Methods and Procedures Interviews were administered during November 2014, with ten randomly selected working men and women throughout the state of Mississippi. Interviewees were asked a certain set of questions dealing with golf etiquette, business golf as a sales tactic, and whether or not it is beneficial or just a game. Secondary research was conducted through electronic searches.
Findings
Golf etiquette is not the first thing that comes to mind when making a sale or taking on a new clientele. Companies have used it for years, however, to forge personal relationships with clients. Eurich (2014) also states that one of the biggest problems with business golf is when individuals in sales pass up the chance to network with potential clients by declining the invitation to play. Some let their personal golfing ability be the deciding factor of this opportunity, when in reality the level of play is not the focal point. Hill (2014) furthers this point by mentioning that if the opponent is not as good of a golfer as most, not to torment or make fun of him. Giving encouragement instead of offering lessons is the correct move in this situation in order to not make him or her feel inferior to the rest. Success in business golf is about respect, not the score.
How Golf and Business Correlate
Quinn & Thomas (2014) speak from personal experience as they address business golf when they say that the relation between business tactic and the game of golf is very strong although most people overlook it. Professional golfer, Cary Middlecoff, as cited by Quinn & Thomas (2014) expresses that many golfers cost themselves strokes by not playing to their strengths. If they do not pick the correct club for the particular shot, then it may ruin their game.
