Did you know that a famous elephant was killed because of a person making the mistake of giving them too much medicine? Some mistakes can lead to good things but others you cannot fix. Mistakes are not a key part of discovery because of the damage and the time.
It has been argued that some people think that making mistakes are a key part in discovering something because of the learning process. When making mistakes, you almost always learn something from them. For example, if someone does not study for a test and they fail it, then they will learn to study next time. In the text it said, “We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made

Making a discovery but damaging the property does not help because then the property would not be able to find anymore new discoveries. An example is, “By 1871, Schliemann had started digging up Troy his way. He was convinced he knew exactly how far to down to dig, and how to get there. He had workers open up huge trenches in the earth, shoveling out layers of debris and artifacts that had lain distributed for centuries. Although he and Calvert both discovered the treasure, the damage done to the site was profound. Today, archaeologists believe that the historic Troy that he Greek poet Homer describes was in a layer much higher up. We will never know for sure” (Duarte 7). This supports my because there could have been more to discover about Troy if they had not damaged the site. They could of learned more historical facts about the site if they had not damaged it. I know this because, “Schliemann’s careless action erased important clues to Troy’s past” (8 Duarte). This supports my claim because he made mistakes and it took away other important clues that other scientist could of discoveried. In summary, mistakes are not the key to discovery because of the damage
The Odyssey Summer Assignment Books 1-4: The Telemakhy Arête o Book 1 Penelope’s suitors show lack of arête by taking advantage of Odysseus’ belonging since they believe he is dead. “For now the lords of the islands –are here courting my mother, and they use/our house as if it were a house to plunder –meanwhile they eat their way through all we have.” (290-298) Telemakhos shows arête when he tells the suitors he will hold an assembly where they will be asked to leave. “At daybreak we shall sit down in assembly/and I shall tell you –take it as you will –/you are to leave this hall.”
Throughout the book the odyssey Odysseus the main character makes mistakes and has character flaws that make his journey home a little longer and gruesome. The two character flaws that I think affect him the most are Pride and Unfaithfulness. They are flaws because throughout the book there are different situations and trials Odysseus goes through on his was back to Ithaca. An example of him showing prideness is when they go to island where the giant cyclopes lives. he displays his pride when wanting to claim a guest-gift from the Cyclops. He tells the cyclopes he will tell his name to him if he receives a guest gift. As well as wanting some hospitality from the giant cyclops. Him and his men could have just left or stolen the cheese inside
Throughout the epic poem “The Odyssey”, the protagonist Odysseus is viewed as a very strong person and an amazing leader. However, Odysseus displays many flaws and weaknesses that helps us connect to him. The biggest flaw represented by Odysseus is that he cannot control his men very well, which is shown in various parts of the epic poem. Since Odysseus demonstrates this weakness, it causes him to have many more obstacles and problems that he has to deal with in order to reach his goal. Odysseus needs his men in order to succeed so without them he cannot defeat his enemies and obstacles that await him. In the epic poem “The Sirens”, Odysseus’ men butchered and ate the Cattle of the Sun God. In the “Land of the Dead” which is
Heroes are known for being strong, brave and helping other people. Sadly if you’re human there’s flaws when you try to help. Flaws are the mistakes we make which make us human. In Hhomer’s “ The Odyssey ” odysseus the main character is very intelligent, but he has excessive hubris that gets in the way on his voyage home.struggles to go home and gets himself into problems along the way. Odysseus can be clever and courageous at times, he knows how to create a plan and successfully get out of problems he started.his situation.
Every individual has flaws, but it is up to the individual’s ability to control their imperfection in order for him/her to get out of predicaments. The flaw of one person will also not only affect that specific individual, but also the people around him/her. In the epic, The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus is not only a courageous, noble, and decisive hero, but also a leader who desires glory, and holds a great amount of pride and curiosity. This eventually leads him to give out his prudence and other unfortunate events that follow. Due to Odysseus’ flaws, him and his shipmates endure a long journey finding their way back to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
As an unknown author once said, “Everyone has weaknesses, but great people know how to deal with it and change it into something powerful.” This indicates that everything comes down to how you take care of your less favorited characteristics. Heroes are always looked at as being perfect, however, they have weaknesses just like humans. In the book The Odyssey by Homer, the hero Odysseus has many human related problems with his attitude, like stubbornness, pride, and being egotistical, which results in putting himself in troublesome circumstances that could’ve been avoided in the first place.
When one thinks of an epic hero, such as Odysseus from Homer’s The Odyssey, flaws tend to be dismissed like dirt being washed off a golden statue. However, in Greek mythology even the divine gods and goddesses display imperfect character traits. Faults like Odysseus’ hubris tarnish his heroic image, but he is redeemable through his favorable traits. Although a hero is given high expectations, there is no expectation for him to be completely void of faults because heroes are human.
Odysseus and I are both contentious. Odysseus is combative and always ready for a fight we see this is the Odyssey many times throughout the book. An example of this would be when they were going up to Scylla and Odysseus didn’t listen to the advice he was given “I tied on my cuirass and took up two spears” (936). This shows he is antagonistic and is always ready for a fight or argument. Odysseus knows how to fight and win too he killed a man in a very gruesome way “Odysseus’ arrow hit him under the chin and punched up to the feathers through his throat” (955) which that action sparked him killing most of men in Ithaca. I am also contentious and am always ready for an argument but not a fight. Most of my days I am always ready for a political
“The biggest risk is not taking any risk...;”(Zuckerberg, Mark). If you take a risk you may succeed or you may fail and become wiser by learning from mistakes. Odysseus goes on a journey and finds out that independence is key to success. Homer and Oliver use characterization to convey that we undertake journeys to find what we’ve lost; In doing so we learn that the risks we take give us experience and teach us how to become independent and to protect others in a selfless way.
I feel that in order to achieve personal success in our society you need 3 key things. For one, you need to have determination. In our culture, we seem to have a universal ideology along the lines of “keep going, and you will succeed eventually.” I feel that these idea’s are incredibly true, and have been shown to be effective every time. A good example of this trait in one of the texts we read is in the Odyssey when Odysseus needed to get back home, and despite the odds being against him, he never gave up. He always kept going, and when the going got rough, he got back right up and started over again. Another trait is intelligence. Because we have gone away from warrior culture in modern times, academic success is more than mandatory to achieve
Sing I me, Muse, and through me tell the story of the lady nymph goddess Calypso. Oh so beautiful and immortal who lives in the sea- hollowed caves on the island Ogygia. She craved the hero of Troy, king of Ithaka, son of Laertes, a mortal and took him as her own. Nine long years they spent on the island together.
Throughout vast journeys of many heroes, no other hero had a more complex journey than Odysseus. This journey is called The Odyssey, written by Homer. It is an epic poem or story told of a hero name Odysseus on a 20-year voyage trying to get back home from the Trojan War. The great epic poem known as The Odyssey and attributed to Homer was probably first written down around the eighth century BC, but the origins of the ancient story in myth, legend, and folklore and art appear to be much older. Greek Epic Hero When you think about Greek Epic heroes, Odysseus will most likely come to mind. Odysseus is the main character in Homer's poem "The Odyssey." "The Odyssey" is a narrative poem that describes Odysseus' adventures
Ten years after the fall of Troy, the victorious Greek hero Odysseus has still not returned to his native land Ithaca. A band of rowdy suitors, believing Odysseus to be dead, has overrun his palace, courting his faithful—though weakening—wife Penelope, and going through his stock for food. With permission from Zeus, the goddess Athena, Odysseus' greatest immortal ally, appears in disguise and urges Odysseus' son Telemachus to seek news of his father at Pylos and Sparta. However, the suitors, led by Antinous, plan to ambush him upon return.
Mistakes do not further the creative process or the chance of discovery, they merely stall it and only make the work more laborious. John Denker, a scientist, said that “...’big discoveries’ were actually invented step by step… A lot of these small discoveries were predicted, and then proven with no mistakes.”(Careful Science 19) When an unprofessional mistake is made, such as, a miscommunication with a friend, that mishap can be taken and learned from so no more such mistakes will occur in the future; however, when a mistake is made during a significant event, such as, taking more than the prescribed medicine, the results of that carelessness can be disastrous. In the article “Lost Cities, Lost Treasure”,”Although he [Schliemann] and Calvert
It is important to keep reading, “The Odyssey.” Even though it is 2800, years old, students still need to learn about it. It is important to continue studying “The Odyssey” because is it a moral story, the historical significance is important, and it is essential to study other culture’s mythology.
