Minimum Wage Should Increase Unemployment

In my opinion minimum wage should not be raised. With the proposal to being to spend a billion dollars to help het less than a million people under the poverty line out, and it only realistically helping people who are in the middle class and above. As of right now our leaders want to accept a plan that is not going to work the way the say it is. So even if it does take 900,000 over the poverty line this will only make a slight dent in our high poverty, less than one percent. This is going to be an extremely ineffective way to decrease the gap between the middle class and the people who are under the poverty line. By raising the minimum wage you increase the wages of low wage workers who are living of it, but the consequences from it could be even more devastating. It will cause companies to lay off workers, prices of products will rise, and companies will be less likely to hire. Don’t forget the fact again that the majority of the families who are going to benefit from this the most are already above and out of poverty. Instead of spending 100,000,000,000 dollars a year on something that will have a huge negative effect on this country we should start putting more resources on the ever growing and lingering national debt. This is going to turn out to be a failed attempt to help bring low wage workers to a better living

The government shouldnt raise minimum wage because though you would get more money minimum wage jobs are temporary jobs and meant to be treated as such. The minimum wage was never designed to be a "living wage" it was for all intent and purpose to be a safeguard against legalized slavery. If a company wants decent workers they will pay a decent wage. If the jobs are too low paying no one will want them and it will force the rates to be increased. Also if the rates are too low it will also discourage illegal immigration which we all know is a problem. A minimum wage job is a starting point not a career. And continuously increasing that wage only raises the costs of all goods and those earning that minimum wage will have their income

The first reason for raising the minimum wage is because it will help the government to save million dollars. As David Cooper states: “new report from the Economic Policy Institute indicates that raising the federal minimum wage to $12 by 2020 would lift wages for more than 35 million workers nationwide and generate about $17 billion annually in savings to government assistance programs.” By saving this money, the government could improve the economy by using this money as a part to improve access insurance or to improve school lunch.

In today's society it's expensive to live in America and even getting day by day is very difficult if you are living on minimum wage, of course it's more difficult for some people than others depending on their situation and their living conditions. America should raise minimum wage because it would make things easier for people who are struggling. A higher minimum wage not only increases workers’ incomes, it will also be good for our economy. A quarter of people working minimum wage are at least raising one child. This change will help a lot of people it would make our country a better place.

Raising the minimum wage is a false idea that millions of Americans have; people believe it will put more money in their pocket and will be making more money than he or she is now. This is a wrong accusation to make. The people wanting to raise the minimum wage is the people of lower income levels. A report from the National Low Income Housing stated, “ In no state can an individual working a typical 40-hour week at the federal minimum wage afford a one- or two- bedroom apartment for his or her family.” People working with a minimum wage of $10 to $13 can’t afford an apartment for themselves. This leads to homelessness. The effect of this is rising poverty rates. People can't afford much, let alone an apartment, and will go into poverty and homelessness. Clearly, minimum wage should be raised so that people can afford apartments.

This has done the opposite by hurting businesses and reducing employment, while minimum wages go up, so will the costs of living. Most of the people working for minimum wage are 16 between 24 years old, 37% of workers are going to school working part time. Enrollment tuition has increased over the years, and raising the minimum wage could mean further increasing expenses. But, for people who aren 't pursuing an education and begin working right out of school, the federal minimum wage $7.25 looks like it can be hard to live on. Raising the minimum wage would most likely increase with the cost of living, making cost of living or tuition even more expensive, making it harder to pay for groceries or bills. Just because someone starts out at a minimum wage job, doesn 't mean they can 't progress through the company and earn a better wage over the years. Minimum wages are more for entry level paying jobs that don 't require any certain set of skills to be able to do what they ask. Maintaining the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 will help stop rise of inflation.

This country is in dire need of a wage increase but just because it needs one doesn’t mean people shouldn’t read in between the lines and how it will be helpful. Common sense also plays a role here. If you were being paid a penny an hour when you really deserve a quarter an hour, would you work your hardest? Would you begin your work enthusiastically at full-throttle? No, you wouldn’t, and the second you saw a better opportunity at another place of employment, you would jump to it. Why should you feel loyal towards a job or company which does not pay you enough to live? The federal minimum wage should be raised in order to ensure the effort and loyalty of workers.

Contrary to these beliefs, I believe that raising the minimum wage will not only benefit the company and employee immensely, but overall increase the productivity of workers. The raising of the minimum wage will help these low income families support their families, which decreases the poverty level too.

As our federal government debates the idea to raise the minimum wage, there are several interesting questions that occur. Most importantly, should we raise the minimum wage? I believe it is a bad idea to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour up to $10.10 or more in a short period of time. I will explain why raising minimum wage radically would kill jobs and hurt our economy.
