Michelangelo (1475-1564) was arguably the greatest artist during the Italian Renaissance period. His talents included sculpting, painting and architect, just to name a few. Michelangelo’s s most popular work was his Pieta and David sculptures and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings. Michelangelo, however, had no interest in school. But enjoyed sitting outside of the churches and other buildings watching painters. He also made friends with some of the painter’s apprentices. At thirteen, one of Michelangelo’s apprentice friends told Michelangelo he should apprentice under Domenico Ghirlandaio. In 1488 Michelangelo’s father noticed his son’s love for art, so he agreed for Michelangelo be taught under painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. A year later, the Medici family hired Michelangelo after seeing his artistic potential and he worked for them from 1489 to 1492. While Michelangelo worked for the Medici family, he learned to sculpt under sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. Michelangelo finished his first two sculptures while with the Medici family, Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna Seated on a Step. He was still in his teens when he finished these works!
