lot worse than others. True friends see past the others bad qualities and appreciate the good ones.
Evaluation: Although the dialect of some of the characters takes some getting use to, I enjoy this book. This is an American classic, filled with humor but critical of people who can be so civilized and so cruel at the same time. It is a boy’s adventurous coming of age that celebrates the individual spirit of America and the romantic vision of innocence and virtue in nature.
John Green and David Levithan come together and write this book about two people who are both named Will Grayson that live in the Chicago, Illinois area. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan a realistic fiction where it teaches you to be proud of who you are and that you're appreciated by many people even when you don’t think you are. I highly recommend this read because it shows the importance of friendship and provokes thoughts.
Dialogue throughout the book is just all over the place, from being humorous to being too childish for some people. Most of the time the humor is pretty dark, but it does make the story intriguing. An example of this was when the characters in the book finally reach The
To start off, a part I did not like about the book was the part about Ove’s dad. I felt as though this complicated the plot a lot and was not necessary to the base of the book. It did not need to be added into the book because it had no effect to my understanding of what was happening in the book. If anything it made me more confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present and it was confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book was when Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out of his daily routine. Ove needed someone to shake up the life he had been living for many years. I would not recommend this book to adolescents because the book was confusing at some points and the humor was guided towards the adults. Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book was still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To continue, this book would be better read by adults because the humor was more guided to that age group. Also, this book is still relevant today because people do not live forever. We have to learn to move on from the bad times just like Ove did. When a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the people around us to begin to feel better about what happened to us. In conclusion, this was a good book and I would rate it three out of five
There first time having sex or there first time trying out drugs. Although the drug aspect is a little extreme it does happen in our society and I believe that this book not only shows us how to speak up against the “man” but also how to basically survive. Im not that older than Jim Carroll in the “Basketball Diaries” and to see someone go through something like that and turn out to be a writer is incredible. It shows the readers that we shouldn't stay idly by while we lose ourselves. We should speak up, voice our opinions, be impulsive in trying to get what we want. And one thing this book has taught me is that we have to keep this idea of “counterculture” alive. Like Jim, I too find myself sinking into a hole that I cannot come out of. But instead of drugs my downfall is credit cards. Im only 19 with 3 credit cards and I owe over 3,000 dollars. My mom and dad help me pay it down but I just get so addicted into using it. If I don't have to use my own money, then why not? But I too find myself wanting to be pure again. And it gives me some shred of hope to see that Jim Carroll overcame his downfall and now its time for
