While it is truth is that we cannot read mind of other people, neither we cannot see what is in their heads, but if we master art of non-verbal communication, we could read their emotions through the position and movement of body parts, changes of voice intonation, manner of breathing, and quality of touch. By my sort of introvert nature, I have always preferred to observe and analyze people’s behavior before I would speak or act, so I was looking forward to this field essay who asked to venture outside and observe people around you. Ultimately, I decided to drive to Miami Beach area, walk around, and witness non-verbal behavior of thousands of tourists in melting pot resort city. The coffee is my weakness, so I decided to start my journey …show more content…
As I walked along iconic Ocean Drive’s Art Deco hotels, I noticed a large group of young foreign visitors taking pictures next to clock tower, they posed for photographer all showing well known V for “victory” sign with their hands. While I was penciling in my observation to the notebook, alternative looking couple took their spot to take photos next to obviously popular Miami Beach landmark, similarly they flashed the sign with their hands, only this time it was infamous “horn” sign. Continuously, whenever we see people taking photos in happy moments; it is amazing opportunity to see emblems, the universal signs that we do with our bodies. However, when we travel abroad, we should be careful with the emblems because they are culturally specific, and there could be different meanings among variety of cultures. Next, I sat down on one the benches along Miami Beach oceanfront boardwalk, after good fifteen-twenty minutes of complete inactivity and meditation on unusual mild February sun, I caught loud and passionate argument on my right between two men in different soccer jersey from the city of Rome, I don’t speak Italian language, but they were speaking with lot of Illustrators to empathize verbal communication, I could see the tapping on side of the head followed by wide open hands; other man responded with chin flicks, and
Jeff Goodell's book introduces an inside look at rising sea levels and their effect on our world. Goodell's book describes a journey to different cities and towns to figure out how to conform to sea levels that are continuing to rise. He travels to places like small Alaskan villages, to the city of Lagos, and returns throughout the book to Miami. Miami is one of the areas that demonstrated the challenges of trying to keep the ocean at bay. According to Goodell, because of carbon dioxide emissions, sea level rising is guaranteed. People need to help the problem by lowering the emissions of these toxic gases.
Communication involves more than exchanging words between people. Gestures, postures, facial expressions and even eye contacts are important during communication. Both verbal and nonverbal cues are important during communication and can help a person understand the speaker or listener’s emotions, attitudes or status. Understanding the existence of various cultures is necessary since different cultures have varying ways of communication (Lustig & Koester, 2012). Therefore, a communication style that is perceived as bad by a culture may be good in another culture. Besides, characteristics that may be essential for a particular culture may be quite irrelevant for another. In line with this dissimilarity, individuals need to adapt carefully and understand communication preferences and desires among cultures.
Communication is the interaction between individuals that allows us to deliver and receive information, thoughts and feelings. Communication can be seen to have three components: verbal (spoken words), non-verbal (body language) and paralinguistic (tone and pitch of spoken words) (Mehrabian 1981). This shows the complexity of communication in that variance in one ‘component’ could potentially alter or distort the desired meaning being conveyed to the recipient. Similarly Arnold, Undermann Bogss (2015) states that communication could be seen to be a combination of verbal and non-verbal actions being used in unison to exchange and strengthen ideas or share life experiences through means of posture, spoken words or personal symbolism.
Communication is everywhere. We, as interactive human beings, spend the majority of our time corresponding with others to satisfy our physical, identity, social, and practical needs (Adler, Rodman, & Sevigny, 2011). Often, this is consciously done; we search our minds for the accurate linguistic means to express our experiences, and use them to communicate with those around us. However, communication is not as straightforward and effortless as we may believe. It is, in fact, often unintentional, with 65% of it occurring as a result of non-verbal cues (Matsumoto, Shibata, Seiji, Mori, & Shioe, 2010). As mentioned by Marta Dynel (2011) in a study done on nonverbal communication, “Non verbal signs and signals ... are prevalent practically in
Chapter 4 – Nonverbal Communication 1. What are the functions of nonverbal messages? ● Substitute ● complement verbal messages: adds to verbal message, improves clarity and understanding ● contradict: non verbal behavior not reflecting verbal message 2. Know the different codes (i.e., kinesics, haptics, proxemics, vocalics, chronemics, and self- presentation cues). Code 1 - Kinesics / Use of the body ● Gestures ○ Emblems - gestures with explicit meaning and dictionary definitions ○ Illustrator - gestures that accompany verbal message ○ Adaptors - Touching behaviors that reveal internal states such as anxiety ■ self adaptors ■ object adaptors - handling of objects ■ other adaptors - touching other people ● Eye contact / Oculesics ○ both people are looking directly into each others eyes ● Functions ○ regulates interaction ○ monitors interaction ○ signals cognitive activity ○ expresses involvement
By observing us children learn how to interact with others, accomplish goals, and get along in the world. We are the examples, and what many do not realize is that our non-verbal messages and actions are stronger than our verbal ones. Non-verbal communication consists of expressions, tone of voice, eye contact, and actions. The way you listen, look, move, and react tells the other person whether or not you care, if you’re being truthful, and how well you’re listening. When your nonverbal signals match up with the words you’re saying, they increase trust, clarity, and rapport. When they don’t, they generate tension, mistrust, and confusion. There are many different types of nonverbal communication. Together, the following nonverbal signals and cues communicate your interest and investment in others.
Few realize how loud their expressions really are. Be kind with what you wordlessly say.” A quote from a popularly known author, Richelle E. Goodrich. We speak not only from our words but from our expressions. Many time, these expressions are unknown and are just caught upon from our surroundings. Our brain takes in this information and we do not really know how these expressions developed. In our day to day verbal activities, we follow up with so many non-verbal ques like the sounds we make following our words, or the way we pronounce these words. The use of pitch and pace of our voice and words to make interesting conversations. The clothing we wear based on the social norms we follow or just based on our culture or traditions. The use of our distance to known and unknown people. The use of eye contact to express the level of intensifications, the actual emphasis of the emotion running in the brain at the time. The uses of pauses in our speech and the judging of the expressions on other peoples faces. Misjudging of emotions carried along with another emotion because of the lack of understanding of mixed emotions, to give which emotion the priority during that situation. This media analysis focuses on the nonverbal communication and its different aspects in the movie “Inside Out”. Inside out is a movie about a girl and the five major emotions that control her life based on daily situations she faces. This movie is enriched with nonverbal communication as the emotions are
land price and potential land for the new building. Obviously it can be seen along the city that the construction is still running everywhere for the development of new shopping mall, new condominium and apartment blocks even though they have been warned on the flooding impacts. Thus, from here also it has contributed the higher changes to the climate change and drowning the city faster.
Miami Beach’s first big boom came in the Roaring Twenties, when the general wealth of the country and the good destiny of the well-to-do in particular made a resort city providing to the rich and advantageous enterprise. The first boom came to an end with twin disasters: a huge hurricane in 1926 that triggered extensive destruction and the stock market crash in 1929 that unexpectedly escorted to a severe deterioration in the amount of money people had to spend on things like vacations. There were still enough rich people with enough money to stay in the luxury hotels in the city and keep homes there, although there was no longer the rolling demand for new construction that had marked the 1920s (mimoonthebeach.com, 2015)
I am one of those who suffer from butterflies, that uncomfortable feeling in my chest and stomach, before speaking in public. This is not only a problem for myself, but it is also a common fear and a concern for many people. My purpose is to denounce a few dynamics I feel have helped me to become a more effective speaker and to manage my butterflies. I will prove to you that strong body language makes ideas and feelings more clear, vigorous and engaging. First, I will show how eye contact unconsciously engages the audience. Second, I will prove that vocal emphasis is the key to a vigorous speech. Third, I will confirm that gestures reinforce the ideas of the speech, making the speech
People are commonly seen engrossed in their cell phones and tablets instead of participating in the world around them. This is important to note because it has become more prominent in this generation, as well as in younger children. The use of these devices has even filtered into peoples “relaxation time”. Even though there are a multitude of benefits that accompany cellular devices, there has been a negative correlation between cellular usage and the quality of life. For some people the consequence can be extreme; such as people experiencing altered experiences due to the considerable amount someone uses their cell phone. My two field studies took place in Miami Beach, Florida and Virginia Beach, Virginia. My observations were taken in extremely different conditions. In Miami I was observing people who seemed to be on vacation in upper 70 degree weather during the Spring Break season in Florida, while my second observation in Virginia Beach was taken on a windy, upper 50’s, day in April. My first field study brought about many intriguing questions, but because of the difference in weather conditions they did not pertain to my second observation. Instead I went into my second observation open minded, hoping to find shared behavior between the
Nowadays, America is so busy that with some many things to fix they forget about the basic concerns. Therefore, the poor in needs are left behind like the last topic to address by governments. I have been living in Miami for almost 20 years, and I never seen that many people living in the street like I see it today. When I first came to Miami in the years 2000, and I lived in the downtown areas they were just a few people living on the street one or two. Today, if I walk by downtown Miami, I see more than a hundred living on the street, complete families on the sidewalk sleeping. The increment of poor people is humongous, and I see not change or interest of government to care for that. On every day news, we see how our ex, and actual president
In every society nonverbal communication is one of the most powerful tools that a person can use to interpret the message that is being delivered. Even though verbal communication is fairly straightforward, nonverbal communication allows others to sense the true emotions of the person that is expressing them. For example even though a person may say that they are not irritated, their usage of voice may display otherwise. Nonverbal communication not only reveals hidden messages, but it also complements, substitutes, and exaggerates verbal communication.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by my social environment and felt compelled to analyze the underlying facets of human communication. As opposed to readily advancing my own opinions, my nature has always been to observe, listen, and try to find solutions on a case-by-case basis. This interest in analyzing social interaction has not only helped me to understand others but is has also been an innate gift that I believe has assisted me in persevering through some of the most difficult personal challenges I have faced.
