Brooks Gosswein is on top of first base, eyes squinted and staring at the conference on the pitcher’s mound. The sun above the third base dugout blinds him, as he peers through the dirt, sweat and eye black caked on his face, fresh off a single up the middle. As the umpire walks to the mound, ensuring the mound visit is all but over, Brooks peers at the scoreboard: two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with Waterdown High up by one. Brooks returns his focused gaze to find the pitcher is now matching his, as he pats his glove twice and toes in the rubber. He briefly pauses, before taking his usual five and a half foot lead, his eyes become intense, affixing on the pitcher’s body, as his fingers bend the leather of his batting gloves into a

Although the Southern Oregon weather hasn’t particularly indicated the start of spring, the season of new beginnings has commenced and brought along with it a fresh new Pirate baseball team thirsty for success. With a varied degree of experience at their repertoire, the Phoenix Pirates look to revitalize a program that has missed the playoffs by one single spot in the past two consecutive years. After completing their preseason with a record over .500, the team transitioned into the league contests and was quickly confronted with some struggles. Through their first six games, the boys were only able to pick up two victories (both against Klamath Union in a double header). They managed to compete with two of the toughest teams in the state when battling against Hidden Valley and Henley, but ultimately dropped all three of the contests featuring those ball clubs. Despite a rocky start, the Pirates seemed poised to make a run for the playoffs coming off a competitive double header in Henley that certainly boosted their confidence for the ensuing games.
The sun was shining and birds were singing as the 8th graders of Adair Middle School lined up getting ready for tryouts. Memphis Range was the new kid in town. Levi knew that with Memphis coming in he would have to find a way to put Memphis off his game to be able to be the starting
In Los Angeles, it’s a very popular and expensive place to live, and due to many reasons over 55,000 people have been homeless, up to 2006 the homeless would get arrested for laying in public areas, losing all of their belongings. As the first day started, butterflies filled everyone who stepped on the baseball diamond. The distinguished and admirable upper classmen smirked at the scrawny freshmen in disbelief of our abilities. I was not one to draw attention to myself, so I went about minding my own business trying not get noticed by the older boys. As the notorious head coach strutted onto the field, every single soul cowered at his presence. The coach then bellowed, “Let the tryouts begin. We will start with our hitting.”
“He made some really good pitches when guys got on base,” said Mazey of Grove. “For a young guy to go out there and throw the most important pitches and the best pitches of the game from the stretch, with guys on second base and third base, I think he grew up a lot tonight. He’ll clean up his walks. He’s going to be a really good pitcher for us in the future. That was encouraging. When he came out of the game, it was 0-0, so how can you ask for anything more than that, five shutout innings?”

My breakfast started to creep back up my throat as game time got closer and closer. I walked across the patch of grass behind home plate and was towered over by the 30 foot backstop with a huge net suspended from it. My bulging bag of equipment was beginning to make my shoulder hang. I walked down the steps into the cement dugout and placed my bag under the bench that spanned the entire length of the dugout. I sat down, laced up my cleats, and put my warm-up jacket on in preparation for batting practice. I stepped onto the grass surrounding the dugout to get the feeling of how wet the grass was. I dug my cleats into the grass and began my usual routine of taking certain practice swings as I gazed upon the press box in the wake of the backstop. Preceding the burn in my forearms, caused from the practice swings, I marched behind the dugout to the rows of batting cages to wait my turn in line. Pacing back and forth I knew I had to keep my nervousness to a minimum. I popped in a wad of Big League Chew and continued to
Coopera suggested having a poster about the credit builder opportunity. Nothing too complicated like “ask us about building your credit” and “come here to build your credit.”
