Mission Command Writing Assignment Mission command is the Army’s framework of balancing command and control though unified land operations. Mission command sets the foundation of control and applies to all levels of leadership throughout Army. Mission command allows commanders to utilize mission orders to give direction to subordinates. Ultimately, it empowers leaders to be adaptive in the face of an ever complex and changing world. Mission command has a foundation based on trust, understanding and a shared purpose. Effective commanders use six principals of mission command to influence situations while developing trust and a shared understanding. These principals are building teams through trust, creating shared understanding, providing a clear commanders intent, exercising disciplined initiative, use mission orders, and accept prudent risk. I will be using them as tools during my time as a leader. In this essay, I will briefly describe what each principal is and how it will affect me as a new junior lieutenant. Trust is the foundation of the Profession of Arms. Commanders must build cohesive teams through mutual trust. Commanders need to focus on creating an environment where mutual trust can flourish and this can be very challenging. Since comes from people, there are really no shortcuts, trust takes time to build. As a new lieutenant, time will be an incredibly value resource. Time is finite and since we operate in a complex world, there will always be leadership
