Wrestling with Justice- The Tale of a Mega-Bite.
Do you feel that Mike Tyson’s actions are justifiable when he bit off a piece of Heavy-Weight Champion Evander Holyfield’s ear during a re-match in the late 1990s?
Holyfield knew what he was getting himself into. He had faced opponents such as George Forman, and James Douglas both heavyweight champions. Boxing is an abrasive sport physically, Mike Tyson is a tenacious competitor. Anyone willing to fight Mike Tyson would have to be unswerving also. Although, biting off a piece of someone’s ear is unnecessary roughness, Holyfield showed grace towards Tyson for the incident later on.
Even though, there continues to be mental training for athletes, which include several steps of mental preparedness

Boxing is the only sport where the goal is to hurt someone, even though there will often times be injuries or even deaths in other sports. In football, a player can be tackled and injured by the other team. In hockey, a player can be hit into the wall by the opposing team and injured. Why then is boxing the cruelest sport if athletes are injured in every sport? The purpose of football and hockey is not to hurt the opposing team, but rather to score points. Even though there will often times be injuries in these sports, injuring the other team is not the goal of the sport. In boxing the objective is not to score a touchdown, it is to hit the opponent as much as possible until he is knocked out; boxing is simply “a stylized mimicry of a fight to the death” (Page 185).

Jessica Firger writes “In many circumstances--if not most-- frequent blows to the head have effects that may last a lifetime, a condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).” This disease causes a variety of psychiatric, and neurological symptoms including memory loss, depression, anxiety, aggression and dementia (Firger). None of the blows have to result in unconsciousness, in fact, most people diagnosed have never had severe brain trauma or concussions (NFL Concussions Fast). Early studies found a disease in correlation to boxing, a condition called dementia pugilistica, or “punch-drunk syndrome” (Alzheimer’s and Dementia). Studies for dementia pugilistica began in 1929, outlining the symptoms as memory loss, confusion, dizziness, and personality changes. (Alzheimer’s and Dementia).
There are many people that went through a lot in order for our world to become what it is today. Jesse Owens who had overcame many obstacles such as cherishing his life when he realized he was aging, dealing with racism throughout his college career, defeating Hitler in his own olympics, and being an inspiration to many people. Many of the obstacles that Jesse Owens overcame relates to all kind of different traits that Rom Brafman mentioned in his book Succeeding When You’re Suppose To Fail The 6 Enduring Principle of High Achievements. Different evidenced that proved these different traits were found in, Jesse Owens: A Biography by Jacqueline Edmondson, American Sports: A History of Icons, Idols, and Ideas by Murry R Nelson, and a journal The Olympics, Jesse Owens, Burke, and the Implications of Media Framing in Symbolic Boasting by Mike Milford.
Years after the fight, Tyson came to Holyfields home, and presented him with his ear, and both became friends with nothing but a good laugh towards what happened in the past. “It is considered one of the most famous sports scandals of all time, but is seems Mike Tyson has finally made full amends with Evander Holyfield – at least on screen” (Dawes). After years of hate, both fighters from the most memorable fight of all time became good friends. Tyson and Holyfield became such good friends that they even took further steps and took their friendship to be viewed worldwide. “Since reuniting on the Oprah Winfrey show in 2009, 12 years after the ear-biting fight, the pair have rekindled their 90s friendship. Last year they famously exchanged quips about the incident on Twitter as Holyfield began promoting his Real Deal BBQ Sauce. Holyfield posted: ‘My realdealbbqsauce.com will make you take a bite out of someone's ear! Ask Mike Tyson – Luv ya bro!’ ” (Dawes). One of the richest, well known fights in all of boxing history, Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield became friends, without it coming to matter that there was blood and ear pieces lost, and a long time of hating each
In another tie-up Tyson bit Holyfield a second time, this time on his other ear, but the fight wasn’t stopped. They continued to fight until the end of the round, and the second bite mark was discovered while Holyfield was resting in his corner. This time, Tyson got disqualified, and all hell broke loose. Tyson went on a rampage, trying to get to Holyfield, but security surrounded him. That didn’t matter to Tyson, he just kept fighting through security to try and get Holyfield, but he was forced back into his corner. When Tyson was leaving after the match, a person threw a water bottle at him, and he went straight after the person, and had to be restrained by security again.” (Kostecki). The events after that were just Tyson going downhill. He lost his boxing license, had to do community service, and was fined a bunch of money. “I think it was the largest fine in sports history, or at least, boxing history. This changed my perspective on boxing, and after that fight, boxing’s popularity just plummeted. It left mainstream television, and was basically replaced by the MMA. Around 2010 I think they made up, but I think it was mostly a publicity stunt. The reason I know it
Edward Hoagland used a fair, but not exact, level of detail of the setting throughout the passage. The author could have gone into an incredible amount of depth. Though I am glad he did not, seeing as most books who go into exact detail range into a vast amount of pages. Do not give me wrong, I am a lover of books. Sometimes you have to skim through the pages of an interesting book when you are absolutely dying to know. Since most people are more interested in the plot of a writing rather than the exact details of the setting such as every minuscule thing of value, as the author made this passage. Judging by the blurb above the passage, I was expecting a more 'attacking' approach towards boxing in general. Seeing as in line three of the blurb, the author describes boxing as a "poignant way to earn a
(Calder-Smith, 2004) During the next decade, Tyson was sentenced to six years for the rape of a model. His wife divorced him for alleged domestic violence, and he lost his boxing licence for biting his opponent’s ear during a boxing match. (Gutteridge & Giller, 1996)

In earlier days sports psychology was mostly concerned with developing assessment methods that would identify those people with the potential to become serious superior athletes. Today the focus is on psychological training, exercises that strengthen the mental skills that will help athletic performances on the path to excellence. These skills include mental imagery and focus training. If an athlete is serious about becoming the best he or she can possibly be, the most essential ingredient is commitment to practice the right things. It takes incredible commitment to reach the top: a commitment to rest and train the body so it can perform under the most demanding conditions and a commitment to train the mind to
Boxing - a violent cage fight, or a crowd pleasing sport? Boxing is a high intensified sport that can be seen as helping the fighter in life or permanently damaging the fighters future. Many say that boxing is one of the safest sports; however, boxing can leave permanent brain damage from constant punches to the skull. The sport boxing is for managers to earn money while their fighter is in the ring fighting against another human until one gives up, or gets knocked out. A fight could be the end of one’s career, or even one’s life. Boxing should be banned because the money earned does not trump the risk of death, the mixed messages from fighters in the ring confuse the laws regarding assault, and the constant punches to and athletes head leaves permanent damage.
