Michelangelo (1475-1564) was arguably the greatest artist during the Italian Renaissance period. His talents included sculpting, painting and architect, just to name a few. Michelangelo’s s most popular work was his Pieta and David sculptures and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings. His works have been carefully preserved over the years for future generations to see his amazing work. Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born on March 6, 1475, to Francesca and Leonardo di Buonarrota Simoni. Michelangelo was one of five boys. He was born in Caprese, Italy, however, after his birth they moved to Florence. Michelangelo, however, had no interest in school. But enjoyed sitting outside of the churches and other buildings watching painters. He also made friends with some of the painter’s apprentices. At thirteen, one of Michelangelo’s apprentice friends told Michelangelo he should apprentice under Domenico Ghirlandaio. In 1488 Michelangelo’s father noticed his son’s love for art, so he agreed for Michelangelo be taught under painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. A year later, the Medici family hired Michelangelo after seeing his artistic potential and he worked for them from 1489 to 1492. While Michelangelo worked for the Medici family, he learned to sculpt under sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni. Michelangelo finished his first two sculptures while with the Medici family, Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna Seated on a Step. He was still in his teens when he finished these works! After Lorenzo the magnificent died, Michelangelo moved to Bologna to finish studying and improving sculpture from 1494 to 1495. These statues would be used in Pope Julius II’s tomb. This project was called off, however, due to lack of funds for the pope and Michelangelo left unhappily. In 1508 Michelangelo was called by Pope Julius, to paint the twelve apostles, and other scenes from the Bible, on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. He, in fact, didn’t want to paint it, due to that he liked sculpting better. But, in four years he finished it, and was greatly famous for it. The figures were beautifully depicted, from expressions to muscles and veins. The only problem with it was that no one in the paintings had any clothing.
