Mission command sets the foundation of control and applies to all levels of leadership throughout Army. Mission command allows commanders to utilize mission orders to give direction to subordinates. Ultimately, it empowers leaders to be adaptive in the face of an ever complex and changing world. Mission command has a foundation based on trust, understanding and a shared purpose. Effective commanders use six principals of mission command to influence situations while developing trust and a shared understanding. These principals are building teams through trust, creating shared understanding, providing a clear commanders intent, exercising disciplined initiative, use mission orders, and accept prudent risk. I will be using them as tools during my time as a leader. In this essay, I will briefly describe what each principal is and how it will affect me as a new junior lieutenant. Trust is the foundation of the Profession of Arms. Commanders must build cohesive teams through mutual trust. Commanders need to focus on creating an environment where mutual trust can flourish and this can be very challenging. Using this framework during the occupation and rebuilding of the province of Nineveh and its capital city of Mosul, Iraq, General Petraeus kept within his higher commander’s guidance and successfully reestablished basic services and security to the city. To demonstrate, it is good to appeal to what is written and said by Robert Gates and General Martin Dempsey about the attributes of this philosophy.
Mission Command Every organization needs a foundation in order to successfully operate and execute a mission. The United States Army base their foundation on mission command. Mission command is when soldiers use sound base decisions in order to execute land operations to achieve the commander’s intent. The core of mission command is mutual trust, shared understanding, and purpose. Everyone in the unit should be able to feel confident to trust one another by the characteristics that the Army has provided such as Army Values, empathy, Warrior Ethos, and discipline.
In order to really delve into the topic of Mission Command, we must first accurately define it. So what is Mission Command? Per doctrine, Mission Command is “the exercise of authority and direction by the commander using mission orders to enable disciplined initiative within the commander’s intent to empower agile and adaptive leaders in the conduct of unified land operations.” Now that’s a mouthful. But, what does it really mean? In simplified terms, mission command is the way a leader develops and leads his subordinates into accomplishing the mission while leaving room for leaders to take ownership and initiative in completing the mission.
Through my military career I have been told the importance of mission readiness and how much of an impact it can have on the unit if one soldier is not up to standard. The other solders must not only continue working on the load they have but also pic up my slack. Not being fully mission capable waste time and energy of my peers, my NCOs and the officers in my unit. I must do better as a soldier I am A specialist looking to go to the promotion board in January but I made a private mistake. Mission readiness comes down to discipline and prioritizing which I will explain in this essay. Discipline and standards define what it means to be an Army professional.
Trust between peers knowing that your battle buddy has your back in combat and trusting that the next guy on guard duty won’t fall asleep and let the enemy through the gates while you’re sleeping. Trust between Soldiers and their leaders. Leaders build trust through his or her competence, character, and commitment (ADRP1, 2013). Trust between Soldiers their families and the Army. I trust the FRG will keep my family informed when I am unable to and provide assistance in my absence. There is also Trust between civilians and the Army. The country trusts us to serve and protect the Constitution. Trust is a very essential part of our profession and is only earned not given.
