Some people are born into success, others are taught to work hard and never give up on their dreams. People who work hard to achieve success are inspirational, talented, and intelligent in their work; but they must be something more than their work. Milton S. Hershey was far more than just a candy maker, he is a caring, intelligent, and generous man that revolutionized the way people ate chocolate forever.
Milton’s childhood was not an easy one, his upbringing forged the foundation of his beliefs that enabled him to be such a hard working businessman and chocolatier. “Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857, in Pennsylvania, to Veronica and Henry Hershey. He was born in a tiny community farm where he spent most of his childhood days,”

Milton was a good man, the memories of his struggle in his early years being a strong reminder to him of the great wealth that he has and how far he has come. “Milton Hershey believed wealth should be used for the benefit of others… He also understood (along with many other great businessmen) that good works are also good business and therefore did not lessen the depth or scope of his interest in other people’s welfare,” (“Milton Hershey School”). Milton never blatantly stated his beliefs on how wealth should be shared because, “Mr. Hershey was a doer, not a philosopher,” (“Milton Hershey School”). Milton would never sit around and think about the ways that his employees could be helped, when he had an idea, he would seize the moment. He would not wait around for someone to help and he would help instead. During the stock market crash in 1929 Milton Hershey kept his employees by constructing a new high school, a sports arena, a community building, and a 170-room hotel. (“Milton S. Hershey”). Instead of letting employees go and watching as someone else attempted to help them, Milton helped instead. He not only provided for his pre-existing employees, but he was able to hire more people to work on these massive projects of his. Hershey had done many great things in his life but sadly all great things must one day end. “On October 13, 1945 Milton Hershey died at 10:00 A.M. in the Hershey Hospital,” (Coyle, Millie Landis). But Milton did not leave behind just a changed world of sweets, he left behind an amazing school that has helped hundreds of students since it was founded. “Milton and Catherine Hershey founded this school for orphaned boys in 1909,” (“Milton Hershey School”). Milton and Catherine were not able to have children of their own, so it is believed that is why they founded the school, on top of Milton’s giving nature. They did not only just found the school, though, Milton has continued to support it even to this day by devoting some of the Hershey Chocolate Co.’s profits to the school. “Known today as the Milton Hershey School, the 10,000-acre institution provides housing and education for nearly 1,000 boys and girls whose family life has been disrupted,” (“Milton S. Hershey”). Milton has provided so much for so many young kids and will continue to support them even though he passed away over 50 years ago. Milton’s generosity while he was alive has enabled many young people to have a better, more stable start in life than he did. Even after death, his generosity continues to affect the lives of

In March of 1781 William Herschel, a musician and amateur astronomer discovered what would eventually be called “Uranus.” He discovered what he initially thought was a comet, while looking for what he called double stars. He ended up finding Uranus as it passed by one of the stars he was looking at. He recorded is in a journal, and after a few days looked for it again. He was able to see that it was moving and that it appeared to have an orbit. He contacted some friends of his that were astronomers and gave them the work that had done and wanted to them to explore it further than he could. They ended up finding the same thing and also classifying it as a comet, probably a comet called 1770, and congratulating him on his discovery. It wasn’t
The founder of Hershey Chocolate, Milton Hershey, had a long journey to creating some of the most famous candy today. From a young age he lived in poverty and his parents constantly fought due to differences, which would always have an impact on Milton’s life. He started out in the business struggling, first with his caramel business going under and the unhelpful advice of his father that only led to Milton making more mistakes. Once Milton made it big he went on to do amazing things and dedicated a big part of his life to helping other people and focusing on the well-being of his employees. This legacy of educating disadvantaged children from the community would affect our thinking as members of the Hershey Trust Company’s board of trustees. It may be viewed as a bias in our decision-making where we may favor protecting the endowment of the Milton Hershey School over protecting the equally important interests of the Hershey Foods Corporation and the Hershey, Pennsylvania community in general.

Despite what some may think, it is proven that Milton Hershey had a positive impact on his community and the world in a various of ways. For example, he built the Milton Hershey school to benefit underprivileged youth. In fact, this school is still in operation today and was originally opened on November 15, 1909. Another way Hershey impacted the lives of many was through the building of Hersheypark. This amusement park was established in 1907 and, like the school, is still in operation today. On the other hand Hershey’s Chocolate also left a huge impact on the entire nation and the world and continues to be successful today. In his epic poem titled Paradise Lost, John Milton describes his work as a process to justify “the ways of God to men”. In terms of the personal and individual, Milton’s main concern was between a man’s relationship and God. With this, comes the very idea of free will itself. One can define free will as the ability and freedom to choose between different possible courses of action. Not only is free will portrayed in Adam and Eve, but is also associated with God, Christ, Satan and the fallen angels. Milton enables these characters to make their own choices and have their own consequences based on their own decisions and free will. Throughout the poem, John Milton supports this concept of acting freely under God, he shows the reader that choosing ones own actions freely and independently is way more substantial and becomes more meaningful to ones self. Each characters free will in this poem helps explain why having this freedom of choice is so important and crucial in expressing and becoming ones self.
