Metaphysics is the study of ultimate reality. Confucius’ metaphysics would see people as thinking and would ask, what the metaphysical core of people was. As he observed people he saw they were not able to become virtuous people due to egoism and altruism’s unbalance. He thought that when people balanced passion, ambition, loyalty, and moral duty it would create harmony. He believed this could be done through the gentlemanly tao way, through education and training as a ritual. It would create a noble person, Junzi, start with the individual and then people influence society. Harmonized people, harmonized world. Confucius created five virtues to follow. The foundation being Ren, being considerate, you also did not have to be reminded either. The second being Li, propriety, self-control and good manners. Knowing and doing what is appropriate to the situation. The third Shu, reciprocity, do not do to …show more content…
He spent seven years in nature trying to understand it through nature and meditation and found it was ineffable. Lao- Tzu had five basic teachings known as the Tao Te Ching (way) and believed if you wanted virtue you had to understand and see it everywhere, the Tao. The other being Wuwei, effortlessness, letting things happen on their own. Another is having simplicity, which means getting rid complications. Another being gentleness, no need of weapons for war and violence. You won’t need them if you really want peace. The last being relativity, humans create divisions and preferences of their own that do not exist and that nature does not care about, live in the moment. Whereas Confucius had an order that needed to followed, Tao Te Chang did not. The ying yang is a good way that symbolizes this. There is always light and darkness, and there is light in darkness and dark in light. The circle represents its circular motion that it goes back and forth with each
Confucian philosophy is an ethical and philosophical thinking system thought to have been developed from the teachings of Kong Fuzi, known as Confucius who lived between 551–478 BC in China. [1]The essence of Confucianism is that the human mind can be cultivated through virtue and moral perfection. Confucianism has had tremendous influence on Chinese history and culture as well as other East Asian

Confucianism is a time enduring philosophy that has stood up to invading clans, war, resentment, enforcement and infringement of new philosophies, and eventually, revival. For almost 80 years, up until the late 1970’s, Confucianism and its ideas and values have been all but wiped away from China. Though effort was made to remove Confucianism for good from China by the Communist leader Mao Zedong in 1949, the ideas and values were so deeply embedded into peoples mind and the culture that even suppression could not keep it out of the culture and practices. The main factor that has brought Confucianism back into the limelight in China and other East Asian countries is the recent
One of the most influential people during classical China was Confucius and his belief system of Confucianism. There are many reasons why Confucianism rose among the other belief systems to become one of the superior and most widespread in classical China. First and most obviously, Confucianism made its success with the birth of Confucius in 551 BCE who is the author and creator of all the content in Confucianism. More seriously now, knowing the fact that Confucius and Confucianism was created during the Zhou dynasty the reasons for Confucianism at that time seemed mandatory. During the Zhou dynasty, the Chinese government was incredibly weak due to the numerous betrayals and the instability of the alliance system created by the Zhou leaders.
The I Ching, the Book of Change, the foundation of all Chinese religion and science, is an ancient Chinese divination text that provides influential text in religion, literature, and art. It provided guidance for moral decision making, based on Taoism and Confucianism. The I Ching can be read as a microcosm of the universe, explaining how to keep human behavior in unity with the alternating series of nature. Chinese tradition was divided into Confucianism, the exoteric, and Taoism, the esoteric, but both see the world and ‘God’ as a whole, the cosmos. Although different, both religions allowed their followers to find “God” in all things, Confucianism through the natural order, and Taoism through the Tao. Both of these religions encouraged knowledge beyond the physical world and beyond that which can be known with the senses.
The military classics of China represent a long and historical culture of the Chinese people. They represent the societal concerns and developments of China and within these texts are recurring tenets that occupied the philosophy of China. Five tenets will be analyzed to show the Confucian relationship across various military texts.
These relationships are upheld to create a mutual respect and trust between the people involved. The five Confucian virtues are Ren/Jen (Humanness), Shu (Reciprocity), Li (Propriety), Wen (Culture), and Xiao (Filial Piety). The virtues are used as a way instill social harmony. It is ultimately the goal to create a Junzi/ Chun tzu, or the “ideal personality”, which is referred to as the ideal human being. Taoism has the main teachings of Tao, wu wei (or effortlessness), simplicity, gentleness, and relativity. Tao, which is recognized in Confucianism as well, has many meanings and can be translated as “existence,” “pattern,” and “process.” Wu wei recommends that one must not seek unnecessary actions. Simplicity, as it sounds, urges to eliminate the artificial from our lives and to embrace what nature grants us; because of simplicity, they prefer not to seek out unnecessary higher education unlike Confucianism. Gentleness shows that a wise person does not seek violence. And finally, relativity teaches that one must not use a limited view point based on their own concerns. Thusly, Confucianism preaches the importance of upholding one’s relationships with others; meanwhile, Taoism advocates a harmonious, natural, and peaceful universe.
Confucianism focuses on rituals and the proper behavior of the culture. There is a belief that what you are is your place in society and one must be okay with that. One has to learn to be okay with their life or situations because nature will always run its course even with interruption. Confucius’ main goal was to explain proper character through observation, studying, and self-reflection. Which could be found in nature and the way nature works. Which relates to the quote “Those who know don’t talk. Those who talk don’t know” because those who know, learn through observing their surrounding. A human reaches potential when they are able to recognize their true self, what nature is, and how to follow their nature. To me knowing who they are
Confucianism developed from the period of Hundred Schools of thought. It was widely acknowledged throughout most of the great empires in ancient China and was even adopted as the official school in Han Dynasty. Even though social and political structures have changed dramatically since then, Confucianism still has great influence over East Asia. This paper focus on lasting legacies of Confucianism in five aspects, which are family model, proper order, government model, elite regulation and political economy. These legacies form fundamental social values of ancient China and they continue affecting people’s perceptions in East Asia.
Confucianism has easily been influential in the development of the Chinese state through history. In fact, the core ideals of Confucianism have evolved. Despite the harsh repression of Confucianism by Marxist revolutionaries during the second half of the twentieth century, Confucian values continues to be influential in Chinese society and recently, Confucian political philosophy has resurfaced again. In addition, the political ideas and social ethics of Confucianism can provide the basis for a new, functional form of government in China. Confucianism can be a viable political philosophy for China in the twenty first century because many intellectuals have turned to Confucianism to make sense of such social
When Western people think of Confucianism, they often think of it in a past sense- as something only relevant to ancient China that cannot be applied to modern day society. However, what these people fail to realize is that Confucianism’s roots have been so integrated into China’s society that the values have become a part of every day life. Without having to explicitly state that they are following specifics aspects of Confucianism, most Chinese people submit to them, often times unknowingly. However, Confucian values not only exist in the Chinese society, but also permeate into other areas of Chinese culture such as architecture and aspects of Feng-Shui.
Confucius was born in an impoverished family. Throughout his childhood he was very eager to learn so his mother fostered that. He had several small positions in government in his home state, Lu. He was the first ever teacher/educationalist in the history of China. His teachings found in the Analects, discusses ethical modules family, politics, economy, and more. In his teachings he promotes humanness (ren), ritual propriety (li), and the developing of exemplary persons (Junzi). (Li pg. 87)
Most ancient philosophical ideas developed in the ancient Chinese empires are believed to have their roots from Confucius. Confucianism was a simple way of life propagated by Confucius around the fifth and sixth century BC. Often perceived as a religion and other times as philosophy, it is conceivably best unspoken as a comprehensive humanism that neither slights nor denies heaven. The Chinese populaces have devotedly observed Confucianism for nearly two millennia. It has become an implicit part of their culture. However, there seem to be a cod division among its proponents holding contrasting perspectives and understanding with respect to it. The central focus of this presentation is to address the questions whether Confucianism is a religion or a philosophy or it encompasses both.
Lao Tzu believed that human life is constantly influenced by outer forces; not unlike everything else in the universe. He knew that simplicity was key to all truth and freedom. He always encouraged those who followed him to observe and to seek to understand the laws of nature.
