There are many issues that are going on in middle schools across the country, that are affecting children each and every day. Since middle school is known to cause depression, self-isolation, self-esteem issues and aggression, it’s very important for parents and teachers to be aware of these issues and formulate a suitable proposal for these issues (Cauley & Jovanovich, 2006). This essay will throw some light on some of the major issues which are faced by the children at the middle school level. Self-esteem
Middle school children deal with a lot of pressure with obtaining good grades and the consent fixture of self to fit in. In middle school kids deal with a lot of self-esteem issues. Children in middle school tend to compare themselves to their peers and then decide they don’t measure up to others whom she believes to be smarter, more good looking and more popular. Many parents would agree, it’s difficult to watch a child deal with self-esteem issues, especially when you know how

Many people endure three years of middle school and four years of high school. It is an eventful time for children between 11 to 18 years old. During the adolescent years there are hormonal changes, environmental changes and emotional developmental gains. Middle school is the beginning of transitioning towards independence under the constant eye of adults. During high school they are challenged with real-world challenges that help them transition into adulthood. The behaviors of these individuals change as the factors change around them. For every person, the experience of high school or middle school may be different. Either way, both have the same goal of wanting the student to succeed and evolve. Even so, the similarities and differences vary. Middle school and high school are alike in the areas of receiving an education, socializing with others, and having teachers while different in areas of maturity, difficulty in work, and independence.
The concept of Middle School as describe by Erb (2006), “remain unequalled as the most potent factor for improving the performance of young adolescents"(p. 10). Middle school and high school students tend to become self-conscious and more anxious. Many have the audacity to say things that are exaggerated and self-destructive. Others choose to not attend school. Trauma events affect physical and mental health. Being in school is very critical in a child’s development.
The article articulates how the transition period of moving from the childhood school where many children have been since they started at school to a new school that is very different is a risk factor for anxiety in children. In correlation with the Robins and Trzesniewski article the two articles may indicate a helpful time to implement some helpful interventions on self-esteem. The transition between elementary school to middle/junior high school is extremely similar to the transition between childhood and adolescents. Both times are filled with high stress, changing roles, and coincidentally are happening around the same time. As a budding school psychologist, I found both articles helpful in understanding the best ways and times to implement interventions. Self-esteem is an important aspect of a child’s life and can affect many facets of their lives. As a school psychologist, it will be part of my job to find the best ways to use the knowledge I have gained, such as from the Robins and Trzesbuewski article and implement them to the best of my abilities. Knowing the timing for the best intervention is
Middle school is a tough few years for many students. You are in a difficult stage in life, you’re finally not a child anymore but are not yet a teenager. Being stuck somewhere in between is hard and with that time comes a lot of challenges. When I was in sixth grade,I was the same way, trying to adjust to switching classes, multiple teachers, friends changing and many other hurdles to overcome. I felt however that I like everyone else would overcome it and be just fine. I had an average middle school career, until I was sitting in math and slowly things were not as I saw them.
I do not remember much from middle school; however I do recall having trouble fitting in and making friends. For the Central Bucks School District, seventh grade marks the beginning of middle school. My awkward 13-year-old self, with bright blue hair, was immersed in a pool of people at Holicong Middle School I had never met before. I had spent the past seven years with the same people and now they were mixed in with this monstrous crowd of new people, forcing me to make new friends. I was not a normal kid by society’s standards, and I still am a quirky kid, but at that point in my life I was still trying to figure out how to behave in a social setting. That was not a simple task for me; I was a hyperactive kid who dyed her hair a plethora of colors. To make matters worse, I was not mixed in with a pleasant group of people.
Many students worry about how their middle school years will go. Middle school is a very important part of a student’s education. Middle school is their initiation into high school and could really impact their future. Many elementary school students think that they are prepared and can do well in middle school, but many are not ready. Also, students who do not do well in middle school tend to not do well in high school. One lesson I would like to teach elementary school students is how to survive middle school, which is important because it will lead them to a better future by being prepared, managing time, and knowing how to problem solve.
Has the city ever thought is the middle school big enough? Well it is not. Today the board will discuss how to fix that problem. This city needs a bigger school because the children are crowded in the hallways. Some have to carry backpacks. It will cost the city 16.3 million dollars. This will benefit the students because then they can make it to class quicker.
Middle childhood is defined a number of ways, but perhaps best defined as the ages 6 to 12 years of age or prepubescent to pubescence Middle childhood is a challenging time and a major challenge is social constructs, as this is the earliest time when children begin to move away from parental influences and establish more meaningful peer and other adult relationships. It signifies a new set of social contacts with adults and other children as well as a wider variety of settings than those that characterize early childhood. Children begin to see themselves as a part of a bigger whole. Peer influences can become more powerful than the adults in the children’s life and impact their sense of self. Grouping is established and teasing of others
Many people have told me that I tend to overreact to things. My sister has told me that that's an understatement. I agree. The fact that my Asian parents sometimes tell me to be more relaxed about my Korean school grade says it all. So of course, among my list of anxiety-givers, middle school is one of the top few. Undoubtedly, the aforementioned many people must think of me as a drama queen when it comes to academics. But they should count themselves as lucky to have missed speculating how I first reacted to the prospect of attending middle school.
According to the Association of Middle Level Educators (2010), the middle school years are the most important years of a child’s life. During this time, many aspects of a child changes. Their body is changing in ways they might not understand for many years to come. They are also changing emotionally. The changes that occur affect the teachers that are charged with teaching these young students. A teacher must understand how the students are changing and the best practices for effectively teaching them. For students at this age, it is arguably more important to shape them mentally and socially rather than only intellectually. The key is to incorporate all aspects of development into a student’s education. In today’s changing society, it is arguably, more important than ever to provide students with an education that meets their needs (This We Believe: Keys to educating young adolescents,
