From 1846 through 1848, a war broke out between the US and Mexico, over the land that we now call Texas. Originally, the land was Mexican but due to America’s idea of “Manifest Destiny” America declared it their own. The two countries both thought they owned the land and an attack on April 25, 1846 led to an inevitable war started by the United States. The US was justified in going to War with Mexico because the two countries couldn’t agree on a border, Mexico attacked the US first and and America thought God was telling them to continue to expand their country, so they were trying to follow their religion. During this period, it was unclear what country owned Texas. America tried to peacefully negotiate with Mexico but they were surprisingly attacked by Mexico. This shows that America had no choice but to declare war against Mexico. In Document B, President Polk writes that, “Mexican troops, and, after a short affair, in which some sixteen Americans were killed and wounded.” In this document, President James Polk sends a request to Congress to start war. In document B, the President shares what America thought was the border of the country. In the document it says, “The Congress of Texas, by its act of December 19, 1836, had declared the Rio Del Norte to be the boundary of that republic...The country between that river and the Del Norte...is now included within one of our congressional districts.” In Document C, the author shows what Mexico thought was their border. It says, “-instruction to protect the border, meaning the territory located between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River”. Both documents convey the two countries inability to agree on a border and who owned the land. A war was unavoidable considering how long this had gone on
